Yep. I mostly seen it between older people tbh, folks that are 50+ now.
For instance, a guy called Viktor (name) Aleksandrovich (patronym) is called Sanych (derivative from Aleksandrovich) by his buddies.
Another guy, lets say Ivan Anatol'evich is called Anatol'ich.
And so on.

This stuff is reserved for people of their own age, so a 30 years old hanging out with that group would be called by a diminutive of his 1st name.

i'm probably going way too far with the offtopic, but... what about using first names to create patronyms, and then create pet names from these patronyms (Anatoliy -> Tolyanich)
this is such a hilarious and complicated topic, i believe it's impossible to get it right unless you're russian, so it's better to avoid it when possible

Not sure, never seen it in practice.
But surely can be a strategy to confuse the foreigners even more...

And nah, names are not offtopic, after all we are talking about russian ladies and how to properly address them. Maybe we should just do it simple, "her majesty" + first name will totally do the job.

Eteri... There is no diminutive for it, i think:
1. It is not a Russian name, and is pretty uncommon, so there are no "common form" diminutive
2. It is short, kinda like Alina, so it makes sense that it would have no diminutives

Now, her close friends and family probably have some pet name for her, which we dont know.

Back in the USSR, it used to be a sports structure for the real armed forces. Today, CSKA only has it's name left.

My 2 cents. There are 2 kinds of diminutive names in Russian. The first one is arguably OK in the cases like GS discussion: Mikhail to Misha, Evgenia to Zhenya, etc. The second one is very questionable sometimes even rude because it's often the nicknames of pigs, cows, and goats in the Russian country. Its key attribute is using "k" suffix. For example, if we take Sotskova, Maria to Masha is fine with me. But "MashKa" sounds very rude. Alina is not a traditional name so that I cannot figure out a common diminutive, may be Lina. But AlinKa while better than MashKa still has this "K".

I read further and yes, "Alenka" may be an exception - it sounds nice and warm. We even have chocolate named Alenka - I cannot imagine chocolate called "Mashka".

As far as I know, the GP assignements will be published somewhere in late June.

I realized that we always say (or I do) "well they could go senior and do CS" and I'm not sure that's really true. See below:
There's three spots per country as far as I know.
Assuming that all 8/9 GP skaters want one CS, then there's 9/21 spots. Now let's give the rest two each so that they can have a chance to compete for the series title. That means that six skaters can get two assignments.
Here's who I think will get them:
1. Anastasia Gubanova (SB not high enough for GP)
2. Anna Tarusina (unlikely to get GPs but did very well this year)
3. Sofia Samodurova (might get the Rostelecom host spot if Daria is assigned 2 spots and Anna Pogorilaya isn't back yet but other than that, no)
4. Serafima Sakhanovich (did very well this year under Plushenko, don't know how she'll do under Turenko)
5. Elizaveta Nugumanova (URs will hold her back from getting onto the GP but she can do pretty well here)
6. Anastasia Gulyakova (good jumps, sometimes makes errors, got a JGP silver but no 2nd assignment)

Anyone else you think will get spots?
