2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

Going back to Alina, she seems the kind of girl who would try and become a back to back Olympic champion. She's going to be only 19 in 2022, after all.

Am I right in assuming that Sinitsina and Vasilieva won’t be getting a second assignment?

This week it’s who? Trusova and Tarusina?

Correct, no second events for them.
Good to see RusFed getting a little smarter and giving silver medalists second spots though. Although I guess there's less of a mess than there was last year...

Do we know what Alina's goals are? Does she have any long-term goals? Since she has already won OGM, I would not be surprised if she would be content to compete (and win) until she is no longer in the Russian top 3, and then retire, or to win Worlds this year and retire before she is no longer on top. If the World title is her primary goal, it makes sense to go full steam ahead this whole season to dominate and win.

(I admit that it is hard to imagine Alina staying with Eteri and continuing to compete after this season, since she will be vying with 2-3 other seniors on Eteri's team.

I think it depends. I don't think she is done growing and finished with puberty but she has made it over the first hump. I think she wants to sweep this season and win worlds. I think she could make it to another Olympics if she stays injury free and can keep up with Eteri style training.

Based on her comments right now about how skating is her life and she loves competing, I would guess her current mindset is to try to go the whole quad and try for another Olympics. It may be that a few years down the line she sees the writing on the wall in terms of younger girls. Of course that may change with unpredictable growth, injuries, etc. but she sounds quite motivated right now. I think her situation/motivation is helped by the fact that she did not get as much post-OGM media/sponsorship insanity as the average ladies OGM might get. In part this is because of the whole Med vs. Zag controversy in Russia, in part because Alina seems to have a more reserved and private personality, so she may not have received or accepted every media opportunity offered to her. If that's the case, it's probably a smart move for her well-being.

Maybe she is just like Evgenia, to be the best version of herself is the goal. I do hope she gets a world title.
Next year three more Eteri's girls are senior eligible, but I think Anna may need to stay in Junior for another year. Anna without a quad, and Alena without a 3A wouldn't have much advantage over Alina, especially Anna, who may have more under-rotations once she turns senior. And all the juniors will have their growth spirt to deal with, and that may well the be the Olympic year.

So Alina may be around for a longer time than we think.

Again, I don't see RusFed holding Anna back if she keeps going at the rate she is. It makes no sense to do so--next year's juniors will be strong enough without her help and it's hard to see her dropping out of the top 24 SB (she's currently 5th on the list).

I’m very curious as to how this plays out. I agree from Anna’s perspective it isn’t ideal but from the RusFed perspective... I’m not so confident. I can wait patiently though.... I was so certain after Sima’s second JWC silver and very dominating season she was good to go. We shall see... :coffee:

I hope that sb Anna increases in the season. And she may have one or even two clean quads. It will, I think.

This may be true.

And since we have old idiomatic expressions on the mind (had I a coin for every time my mother used the 'baby out with the bathwater' one....)

I'm going to say that my view on the Juniors chewing through the Senior ranks is in line with an old British one

'The proof of the pudding is in the eating'

We will see if the fast rotations are enough to take podiums as seniors where speed, more mature (less princessy) themes are needed.

The current crop will need to evolve to do different kinds of programs as seniors. Yes, Yulia, Evgenia and Alina did this, but I am less confident about the expression of some of those coming up.

I think everyone will agree that Trusova ain't no ice princess. And her jumps rely on height more even though she rotates fast. I'm sure Shcherbakova could skate to any music/program, her musicality is unmatched. As for Kostornaia, her skating skills and "maturity" are already on par with most seniors. Yes, we can't predict the future, but comparing them to the previous crop of juniors who turned seniors, I'd say they're set up for even more success.

Based on current state of things, I actually see rusfed keeping Kostornaia in juniors if she starts struggling
But overall, they can easily drop all the non top seniors too.

I've been thinking that with Elizabet TurSynbaeva and Alina, Eteri has two competitive senior ladies training.

And with Zhenya training at TCC, Eteri may feel the gauntlet has been thrown down in terms of helping Alina to future senior titles.

That is to say, the time is now to expand her program to look longer horizons for her seniors.

I really hope Eteri will commit to Alina's competitive future. I'm not comfortable with folks stating speculation already that Alina will soon need to move on to another training site.

Yes, neither Trusova or Tarakanova are princessy at all. LOL.

Super musicality aside, I'm less convinced Shcherbakova won't take a couple of seasons to get there.

As we've seen with Tarakanova's short program at from her new school, getting a more mature program across requires some stretching and growth.

Alina and Zhenya seem to have made the step quickly, given detailed coaching support, but I get the feeling that they both have innately creative instincts themselves. As did Yulia.

The Juniors are fierce competitors, but this is a different quality that I'm not sure we've seen explored or tested as yet.
