2018-19 Russian Ladies' figure skating

Soon we will also have JunRusNats for exciting competition with amazing talents!

From 3A it's Sasha's turn for a gold - Alena and Anna already got one in the competitions all three compete this season :)

I don't like this "turns" idea. It is OK if Sasha does not win junior nationals to win junior worlds for the second time. With the "turns" it will be someone else.

You mean, if Loena is clean, judges may not underscore her.

That’s a good way of looking at it!

When was the last time there was a podium sweep by any nation? I think it’s possible Russia will sweep but I have a feeling Alexa Paganini will surge.

In both 2015 and 2016, Russia swept the podium:

2015: Elizaveta, Elena, Anna
2016: Evgenia, Elena, Anna

Since 2013, only Kostner could prevent Russian podium sweep. I don't think that Paganini is in this League.

Alexa improved, but I can't see her on the podium yet. Clean Viveca should be able to score well and might surprise :)

It's a joke...

Yay....Together Again :yahoo:

So nice to see

I was so happy to see this on Instagram - and posted by both of them, as well! I'd been wondering what their relationship had evolved to in the past couple of years, but it's so nice to see that they're on good terms now and can support each other. I really loved their rivalry/friendship back in 2014-15 and was really gutted when they were split apart and Sima started struggling. Best wishes to both of them.

I have a feeling JrNats will be just as much a bloodbath as SrNats.

Very excited to get a glimpse of how Valieva and Usacheva score in comparison to the 3A. Also can the coaches council please put Maya Kromykh in?

This year, she skated on the same level with Medvedeva all season.
At russian nationals, she clearly outskated Medvedeva, who was not just 7, but overscored above national average - see PCs in SP and all the level 4s.

While Stasya is indeed propped a lot by rusfed compared to skaters like Samodurova or Tarakanova, and traditionally peaks at rusnats, she deserved her spot this year imho.

I think she should be behind Sofia. Alina and Evgenia were scored generously despite mistakes but in line with international scoring as they do get the benefit of the doubt when they make mistakes internationally too, for right or wrong, I will not dispute their scores. But compared to Sofia, Stanislava was not clean in the free skate, but once again her PCS was well higher than Sofia's, who skated cleaner...they were getting the exact same PCS scores internationally, so I just don't get it.

I agree it was worse last year. In both senior and junior nats last yr she got PCS way higher than Trusova and Kostornaia, even when she bombed in the short, but Trusova and Kostornaia got way higher PCS than Stanislava on the JGP circuit (for good reason). It just makes no sense to me. If they propped up someone who has high potential but happened to bomb I can understand but Stanislava is at best going to get a mediocre placement, and at worst, she can bomb very badly.

I still do wonder, what exactly is the relationship for Stanislava. This is like taboo, many people allude to some connection to rusfed, but no one explicity says what it is.

I dont understand why some people say Medvedeva is over scored on PCS.. IMO she's the worlds best SKATER. I dont see anyone beating her in PCS. Ive watched over and over and over and I just think she deserves every PCS point she gets. It doesn't matter who you really compare to her, she has the better skating overall and program component. I DO this Zagitova was over scored and always has been on her PCS. I am not a fan of her Carmen and especially it being only 2 pts behind Medvedeva in the FS at nationals I thought was a joke. Meds was almost clean and really attacked that program with a vengeance. Zagitova was off time, made 3-4 larger mistakes, and rushed parts of it and still was only 2 pts from Medvedeva. I think Samadurova was also overscored. Other than the fact that she was clean in the event I really think her skating needs a ton of work. She has no expression or flow in the program. To me shes just skating because she has to skate. I think she lacks in transitions, musicality, flow and speed.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess. I am not a figure skating judge, but I found Samodurova's presentation delightful. Yes, she could throw in a few more transitions, but as for the rest, it is OK by me.

Her PCS scores at Russian Nationals were in the mid eights. This is up from the stricter judging that she faced at Skate America (mid sevens) and up somewhat from Rostelcom (high 7s, low 8s). This is to be expected and is more-or-less consistent across judging panels.

Anyway, if the Russian Federation doesn't need her, they can always send her to skate for the USA. ;)

There is something going on behind the scenes in my opinion. What sealed it for me was that rusfed could have easily given Alina .90 extra points somewhere in her score to put their defending olympic champion in 4th to save face (to a degree) and give her more confidence and momentum going into the remainder of the season as Russia's number one senior. But for whatever reason it seems they wanted Stasya to be ahead of her, most likely to justify sending her to future competitions. Because there are several girls who arguably have earned a spot at worlds based on their performance this season or in the near past. It would be relatively easy to justify sending these girls ahead of the #2 senior from nationals given that the three spots should arguably go to the three skater who have a recent world championship or olympic gold medal. But now its much harder to justify these three skaters ahead of their "top" senior from nationals. Personally, I really don't find her skating on the same level as most of the other top russian seniors.

:confused2: i could watch alina over and over again but zhenya's programs this season, even the new sp, don't have that much replay value for me. i don't think skating skills really have anything to do with what your preferences are. and imo there are several skaters in the world who have better ss than zhenya.

A fast way to understand this is to compare her to Kostornaya, who has
much more speed and ice coverage
much more transitions and better quality footwork
much more fluidity into and out of elements
much more grace in upper body movement
and lower PCS than Medvedeva

Sorry, you lost me. Lets agree to disagree. While I will say Kostornaya is in the few Russian skaters that do have a decent PCS.. she isn't anywhere even close to Medvedeva. Evgenia has the edge among everyone. Id say it was generous Kostornaya was even 3 points with in Medvedeva PCS. I would of had her 7-10 points off closer to Samodurova range but higher than her.

... i guess you must be a mega fan of zhenya. she's one of my favourite skaters as well and i do tend to overlook the weaknesses of my favourites (i suddenly can't see anytime alina underrotates or when zhenya falls lol) but i think it would be reaching insane levels of denial to pretend that zhenya, a skater who has struggled with getting lvl 4s all season, somehow is the best skater in the world.

Ok, first of all lets look this ISU document https://www.isu.org/figure-skating/...96-program-component-chart-id-sp-2018-19/file in ISU "Handbooks Single & Pair Skating"
there is a note "NEW - If there is a/are Falls or Serious Errors" for single skating and pairs "9.00 or higher should not be awarded for PE, IN." (i.e. Perfomance and Interpretation).

Second step - lets look scores for FS at last RusNAts when Medvedeva felt on combo 2A+3T. She got 9.25 for Perfomance and 9.43 for Interpretation.

3rd step - lets think, when judges awarded a skater with scores above the acceptable is it overscoring or not?

Interview with Konstantinova and her father, Andrei. I read his father is a karate expert and government official. Is it not allowed to talk about this?

I personally think Sofia will beat Stanislava at Euros, even if both go clean. However, I feel like that may not even be enough to knock Stanislava off the worlds team. I honestly think Liza is the one competing with Sofia for the last spot (based on how well Sofia does), not Stanislava, even though she is not even at Euros. Stanislava and Alina are locks for the team, regardless of their performance at Euros.
