2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

Oh a pcs discussion again :D

In my opinion pcs got disproportinately inflated the last years.

I'm generally more of a fan of the russian ladies but after Grenoble I expected a rise of the PCS for the japanese favorites: Zhenya struggled and did not even try to perform anything and still got a significant PCS advantage over Rika, Marin and Mai. Idk anyone that seriously thought this difference is fair. Something just had to change.

Rika on the same level with a slightly nervous Alina seems fair - but 9's are a bit to close to perfection when both have a lot to improve on. My 2 cents.

1x Gold
2x Silver
2x Bronze
for the russian ladies in the GPF how amazing is this whoooooo!!!

Poor Tina is going to start barking at Sasha when she comes home with an unfamiliar silver medal on making her virtually unrecognizable :laugh2:

I am really curious about Sofia's jumps. They look small but she does not seem to have much under rotation problems based on the judging, and she does not seem to rotate super fast either. I was predicting she would lose her jumps in the coming seasons last year but I was wrong.

I do think her "artistry" is quite limited to the sassy type similar to Liza. They both use quite a lot of facial expression and arm/hand movement. I wonder who is their artistic coach.

Ok, folks.
A japanese lady winning one competition does not mean "japanese ladies supremacy".
Same as "Alina not winning" does not mean she is done. She is still one of the best skaters in the world.

The fact that Trusova and Shcherbakova had a bad day also means nothing. Today they messed up, tomorrow they will slay.

You people say "Kihira" like she is unbeatable like Zhenya or Alina were last year. Rika bombed in France, for example, and with a score like that she wouldn't even medal here. She is not a leage of her own, and she is not unbeatable.

It is really ridiculous how you people are eager to bury everybody after one bad competition, or after not winning a competition. When Zagitova doesn't make GPF, when Trusova and Shcherbakova bomb an entire season, then maybe. But now, LOL. Lets celebrate the achievements.

please, no one said alina is done. but she is no longer the untouched number one with a big tes and pcs lead. and yes it is quite a shift because in the repution scoring world that means almost certaintly lower goe and pcs for the future, regarless how brilliant she might skate. I would therfore argue her second place means quite a lot. IMO it is ok to point that out in an analytic thread.

I'm sad that Nastya T. got such a low score. I thought that in the FS she had the second best performance after Alena Kostornaya, heartfelt and driven.

I hope that what she takes from this is that she has a shot at the JW spot with two clean programmes.

Also, her FS dress was gorgeous.

well the thing is, with all due respect, is that if Zagi deserves 72 PCS then Rika deserves 75 and Kosto & Satoko would deserve a perfect 80 lol

(and for the record I think Zagi is more of a 67/68 PCS skater and Rika a sub 70 PCS skater)

point is is that you can't start crying about overscoring now that it's finally a nonrussian skater receiving the candy ;)

Relax, no one is crying. My point was and is about the need to have "ultra-C" elements which are quads and multiple 3As to win big competitions may be this but surely next season. If there are just 2 skaters like that (Trusova, Kihira) and the chance for both of them to skate with not more than 1 big mistake 70%, the probability that another skater wins is only 10%. If we add the third skater - like Scherbakova gets consistent or Kostornaya replicates Kihira's layout - this chance will be close to nothing.

WC and JWC will be very important events this year. They will influence the direction of ladies figure skating development in the years to come. In particular, if we see a lot of successful 3A and quad attempts some skaters that skip this season may continue to skip. Or come back just for fun. Or start to try new jumps....

....By the way, thank you Elucidus for my 6666 thumbs up :)

Lol how do you think us Satoko fans feel. Anyway Carolina Kostner still got good PCS and GOE last season even when she was surpassed by Alina. Remember her short program during Worlds this year? I would argue that their reputation is of an equivalent status now so there’s not much to worry about.

The difference: kostner deserves her pcs and didn't get them because of her tes supremacy and number one status but for her legend status and actual deserving. Satoko however deserves better pcs, but imo no goe for her jumps at all. So in the end her score is just fine.

alina just needs time to adjust, she grew a lot it is very visible now

Alina did a great job considering she was injured. She may not win guaranteed all the competitions she attends, but that its to be expected--that was never actually the case all the competitions the won from the Olympics to last years GPF she was never the clear favorite. I don't believe she will be dominant, but I do believe she will be a medal contender for years to come. (Rika will beat Alina if she is clean. I still think on average Alina will be cleaner than Rika, simply because no lady has really landed a 3A consistently before, and Rika does not do so consistently in practice yet. Maybe ~60% hit rate)

Kostornaia was great this week. The judges are clearly trying to value clean performances and if in seniors her PCS would probably be on the same level as Zagitova. Her skating is absolutely beautiful. The main problem with Kostornaia is that I don't think she is actually that consistent with her jumps, so she needs to work on that. Of course Trusova, Scherbakova, they need to get their hit rate up for the quad, but will be major players in the senior ranks as well. I actually don't mind Tuk retiring on a good note this year, if she so desires--I think results wise that would be the best for her. Despite her amazing performance today, she is clearly not the judges favorite.

Rika's practice 3A hit rate is higher than 60% once she's warmed up, 60% is closer to her competition hit rate (I mean, she's basically hit 2/3 in every competition this season, hasn't she?)

Kostornaia's jump consistency is not an issue at all, she has very high jump consistency. Sure she may miss a jump every once in a while, but that's called being human. Maybe it'll become an issue as she goes through puberty, but watching her practice she actually has a bit of a delay in rotation so if she can figure out how to get into rotation earlier she should be able to keep her triples even if puberty makes her rotation speed slower, imo.

Sasha's quad hit rate is fine, it's basically comparable to a reasonably consistent man's (though 'reasonably consistent' for men is...not very consistent). But the point is it's high enough that I don't think there's an issue with putting them in competition. Yeah, she may sometimes lose when things don't go right, but that's an expected outcome of a high risk-high reward strategy and it'll also be true of Rika and any of the top men. Which is why anyone predicting Alina's demise from this defeat is silly, she still has a good shot of winning over Rika at any given competition (at least, as long as she can regain some of the consistency she had for most of last season).

It does mean that Alina's fate is no longer entirely in her own hands, however, since she has to rely on Rika to make mistakes.

Anna's quads on the other hand...her hit rate at practice was quite bad. I think it would be smart to shelve it and focus on being clean with triples until she can get them more often.

Kostornaia is a fair winner, she skated like never before, but I know that deep down she knows that she won only because her 2 rivals fell, she esaid it at the end of the SP. It is undeniable that she is today the skater with the best interpretation of the all circuit (junior and ladies), although we all know that in front of Kihira her PCS will be very inferior without a 3A.

Without 3A and without Shcherbakova and Trusova jumping quads, the future of the Russian ladies is uncertain, since without waiting for Kihira to fall they will have to get used to second place.

After many years Japan has regained supremacy in ladies seniors, and if the russian decision to no jump quads does prevail, this supremacy will be extended for many, many more years.

Lol!

Rika won one event. Nice. But let's see her have one season like Medvedeva and Zagitova have had before we talk about Japanese supremacy in ladies figure skating. Thanks in advance.

I hope Alinas injury is minor.

Alena was amazing. Alena K too for that matter.

We don't know how would Zagitova skate with both legs intact. She could do better or much better.
And Kihira could be placed in the position "3A required to win".

A bit of positivity for our weekend! :hap10:

Golden Spin
1. Anastasia Gubanova scored very well and got the silver medal! She landed her 3Lz-3Lo in the free as well.
2. Anastasia Gulyakova didn't have her best competition but she improved a lot from Warsaw Cup! And her 3F-3T is just gorgeous.

Senior Grand Prix Final
1. Alina had a great performance! By any standards, she was wonderful, and even more so to consider that she was injured! I hope she can rest up for Russian Nationals now.
2. Liza had a great skate as well, with her only error being on the 3A. She got all level 4 spins too! She's had quite the comeback season this year and is well set up to medal at Worlds.
3. Sofia improved on her PB by 6 points, to put her at 204.33. She had a wonderful FS and was so engaging, charming, and captivating! She is setting herself up well to be Russian #3 and on the worlds team.

Junior Grand Prix Final
1. Alena Kostornaya had the skate of her life and absolutely deserved her win! Her skate was magical and I hope this can be a confidence booster for her to close out her 2018 at Russian Nationals
2. Sasha didn't have her best day but still managed to land her 4T after a hard fall! Placing second here will be a huge motivation for her to train extra hard for senior nationals
3. Alena Kanysheva was the dark horse going into the JGPF and had her best skates this season to win bronze! Unfortunately she won't be at senior nationals, but she's making a name for herself in juniors and now has a good shot at the JWC team.
4. Anastasia had a redemption free skate and scored a SB in the free as well! Moving all combos into the second half worked for her as well, and she proved that she's a contender to be taken seriously.
5. Anna obviously didn't have her best competition here, but I'm sure she's hungry now, and motivated to land all her quads at senior nationals. She too had a redemption free skate, despite missing both quads, and this was a valuable learning experience for her.
