2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

This is weird.. How can she land quads and then struggle with 3Lz-3Lo? My unprofessional guess it's the timing that's bothering her. I think for 3Lz-3Lo you need to be really precise which might not work out if you're tired and not 100% focused. I don't think it has anything to do with injuries or puberty, it's just been a long long season for b to work on their senior debut.

Yes, I think that’s the focus too. Her 3Lz3Lo technique is extremely difficult : she rippons the 3Lz and barely stays on the ice before the 3Lo contrary to others who perform the combination and spend more time on the ice to prepare the 3Lo. I’d say (unprofessional guess too) hers doesn’t lose momentum and takes advantage of the speed of the first jump which is more risky. It’s impressive but I think difficult to perform if not focused enough : she must do almost 6 consecutive turns wothout break.

I agree with your unprofessional guess! (as a fellow unprofessional)

It almost seems like one continuous jump instead of a combination of 2 jumps.

If needed, can she do a 3Lz-3T instead in the LP (like the SP)?

Personally, I hope she still does the 3Lz-3Lo.
If she had done it in the SP, I think she would be in 1st place.
So those little fractions of points do matter!

Yes, that's what makes Sasha's 3Lz-3Lo so spectacular when she lands it. It's so quick, almost like one jump, like you said. But I guess that makes it harder too.

I do think it was better to not do it in the SP. She might have been first if she'd landed it but given that she struggled with it before, it was too risky. The FS is much more important and there it will come down to who is the cleanest. I do think she'll go for a 3Lz-3Lo there, though, since otherwise she would repeat 3T as a triple. (she also does it in combination with the 4T)

The problem is now she is taller and that quick technique will need to slow down a bit to adjust for her new height. I am confident she will be able to make the adjustments during the off-season.

The timing is extremely difficult for -Lo combos of any kind. The free leg needs to stay in front on the landing, unlike a -T combo, where you get a moment to stabilize the landing edge by bringing the free leg behind, just as you would for a solo jump. For a -Lo combo you essentially have to set up the loop as you’re landing the first jump.

Does anyone know if the Universiade counts for the Seasons Best List?? If it does, it was a very important result for Konstantinova. Her score 205.91 moves her up the list of Russian ladies. She was 11th Russian - now she moves ahead of Gubanova, Tarusina, Sakhanovich, Medvedeva and Shcherbakova and is now 6th best Russian. This could be important regarding the GP spots next year...

That's why I think Loop combos should be worth more in BV. To me it's insane that a 3Lz-3Lo is worth the same as if you do the jumps separately.

It does not count.

I do not know what is more surprising, that Trusova with her most horrible skating of the season was 4 points away from the FS world senior record; or that Shcherbakova with minimal errors was only 3 points away from her.

Am I alone to think that Anna S.'s jumps are getting better and better this season? They look so effortless with great lift into the air.

I think the idea is that by doing a combo you already get a huge point bonus because you get to squeeze in an extra triople jump while only using up one jumping pass. (?)

Does anybody know if there was a CBC commentary on Jr. Ladies Fs this year?

No, the CBC stream had no commentary. ISU seems not to have brought Ted Barton to Jr Worlds this year. I think the CBC is doing a delayed and abbreviated television broadcast of Jr Worlds that will probably have PJ Kwong, Kurt Browning, and/or Carol Lane commentary, but it won't be all skaters. I'm not totally sure they're doing it either, but you can check YouTube for videos with commentary later.

Exactly it is insane. Skaters should be rewarded for executing much more difficult jumps.

Unfortunately not the case with IJS. It seems the ISU can't make up their minds about whether they want the sport to technically progress, as sports should, or if they're in the business of maintaining the status quo. Devaluing the difficult elements, especially in pairs when several pairs teams already have ability to do quads, is them trying to level the playing field. Unfortunately for the powers that be, this strategy isn't working too well these days.

Sasha and Anna are leaving this competition with two medals each. And both have a gold and a silver. Only a small gold for Anna but still. What an accomplishment for both of them. And Sasha is a two time Junior Worlds champion now. Congrats! I wish we could have seen Alena here with them but we will see all three next year in seniors. :)

The interesting thing is, if Alena had been there she might've snuck in for silver or even gold, with the way her PCS has shot up the last few competitions.

We will never know what would have happened all we can do is hope she has a full recovery before next season.
