I really like Alena's attitude. From interviews, she's made it very clear that she can't wait to compete in seniors. She's tough as nails and a very strong competitor.
Also, if a male athlete said anything like that, nobody would bat an eye, but call him a go-getter.

What I particularly enjoy is that Alena and Sasha remind me a bit about Zhenya and Alina. Alena‘s brilliant artistry, just like Zhenya and Sasha‘s equally terrific technique (first one to master quad jumps) and Alina‘s (first and only senior lady in the current field to jump 3Lz-3Lo). Also in their personalitiy. It‘s just so great to have an exciting rivalry/friendship both in seniors but also in juniors. Makes the competitions just so much more interesting.

It's so hilarious how one of the most hated persons on this forum(Medvedeva) is now the most beloved one and no one is allowed to criticize her for anything, and people find over9000 excuses for any controversial thing she does. About one year ago I was defending her on the forum, and now we swap the roles

Yes, I also noticed it. I find it ridiculous. I was among them who defended and liked her in the past and I like her right now. I believe most of the posters who support her so loudly now don't like her more but they are happy because she left Russia, and because she left Eteri. This is a mistake in the perfect machine. I have no other reason Evgenia's skating isn't changed too much since then. I laugh at that she will be perfect in every aspect of her skating, her body type will be genetic not the result of Orser's abusing.

And no, don‘t come to me with the „But Eteri said Medvedeva said about Alina...“ Unless we don‘t have proof, we can‘t take it seriously. With Ashley we had proof. But still, ultimately it doesn‘t even matter whether we have proof or not. In either case, both Med‘s and Ashley‘s, I don‘t hate on them because they said those things about Alina. I wouldn‘t hate on Ashley if she said them about Zhenya or any skater either. I would say that I don’t like this comment and it sounds rude (Zhenya’s comment about Alina was rude, too, btw, if she really said that. No need to deny that) BUT: Things like that can happen. Sometimes you do things wrongly, like Ashley did. What if? People need to understand that figure skaters are just regular human beings, they have emotions and worries, too. And yes, they say things which may be percieved wrongly. Hasn‘t that happened to any of you ever? Well, you must be perfect then, congrats. We should stop to put so much importance on a skater‘s words. We never know the backround story, in which context they were made. So, no, we don‘t say that „just because we‘re Zhenya‘s fans“. We say that because hating is unnecessary and destroys the mood here. Criticism is okay but no need to be spiteful. About anyone. I would be just as mad if people were saying such things about Alina or Tuktamysheva or Sotskova or anybody else.

Just because I registered in April doesn‘t mean I haven‘t been a figure skating fan, or a Zhenya fan or haven‘t read in these threads before. I actually followed goldenskate just to read some news for quite some time but didn‘t register up until April. So, yeah, I know that things like these have happened to Zhenya, people have been bashing on her like forever, like her senior debut even. And I don‘t care if there are „bash“ or „hate“ threads against her, I just don‘t read in them. But this is one of my favourite threads because of the Russian ladies so I do get angry if I see things like that spread on here. :dumb:

Do you say this by ignorance or do you really think that before Alina there was no female Russian figure skating? Go and find out the first queen of Russian women's skating Irina Slutskaya, as well as the first Russian Olympic champion Adeline Sotnikova jumped this cascade! Currently, some juniors are jumping.

Sorry, English‘s not my first language so this came across wrongly. I’m going to correct it. What I meant is that Alina‘s the first and only of the current senior ladies to jump this specific combo. Neither Slutskaya nor Sotnikova are competing anymore (well, Sotnikova‘s not officially retired, I believe, but we haven‘t really seen her since Sochi, so...) and I said „senior ladies“. I know juniors are jumping it. And obviously, I‘m aware of the fact that Russian figure skating hasn‘t started with Alina Zagitova.

Actually, I did some research on the subject... Homeschooling is legal in all Canada, so your information is wrong.

Even if a child is home schooled, it’s under strict regulations and testing. They are not allowed to run the streets and do whatever. The parents has to be in contact with the school on a regular basis and the child is also tested regularly. When the child is entering High School courses and preparing to go to University, most of them attend High School to get their Chemistry, Physics, Calculus and subject they need to go to University. As a former Administrator of a school system, these are the rules..

I always wondered how professional skaters or any athletes in general manage to go to school or just study for school besides their skating. I mean, they‘re up to 8 hours on the ice and probably really exhausted once they get home. How does one manage this? I get that most need additional tutoring but still, even with teachers specifically explaining it to you, after 8 hours of training it must be really difficult to properly conentrate.

There was a post on GS way back about how Russian girls are away ahead of Canadian girls in skating. Now I understand why. In Canada, by law, you have to attend school until the age of 16. Young figure skaters have to attend school and practice their figure skating before and after school is out. It seems that in Russia the skaters do not have to attend a structured school system and therefore can concentrate 100% on their skating. I stand to be corrected on this information.

I don't know about Russian schooling system, but I'm sure there are strict regulations of home schooling as well? And yes by law you have to attend school until 16 in Canada, but how that's upheld in practice.. it's a different story. I remember in grade 9 I skipped about 200 classes and went to an IB school and there were no problems haha. I can't speak for elite athletes, but some of my friends have missed a whole year of school, or multiple when you add them up, for a sport/ other activity and they are nowhere close to the level of these skaters

How about the ISU Four Continent Championships in Anaheim in February? (Or is the latter only for seniors and, if so, who will be seniors by that point?)

They’ll have to earn their way to JGPF. You get points for your placements during the JGP season and the top six skaters go to JGPF.

4CC doesn’t include skaters from Europe and is basically North America and Asian skaters. Europeans have their own event called the European Championship. Unfortunately both are only for seniors anyway.

After JGP and JGPF sone will be invited to Russian Nationals based on results of the season and then Russian Junior Nationals. After that is Junior World Championship.

Yeah, I think Liza is a fine performer and was going to grab a copy of this routine as evidence, myself. Of course, it's hard NOT to feel "O Fortuna," but she really rocks it. She is good with upbeat, intense, dramatic music. She would excel with something like "Hall of the Mountain King," but maybe not with "Nocturne." She is no Kostner or Medvedeva, but she is more than just a jumper. Her Instagram is also fun. I like traveling the world with her.

Rewatched the JWC's today and man were the Russian Ladies good. I missed Tarakanova though. Trusova has some beautiful jumps though it's too bad about her short program music. And Kostornoia has the most incredible performance and skating skills. Definitely not the kind of program where you ever want to look away. Gosh I can't wait to see their skating again next season especially now that Tarakanova's recovered from pneumonia.

I totally understand this, and I think it might be part of why Zhenya's fans can come across as rabid over criticisms about her. I know that at least for me, I get wound up in those YouTube comment threads, and then when I come here or to the FS sub-another site and see more criticisms, I get riled up, but so far, I have been pretty good about not jumping in and freaking out. I get into flame wars over her on YouTube, but I try real hard to be cool here and on another site. When I see Zhenya fans that seem a bit sensitive, I usually assume that they've just come from YouYube and are not in a good mood. :noshake:

Thanks! Super helpful. I'm confused on "you get points for your placements during the JGP season and the top six skaters go to JGPF." Top six skaters in Russia or Europe? Either way, you'd have to imagine that Alena, Anna, and Sasha are all pretty likely to make it, no?

And as for the SGPF in Vancouver, I imagine Alina is as much a lock as you get?

To be clear, once she starts competing, and she makes the same errors again, the criticism is coming. I just couldn't care less about this stuff.
