2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

permanently or just for Novogorsk camp?
It's not just for camp, I don't think? She was there well before the camp. IIRC there was confirmation that she actually moved there but I'm not sure who it was who confirmed it.

Both of them have extraordinary flexibility. I might even consider Alena more talented because her physics don't make any sense. And she jumps 2A with counter entry before she's 8 and a half. Note you barely ever see this even in seniors. I think Alena also jumps 2Lutz with counter entry which I've literally never seen anyone use as an entry to 3Lutz. edit: Excuse me, it's rocker turn entry to Lutz. Still, never seen.

I feel like the worst skating fan right now, but will someone explain the Shcherbakova hype to me? It's not lost on me that she's obviously a very talented skater, but I feel a little out of the loop when it comes to the fanaticism that she inspires.

I think most of the hyping is because of this and this and may be also this.

P.S. I'm not in this hype train.. yet..

I'm not on the hype train yet either. I haven't been immediately struck by Shcherbakova, so I guess I've mostly just been curious what those who are big fans of hers really love about her. I wasn't initially a big fan of Kostornaya's either and now she's obviously really grown on me. I know that there are a lot of people on these boards who a very impressed by Anna, so I guess I'm just hoping to see what they see.

So, maybe enthusiasm would have been a better word. I'm genuinely curious, but perhaps I shouldn't have asked.
How can this be explained? Take the music of Pyotr Tchaikovsky and the ever-green Broadway hits. Feel the difference? The most interesting thing they are written with the same seven notes - do re mi fa sol la si. Seven music notes and about 200 of their modifications. By the way, SP also has 7 elements.

I think Shcherbakova has a lot of natural musicality + it factor + quads.

But Kostornaia is my girl. Skating skills!!!

I would also add those 2:

I have been following Figure skating for 2 years now and I can say that Anna is the first one that has the potential to come to my "ideal" for a female skater.

I love the style of Pluschenko, Yagudin, Lambiel and Johnny Weir because they have shown the perfect combination of technical mastery, awesome skating skills (esp. Lambiels  ) and unique artistry. Also, they were ofc very competitive but I got the feeling that they enjoyed every moment and always showed a heavy presence on the ice. Nowadays Hanyu continues their legacy by adding more and more sophistication to the sport too.

So, I wanted to find a lady who comes close to that style and I struggled a lot. Mao Asada definitely wasn't that far but still there was something missing for me. There were always female skaters who jumped well and had no artistry or the opposite. There was also Yuna, she was talented but I could never connect with her performances.

Of course it's all subjective and this is only my personal perception but for me the artistry means connecting with the music on a spiritual level, not just doing the moves alongside the background noise but really showing that you understand/like what you are skating to. Also, very important - not to concentrate only onto the jumps and stalk them, whereas the rest is just bland. And that's why I don't enjoy many "mature/older" female skaters even today because although they are all smiley and into the role, the whole performance feels more like a workout. In addition, I always pay attention to execution of different body movements, extensions and overall control.

So, what I am trying to say is that when I first saw Anna's FS last year on YT her performance definitely touched me and I connected with it. She may be very tinny and her skating skills are still not perfectly developed but there's a natural grace to her that is hypnotic. Although her program was the typical ET-generic-style, Аnna managed to give this program life and character unlike anyone else from their group. There were no forced facial expressions, no forced smiles, just expressing her pure feelings. Then when the videos of her quad/quad-combos showed up I really got excited...that there's finally a chance for a lady to show great heavy technical content and skating like a feather at the same time. Because what Trusova did at JWC was amazing, 2 quads...2! But appart from that super workout on the ice there was nothing else that I remember about her.

Apart from the quads she doesn't impress me either. I don't feel anything watching her (but then, I still feel the same about Kostornaya...). Actually, that's not entirely true - I feel a little uncomfortable because she is so thin and fragile looking. Nothing wrong with being naturally thin, but there is a point where it becomes distracting and you wonder if she will be healthy by the time she makes it to seniors, especially knowing Eteri's training style. Other than that, I simply enjoy more extroverted skaters who put all their emotions on the ice, so they'll probably never be my cup of tea.
