2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

Osmond was trailing Medvedeva in 2016-17 and both Medvedeva and Zagitova in 2017-18. So she was #2 and then #3 which, of course, is a good achievement which should "garner greater respect" - for the 2 consecutive seasons she was among top 3 skaters in the world.

Her current ranking, though, is temporary - she became the first because of the specific methodology used. And she will surely lose it after the GP series.

Using head-2-head results is one way to derive a ranking for a specific pairing of skaters, based on numerous sets of paired results. For example, A won more H2H than B, B won more H2H than C, and A won more H2H than C, therefore the ranking is A #1, B #2, C #3.

But the specific methodology used by the ISU, even though you may not agree with it, takes into account the best set of results from a number of categories of competitions, weighted in favour of competitions with larger fields or in the case of GPF, a small but tough field. The more competitions a skater competes in, the more potential for a higher number of points. And why shouldn't that be the case, doing more competitions requires greater effort. This is not exclusive to the ISU. For example, tennis takes into account the number of competitions by adding up the points from all of them completed for a player. Consistency to get high placements and a decent number of competitions completed over three seasons (2 preceding and 1 current) is required for a high ranking. Overall, the rankings try to take into account the skater's position relative to the entire competitive field, not just to one or two other skaters.

And I am looking forward to these three facing off again in the upcoming Worlds (that is if they haven't retired by then, as some are hinting at, because of potential upcoming technical layouts that may or may not be executed with good quality in competition 1-2 years down the road). May the best on that day win!

Can I ask not to bring Canadian skaters to this thread? There's supposed to be a special thread for them. I'm sure it shouldn't be too hard to find other users who wouldn't mind talking about Canadian skaters.

Here we are again. Kaetlyn‘s a fan-favourite in the Russian thread as it seems. No, honestly, I‘d say Kaetlyn is obviously a very good skater given her results from last season and it doesn‘t matter whether she “just“ won Worlds because Alina faltered. If a skater falters, well, he/she falters. No excuses. No “but if she hadn‘t bombed she‘d have won“. That‘s too hypothetical, imo. Kaetlyn won Worlds 2018, she won deservedly but Alina will get another chance to prove herself and that‘s it. And it’s also quite logical that Kaetlyn is first in the World standing after last season with all her achievements. (OGM, OBM, GPF bronze, World title etc.) That will likely change next season since she skips the GP series and loses a lot of points but honestly, why does that matter anyway? Alina, Zhenya and Kaetlyn (with Carolina, Wakaba, Satoko and others hopefully/probably in the mix) will battle it out next season and we‘ll see who ends up victorious. Personally, I‘m excited. ;)

And as far as I‘m aware Kaetlyn was waving the CANADIAN flag at the Olympics and at Worlds, not the Russian. So, as much as I like her, let‘s keep her out of here. :)

Thanks Fluture for your acknowledgments!

In addition to Med's programs, I'm excited to see Tuktamysheva's new Caro Emerald/The Hot Sardines FS. I guess no one has snippets of it? I quickly skimmed through the latest posts on her FF and didn't find any snippets of the new program, although I did find a video of her nailing her 3Lz+3T! I guess we'll have to wait until September to see her programs as well?

her short program for next season is “Assassin’s Tango” by John Powell
Her free skate “You Don’t Love Me” by Caro Emerald and “Petite Fleur” by The Hot Sardines. but no videos of her programs so far, at least i haven't seen any

There may be times when mentioning skaters from other nationalities is relevant, however, we ask folks to please limit this and stay on topic in the respective threads. Thanks!

I would like to add to this discussion that one of the two Alina's seasons is junior, which means significantly less points for her. Considering that is her current position huge. Also, she was facing that non-russian skater :) four times, three times won over her (BTW even if she would won at worlds, she would be still second, probably).

An interview with TAT at the test skates

By the time I finished translated this, I've started hating her thoughtful and so syntactically complex speech.

My condolences - her speech is terrible to translate indeed :noshake:  Lot of praise of Trusova (she even went as far as claiming her 4Lz exit is best among all men) - she is absolutely delighted about her :) I think seeing her quads live put her in a shock - considering that it was TAT who said that Trusova's achievement at JWC can't be repeated in another 10 or 20 years  Also she praised even her skating skills.
Also lot of criticism of new ISU rules - she clams that they hampers FS progress. I like what she said about that: "ISU apparently going to switch everyone to simpler programs and judge only costumes, music, spins and triple jumps. You can teach this a thousand people in the world. But the things that can be done only by a handful of people should be evaluated very highly." :agree:

Also it's a pity it's just impossible to translate her phrase "малявки" accurately - since "little ones" can't convey all nuances here. TAT is TAT - as always stays true to herself :laugh2:

Very happy to see TAT calling it how it is. And doing so while saying something that's actually not to her direct benefit. So many of the older skaters such as Tuktamysheva etc. have really disappointed me with their "Oh age limit increase would be good" only thinking about themselves.

It also appears that Eteri's seeking some younger skaters. I'm really looking forward to seeing what'll come out of that.

*Instantly diffed and patched the translation*
By the way, any corrections and suggestions are welcome, especially from native speakers; they will make further translations better.

I hope in a couple of nights my subconsciousness will drop a more accurate, slightly disparaging word.

Pardon the fluff post, but I’m really enjoying Evgenia’s new Instagram love for ladybugs. 🐞 Are there similar insects in Russia?

Sometime within the 21st century (I can’t recall what’s year it was, haha), Ontario had a huge infestation/overpopulation of them.

Toronto - where Evgenia is training now - is located in the province of Ontario. I’m not pointing this out to be condescending, rather, because I didn’t know what a Russian oblast even was until last year. ;) Just helping those who don’t know much about Canadian geography.

Would "young whippersnappers" kinda work?

The word малявка is rather neglecting than insulting. I don't think anyone would say "whippersnapper" without the intention to insult someone.

Yeah, we call them божья коровка, which means "God's little cow". Don't ask me why...
