2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

Well, we are already seeing it discourage skaters from attempting elements.
Anna's 4Lz was almost ready to go but there was so much pressure to win and get a second spot that they didn't put it in. Kostornaya and You Young haven't done their 3As. Who knows what Trusova will do?

Is this really the direction for a sport to go?
This is one of those cases where the English expression 'the proof of the pudding is in the eating' seems appropriate.

I think BillNeal has the idea/theory of the revised IJS exactly right.

And in theory skaters who are introducing new elements should at least get positive GOE for the good points in the execution of an element before the negatives are taken into account which should mitigate the risk.

But given the discussion on the new IJS thread, folks want to see a -5 for any bad exit, even after an otherwise good jump. ...and are seemingly angry at a skater only getting a -4 on a jump that he'd just introduced. What this will mean is that he is unlikely to introduce the harder quads he is training until next season.

And as you point out, in big federations early season events are critical in determining federation support and future international assignments.

There's no point risking a quad if it means you won't get out of your country. So, skaters for smaller feds may, ironically, become the ones pushing the tech.

Well... I think the Russian ladies will eventually risk. Like at the second JGP where really only a bronze is needed to make the final.

I've also said several times I'm not a big fan of musicals and that Carmen isn't my favorite opera, but personal preferences of one spectator are not anything that could be decesive anyhow. We say "100 men, 100 tastes", you can never satisfy all of them, but somehow many people argue just from the position I don't like this music therefore it is bad completely. At such conditions I could never watch most of the programs at all :)

Pal, why can not all fans be as reasonable as you?

I actually love the music from Carmen and still have a huge soft spot for V/M's Carmen and I enjoyed S/K's Carmen last year. My dislike of POTO has more to do with my dislike of Sarah Brightman's singing.

While I wish they would give Alina something different and original to do I can see why they are going this route. She is still only 16. She has time to mature as an artist. And maybe I will really like her Carmen. I don't know. POTO for me is a turn off the music or tune out the music level of dislike. It is my least favourite warhorse. However, other people love it. It is one of the most successful musicals of all time for a reason. Some of the music is lovely.

I think it's often a catch 22. Pick music you know the judges and crowds know and like and risk being in that "overused" category. Go outside the box and skate to something more avant garde and run the risk of having audience and judges hate it and derailing your career. I can see why some people choose the safer root. Not everyone feels the need to push the envelope.

I think so! Although Kolyada had that one beautiful quad lutz, watching him fall 99% of the time was awful. Especially when he has such a beautiful 3Lz.

I’m all for trying new elements, but make them consistent before they go in a program. Kinda like what Yuzuru does.

Yuzuru is a bad example as everyone else haha. He included his 4lz but did it with very heavy landing anf then got injuried on this element and could miss Olimpics.
I think +5/-5 is ok but more difficult elements like quads must cost more so even if you fall and get -5 but it is rotated you still get lot of point for your risk. The difference between good triple and rotated but bad executed quad has gone with new sysem

Came late to the party, but still I would like to express my opinion about Alena's free program.
I don't like the construction of it, I don't understand the rationale, the idea behind for using those pieces of music the way theyare used.
I think that the program lacks coherence, and most important that something special, the IT.
I don't like the transitions between the different pieces and the fact that they always use spins during that moments .It's not even about voiceovers and sounds, which if they have a purpose in the program and contribute to the overall concept, are welcomed.
I do consider Daniil an original, progressist choreographer and I expect more from him. So, yes, maybe some critiques may look harsh, but I think the constructive ones are the way to progress.

The cold shoulder trend is pretty popular, especially among the age group of Eteri's skaters. I like it on skating dresses, but not really in real life. I don't know the purpose of a sweater with huge cutouts

Me too! I actually love all these dresses so much, especially Sofia's, but I don't care for the actual tops with the open shoulders, I think they end up looking kind of wierd.

I hate all cold shoulder, off shoulder and one should tops in real life. For costumes it's fine. But I don't like the puffy shoulder of Alena's dress. It makes every lady instantly aged 20 years. I remember quite a few Japanese ladies had puffy shoulder dress.

how many quads Sasha will attempt at the next JGP? thats the main question now

I think they'll start with one and work their way up to three for the Nationals. As with Anna and Alena, there's no need to rush into things right at the first start.
