2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

Ok , so really , as Sam mentioned above , can something happen from admins so that this thing about Evgenia and Alina stop? Seriously, this whole theory that Alina and Med will not stand a chance after this season cuz eteris quad girls is insane!!! Sport is not only about who wins , it is about to enjoy skating of these girls and discuss with each other for each of them as unique personalities on the ice , not just the girl who will beat Evgenia and Alina .
PLEASEEEE
Pages over pages over pages and we cannot read the forum anymore and enjoy discussion.

Anyway, I definitely think it's possible that when Trusova, Kostornaia, and Shcherbakova (typing these names all out at once is tiring!! lol) all move up, assuming all are healthy and capable of what they are now, Evgenia might not make the 2020 Worlds team (which would actually devastate me because that will be the first international skating competition I EVER go to see live!!!). But in 2021 and 2022? Anything could happen, and if Evgenia stays consistent, healthy and achieves Carolina-level PCS (which are always there despite how many technical mistakes she makes) and gradually increases her tech, anything is possible. (It's possible that Trusova will have 5 quads in Beijing 2022. It's possible she won't even be there. Who knows?)

Anyway, you keep criticizing Evgenia and Orser's strategy - but I'm genuinely curious as to what you think that she should do instead? She's recovering from injury, which puts limits on what they can do without too much risk. I think as long as she stays consistent this season and makes the GPF and Worlds podiums, she's in a favorable enough position - and a far better position than any other Russian lady will be after the age of 18. (Plus, I think the 4S could be a possibility for next season.)

I do not critisize their strategy as I do not know if it exists outside some general guidelines. What seems to me like a wrong direction are particular things that Orser said. First, is that they will work on her basics. If he meant something other than lutz edge, I think, it is not a priority. Her basics allowed her to get top pcs with very little room for any further growth. Then why bother other than a childish argument that her skating was juniorish? Beefing up jump content - that's the priority. Second thing was his phrase that we don't need to win all the competitions. I think that in Zhenya's situation: 2 losses after a long winning streak this might make a wrong mindset: "I fall - no problems: everybody falls. I did not win this time - no problem, I win next time". I think she should focus on winning every competition, she enters. Then her famous consistency rules. But what if this consistency was based on her daily multiple runthroughs and this does not go well with Brian's philosophy?

All in all I think that to remain relevant she has to practice a lot. She has to show that she is the boss. She has to win all the competitions she will participate

:agree: also, it is better for Evgenia to stay healthy this season, then to risk a career ending injury.

Here’s the thing with the quad arms race, the skaters may become less predictable. As each girl tries to outdo one another, Rusfed may want their third skater to be a steady skater known for consistency and a reputation for PCS.

Think about it. You may have three girls who can land quads but can all three do that consistently under pressure? Maybe even 4 or 5 girls are technically exceptional by 2022. But if they are all trying to out do one another and push the limits to get an Olympic spot or beat out the competition they may not skate with consistency needed to gain Rusfed’s trust.

So even though I don’t see Zhenya being able to gain much greater technical content, if she can remain consistent, with high PCS, and higher scores than anyone outside of Russia then there may still be a place for her. Rusfed would likely want their two top technical stars but wouldn’t mind having a Kostner type skater in place of a less reliable and inexperienced quadster. Especially given that Zhenya has Olympic experience already that may give her an edge over a youngster with less reliability.

If Leonova still hasn't been forced into retirement, I don't think anyone needs to worry about Evgenia.

The way I see it Evgenia may not even contend for top 3 this season. Her team seems to be under the wrong impression that she got all the PCS because she is a brilliant skater. Truth is Evgenia has always been more package than essence. Without extra busy choreography she looks like a mediocre skater with mediocre jumps and mediocre skating skills. I don't see how this new Evgenia is getting that kind of PCS.
Tsurskaya and Tuk look very strong this season. Sotskova is consistent. All three currently have potential to beat Evgenia. Zagitova is having a slower start and some growth issue, but she is packaged the same from last season, no big changes, no big risk.

After new juniors (Kpstornaia, Sherbakova, Kanysheva) Evgenia's SS looks mediocre.
Even without quads and axels they are better both in PCS and tecnically, no way they will get less than her for their performances on senior level.
And juniors can grab PCS reputation really fast. Alina proved it last year.
As for RN this year she will participate and she need to be perfect. Doesn't matter what TAT says. And acclimatization and a long flight will be difficulties in this.
I am cheearing for Trusova getting the gold medal. Maybe Sherbakova or Kostornaia could grab bronze/silver as it was last year.
I won't predict senior field before competions

Last time Leonova went to Euros was in 13-14. Did she get any GPs this season?
Anyways, being russia's #10, struggling to get GPs and never making any major international competition is not the goal Zhenya stated. If that was her goal, we wouldnt worry really, because it is easy for her to achieve.

Just a correction, Sotskova consistently URs.
On the other hand, i would say Zagi is fine and growth is not her issue. I would say it is mostly nerves, pressure from her team, hostility from some folks like TAT, all the offseason media BS (which likely still reached her even if she tried to avoid).

I suspect neither may be top 3 in the world this year. I wouldn't count out Polina to make some noise this year, even though she fell on the second combo, her jumps are huge. I think this may be a weaker year for the Russian seniors, but it isn't really an important year. More of a reset year. I speculate that this might be the year that there are more Japanese girls at the top in seniors (Rika, Wakaba). Next year Elena (Alyona?) K moves up, and I would speculate she will be the number 1 for Russia. In two years you have a whole new landscape in which I suspect will be total domination by Russian girls.

i hope Tarakanova do well! i think RusFed put Vasilieva as place holder because she is better than Tarakanova in Jr Nats and test skates, but if Tarakanova scored higher than Tarusina 186 with silver medal then Tarusina won't get 2nd assignment unless Vasilieva got bronze, or silver with lower score than 186.

Why is everyone ignoring Dasha, the only lady who skated clean in the test skate FS, again?

I’m not sure what it is honestly. I enjoy her skating and I really like her programs much more than last season. I guess she just doesn’t wow people or make as strong an impression as some of the other skaters. I can’t explain it but I’m also not surprised by it. She’s just kinda low key good and even in the middle of a high profile coach change she has avoided any real drama. :scratch2:

Soooooo what should Evgenia do? Her goal is going to be very, very difficult because of the depth in Russia. According to some of you, it sounds like she should either change countries or retire.

She’s making an effort to stay relevant long term in a sport she loves and yes, the odds are against her. I respect the heck out of her for trying, and I’m sure she will give us some gorgeous performances along the way. And I’m not going to count her out, because anything is possible. We just have to wait and see and take it one step at a time.

Have to ask a question. Assuming Kostornaia, Shcherbakova, Trusova all stay with Eteri, keep their jumps into seniors and have no issues with puberty, given what happened last season with Kostantinova (seems people weren't happy with her going to worlds), would the RusFed actually allow an all-Eteri team at worlds etc? Genuinely curious here.

If RusFed does not, then Med's main issue and competition in the next seasons isn't even team Eteri ladies-it's the rest of the field, no?
