Interesting that there is no Kadyrova on the list. I was wondering if Eteri was planning on attempting to pull off a Kostornaya 2.0 with her but apparently not.

I'm betting that she'll put out of this one and will be replaced in one of the JGPs (likely the third one) and given a later one. Especially considering that she's competing next week.

I guess she was entered for these domestic competitions before Panova knew if she would get a JGP? Hopefully they pull her out. None of the other JGP girls seem to be going to any of these early comps.

Sinitsyna is, but of course she hasn't officially gotten a JGP and anything's possible (knowing RusFed ) but I'm betting if she gets that third JGP (instead of Kanysheva going back to back) that she'll withdraw from either next week's competition or Open Moscow.

I'm actually quite surprised that Kadyrova isn't going. Winning probably wouldn't get her a JGP but would build up her reputation since the field is so strong. And I'd like to see how she fares against the Usacheva-Valieva-Kromykh trio.

Usually not. I don't remember none but Alina and Elizaveta in 2017 (list of participants was huge in comparison to other years). I mean Russian ladies didn't take part in LT in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016.

I think it may be too early in the season. I noticed a lot of Russian skaters are keen to get on the later events, but the earlier events are much less attended by Russian skaters.

Well, that leaves 6 challenger events (no Asian Open, no Lombardia, no US Classic or Autumn Classic since they never go) and just three are before the grand prix. Alina can't do Finlandia since it conflicts with Japan Open (Finlandia is 4-7 October and Japan Open is 6 October).

The three before the GP:
Ondrej Nepela (19-22 September)
Nebelhorn (26-29 September)
Finlandia (4-7 October)

If all 9 of the GP ladies want a challenger, then all of these spots are taken.

The other three challengers are:
Alpen Trophy (Austria) on 11-18 November
Tallinn Trophy (Estonia) on 26 November - 2 December
Golden Spin of Zagreb (Croatia) on 5-8 December

This would leave nine spots for the following:
Anna Tarusina, Anastasia Gubanova, Anastasia Gulyakova, Serafima Sakhanovich, Anna Pogorilaya (still a question mark), Valeria Mikhailova, Elizaveta Nugumanova, Alisa Fedichkina, and Alena Leonova (just an approximate list). All of these ladies could get one spot, since there are nine of them. If Pogorilaya isn't ready to compete, I would think her spot would go to Samodurova since she only has one GP.

The critical thing is to get to ISU events, get their minimums, and get into the season and World rankings.

If they unexpectedly leap ahead as the season unfolds and do well at Nationals, they will need those and placements to enable other opportunities.

I think some of those early Challengers may simply be too close to the test skates. It gives the skater very little time in between - and really none to implement any suggestions that were made at the test skates.

Of course that does not explain why ladies not going to the test skates aren't going to Lombardia, for example.

Pretty sure Evgenia will do Autumn classic this year if it doesn’t conflict with test skates.
