2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

but the comments are cringeworthy.

Actually, it is somewhat hilarious. Only 1 in 5 promising juniors wins medals at major comps (including GPs) as senior. And only half of those win medals when 18 or older.
But of course, Eteri is the evil one.

Eteri Georgievna has survived poverty, a terrorist attack, a career ending injury, single motherhood and all that comes with it.

She has gone from an ice dancer no one heard of to a coach of some of the top skaters in the world. Her top skaters were also skaters no one had heard of before they became her students.
She singlehandedly made Sambo-70 rival, and I would say at this point, overtake, Russia's official army school CSKA.

Nothing can keep Eteri down. Eteri is living proof that as long as you are determined, neither injury nor puberty nor growing 22 centimeters in three months can stop you from being the hottest topic in ladies figure skating. :)
A few angry tweets from anonymous anti-fans probably don't even make it onto the list of the Top 1000 biggest problems she has faced in her life.

Figure skating is rife with jealousy and envy, always has been, always will be. Her top four are a giant level above everyone except the Japanese girls, and that creates jealousy. For the most part, I believe Eteri does the best with what she has been given to work with. Skaters burn out, have puberty related issues and so on, but the Eteri way seems to bring about the best conditioned athletes who work at their personal top level. My personal view is that more of a taper might be better, that her way might create an early burn out-but for all I know, her skaters do taper from time to time, and it isn't an intense daily grind. I look forward to Barton's interview!

Well I do wonder...where do the girls Eteri gets come from? Is there a strict filter before they can even join her camp?

Yulia, Evgenia, and Alina have raised the bar :) but once upon a time, it wasn't hard to get into Eteri's group.

Polina Shelepen became Eteri's student at age four. Eteri was her first coach. Yulia joined around age 10 and Evgenia around age 8, if I am remembering correctly. I would not call them the most promising young skaters when they joined Eteri, especially the four-year old. Alina joined at age 12, and she had only had one or two triple jumps, I believe Salchow and Rittberger. Anna S didn't have any.

Sasha T and Alena K were consistently placing below Nastya T at competitions before they all joined Eteri's group. Alina wasn't doing too well either. A lot has changed.

A recent interview from Sambo said that any new students who want to join Eteri's group need to be able to jump triples at the very least.
Also, a mother fainted when Eteri refused to accept her daughter as a student.

Seriously?? That seems like a bit of an exaggeration.

Eteri is amazing and is having an incredible life and is having an incredible career. Russian kids do not get fazed by having a tough coach who rides them hard and sometimes makes them cry. Alina is better for having the coach she does and it's coach has led her to the great young career she is having so far. Again all these beautiful Russian girls are tougher than we think and when your coaches chew their asses out verbally in front of everybody they get upset for 5 minutes and then get better! That is fact.

The harsh comments on Eteri on Ted Barton's Twitter page were insulting and outrageous and unfair. She isnt. perfect.

I've been watching figure skating for decades and I can't ever remember one coach having so much talent in such a short period of time in one discipline in this case ladies figure skating senior and Junior. That is the ultimate testament for Eteri. And also the mother fainting because Eteri did not take her daughter into her school is a great Testament to this coach too. ;)

If you doubt what I wrote, feel free to check. :) I do not want to provide wrong information and I am happy to edit my post if you can find a source that says otherwise.

Is 22 cm a reference to Alina growing? Because that's over 8.5 inches. She didn't grow anything close to that in 3 months. She's currently listed as 158 cm on her isu bio, so if she grew that much in 3 months, she would have been 136 cm last season, or ~4 foot 5.5 inches. Which she obviously wasn't.

Or did you mean another skater? I doubt anyone grew that much in three months though. A high peak growth rate for teens is normally 8-9 cm in a year. Obviously it can vary, but 22 cm in 3 months would be more than eight times faster than that.

She means eteri herself. Eteri was once also a single competive skater but had a training accident where she got terrible injured . Something with her spine I believe. One of the medications she had to take was the reason for her huge growth spurt, she than switched to ice dance

actually, it's not. They took a few really young girls and boys to the main groups who don't have a full set of doubles yet. 2011-2012 year of birth. And there're a full group of rookies who is not in a main groups but still occasionally works with Dudakov and Rosanov

Does anyone have a link to the Russian Nationals ladies schedule in English?

Also, will the events be streamed anywhere online? I'm based in the States, but will be traveling in Mexico, and am hoping to be able to stream on the internet.

Thanks in advance!

I totally agree with this[emoji122]

Those 22cm in 3 months, regardless if due to medication or not, will make me to re-open my pharmacology books and spent my entire Christmas with them. I really got curious.

I've noticed for some unknown reasons video of Sasha's triple Lutz with cantielever entrance in her Big Spender program bacame very popular over facebook and gained about 5 millions of views in sum in about two weeks.

We had a stream last year, but links usually become available a day before the competition or the day of the competition itself. This page always posts links for international competitions, it's worth checking it for nationals as well: https://soyouwanttowatchfs.com/
Links will definitely be posted in the competition threads on this forum as well.

1. There is a counterpart for Europeans, which means that everyone has 4 big comps in a calendar season (or 3 when there are no Olympics).
2. It's pretty low to say that momentum is shifting away from Alina based upon her worlds free skate. That was by far the worst she's ever skated, and she's grown both as a skater and as a person from it. Most Olympic champions don't even go to post-Olympic worlds. Alina did, despite being sick and having to attend many state functions that took away from her training time. You can't say that momentum is shifting away from her because of that. And Alina still held her own at the GPF this year, despite having a minor injury. Silver is not a loss.
3. No one is done after two competitions. Alina is competing at nationals - the biggest competition of them all objectively - and has a good chance to win, if not the BEST chance to win. So, no, momentum has not shifted away from her.

One can make the case because so many skaters skip the World Championships right after the olympics then then one might say in the Olympic years Europeans is more important than world's because no one skips Europeans but many top skaters skip worlds right after the Olympics and understandably so by the way.

I personaly love the european championships [emoji7]

I think most of us do. I’ve discovered several skaters in the earlier flights that I followed and supported well beyond Euros. In the context of this thread I’m certain all of the Russian ladies love it too and we know the value RusFed puts on it. TBH some of the politics we see at RusNats is direct posturing for Euros. It’s a major springboard into Worlds where skaters can increase their momentum at a major ISU Championship.

No skater is untouchable yet we're supposed to assume that those three returning under a new judging system that they largely haven't gotten used to would "undoubtedly" change the world order...

I don't think the new rules make that much difference for them, i actually think the backloading limit would give them an advantage (as they were never strong with backloading elements) or even the +5 / -5 would reward more their jumps.

Her success would depend more on how much are they training now.
