I'm always surprised to see some users in this thread when they obviously don't even like the russian girls at all.

Everybody on my feed hates Sasha's FS dress but i like it, at least more than the SP one. The Fifth Element is a crazy movie, very colorful and the outfits people wear in that movie really are something. So i'm not surprised her costume is just as crazy. I think it's cute.

The costume is growing on me. The problem I think is the pants are too 'busy', plain black would work better. Also she is so tiny, well, I think the look would be better for a taller girl.

Serafima slayed in St Petersburg today. I’m so proud to see her keep going and skating clean programs. Her combos can be a bit much to watch but her single jumps are really coming along. They’re fast, high, and landed with zest.

She's the most exciting of all the junior girls for me, hands down!

Same. My God that 3F. A blur. Except I get extra nervous watching her, because she takes such risks. (And one competition in particular she had a horrible fall on the 4T)

Do you really think Russia needs to take extra steps to recruit more female skaters? For what? They should focus on recruiting more male talent.

Of course, but high level male athletes would probably want their boys to follow in their footsteps while that is much less true for girls... a hockey player or a judoka would probably pressure their sons more to take up hockey and judo than their daughters.

She did really well indeed, do we know scores from that event? Who finished first?

I think it was the first time i see her doing a 3-2t-2lo combination and it looks better than with the two toes. 3S-3T in the second half looked good.

Nice improvements on the artistry, she created some moment, both the SP and FP are nice. I'd like to see a little more transitions once she gets more confidence with the jumps, and i'd also like to see her selling a little more the choreo sequence at the end, she looked a little controlled (which is totally fine considering we're still in September)

Zagitova's father was a undersized minor league hockey player and Trusova's father is a "master of sports" in judo and sambo which are sports with weight classes. If I was the Russian fed(or any fed) I would start targeted marketing of figure skating towards good male athletes under 5'10(especially thin ones in sports where power matters) and tell them their daughters might have a better shot than average of having success in figure skating.

Genetics are tricky. I am 5'10 but my 5 year old son is 4'2 already - way above average. Hence, father's stature is not a reliable predictor (well, my wife is 6'1)

The one time Eteri did not go to the competition with her was at Trophée de France 2015 (November 13 – 15). when she herself asked that through RusFed. by that time Yulia had already prepared to leave the group right after that. On 18 November 2015, it was officially announced.

I need to go back and re-read all the interviews and press conferences (they are hard to find since some of those are only in russian) but i remember she said something about Eteri not caring about her enough in the last months, so she had to change.

you're mixing up fans' theories/speculations and real facts/interviews.

In figure skating athletic girls taller than 5'8 usually have more challenges than those around 5 feet. There was a theory to look at fathers below 5'10. I think this is a weak predictor.

Your situation is extremely, extremely atypical and I'm kind of baffled why you think you can extrapolate anything from it. Your wife is taller than 99.865 percent of other women in Russia. The son of an average height man and a woman 3 inches taller than the average man is very likely to be tall. Height is extremely(60-80%) heritable.

BTW, a man's height is on average a good proxy for the wife's height since women typically want taller men. Women above average in height are more likely to filter out men below average in height. Sure there are a few examples(like yours) where it isn't true but one example doesn't matter. What matters is the average of the population.

I suspect we are going to see more and more unitards and fewer dresses. Especially as the focus becomes less 'ice princess' and more mainstream athlete. You could also argue that these costumes are more aerodynamic, probably more comfortable to skate in, etc.

Unitards are also closer to what they train in.

Unless a club or training site still has a rule requiring dresses, most female skates train in leggings, compression tights, or stretch pants. (I do understand that there are a few places where dresses are still required....)

So, switching to a dress for competition is a fairly significant change in aerodynamics and how the body feels.
