2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

I feel like Gubanova just waved bye-bye to JGP with that program. I do think she can pull it off with more time, energy and a better dress. Now my hopes are that she gets sent to a couple Challengers, and have a great showing at Russian Nationals. Maybe even grab that elusive third spot for Europeans and Worlds...

Ten years ago it would be unheard of but I think the senior field is a little ...er...um....less competitive so maybe. Always believe and never give up. In spite of the weird program she is clearly a very talented skater who could compete for top spots in any other country. Russia is like a meat grinder though. Domestic competitions are pretty intense to say the least

That‘s quite harsh but I can‘t deny there‘s some truth in it.

I mean, compared to this, it‘s like she’s a different person. Maybe it will grow on me, though.

Overall, i feel that there are some issues with choreo, which does not highlight her strengths, and her overall packaging also got worse.
Those things are not an "adjustment" thing, its more like she is the #3-4 for her current coach.

Trusova skating first tomorrow? I'm convinced they're trolling us at this point

or maybe they just want to sort it out quickly at least for the SP.

wait the JGP starts tomorrow? WTH i was just streaming Linz yesterday :eeking:

I know me too lol. And Linz dragged on forever because their stream was such crap. I hope they don't have that problem this week.

Last week the ladies short was Friday and free was Saturday. This week it is Thursday/Friday so we lose a day, and Monday was a holiday in the US so I am even more out of whack. :laugh2:

Trusova will kick off the short at approximately 6:00 PM Moscow time/11:00 AM EST tomorrow.

I rarely blame the choreographer but I think she executed the intended vision pretty well :slink: For better or for worse. Other than a little tired looking she wasn’t fumbling around. Just not skating to her strength which is passion and emotion and have to look again

I’ll wait patiently though. She’s a talented one and with some miles it might come along nicely (in spite of the choreography)my first reaction was a bit of a :noshake: Sort of like when you check the time on your phone and immediately forget what time it is because you weren’t paying attention.

Exactly, i've seen that kind of program already in the past, so pretty sure that was what they wanted to convey and well... it's not that great.

I've weird feelings about Gubanova, Radionova and Tsurskaya on that group.

I do not think the dress suits the music but I applaud Gubanova for stepping outside of the pretty/classical box and trying something different. It's a new program so it's a bit rough but overall I didn't mind it that much. A bit more mileage (and a new dress, cuz ew...) and I could see it being a solid program for her.

Valieva is very lovely. I love the music choice and there's a nice control to her skating already. I wish the choreo was a bit more subdued to match the music more. I just always feel as though there is too much movement in some of Danil's choreo (I'm assuming he did this as she's an ET skater). It wasn't terrible but I think an even quieter approach to the movement would have been spellbinding... Her axel technique is a bit Lipnitskaya-esque (kicks into the jump rather than stepping up into it) and though I love the ending position of her combo spin the way she pulled her leg up isn't that appealing.

Still, for 12 years old she's very impressive. I look forward to watching her grow.

Interesting musical choice for Usacheva. The saga of Eteri skaters using music that's too mature for them continues.

Saga? In which way? Just being curious because I mostly found the programs to be fitting to the skater‘s personality. Lipnitskaya - probably the greatest example, specifially asked for SL even though no one approved of it at first. It was her wish. Medvedeva - true about her 2017 FS. She stated later that she didn‘t like it initially but grew to appreciate it as it brought results. So maybe that one counts. Zagitova - nothing too mature about Black Swan and DQ, rather on the contrary, always belittled for her ”juniorish“ programs. Kostornaya - nothing too mature for her as far as I can see. Trusova - that Big Spender SP was weird but it was used more of a fun program and not in the context many want to see it as. Maybe that one could count. Shcherbakova - last year‘s programs fit her perfectly, same with the SP this season. Maybe she isn‘t yet ready to fully pull off the FS music even though I‘d want to give her time to grow into it. Nastya Tarakanova’s programs (when she was still with Eteri) captured her spirit brilliantly, nothing too mature about the choreography either. I don’t know Usacheva‘s music to be honest so I cannot say anything about that. But from the others?

Of course that‘s only how I see it. So I‘d be interested what kind of ”saga“ you see there. :)
