2018-19 U.S. Ladies' figure skating

Also want to add that, Amber had a strong FS! Fall on the final jump but looked like an overall fairly clean protocol. I hope she kills it at nats. She needs to show she can be strong at several competitions in a row.

Again, it's really easy in hindsight to say, she should have done this, but honestly, she made a choice and she experienced the consequences of making that choice. That is part of the recovery process. She is not going to suddenly have perfect 20-20 clarity on the right move. She is going to make decisions that perhaps were not perfectly in her best interest. But she can't sit endlessly like we're doing by considering every possibility.

I do hope her coaches and the other folks she's getting help from will be able to take this experience and help her for a game plan that will enable her to see small wins from there.

ETA:

However, I think that if you come to an event, have your expenses paid, and take a spot that could have gone to another skater, you really have to give it your best effort to compete. I get that you have to do what's best for your mental health, but you've come to event where fans buy tickets to see you and other skaters give a performance. Go out there and do just doubles; you've already traveled halfway around the world to be here. It's pretty clear that her planned elements for the programs did not reflect what she does in practice, so of course she's going to let herself down if her expectation is that she is going to go out and successfully do these elements in competition.

That is what actually Yura Matsuda did. She basically left out both the lutz and flip because her injury wouldn't allow her to do either jump.

I agree that, again in hindsight, Gracie probably should have stuck to the jumps that she could do. Polina Edmunds actually did a good job of making those realistic moves.

She could have used the competition as a chance to show her more artistic side. That Waitress program would have been lovely to watch even with doubles -- the practice video looked really promising.

ETA:
I will say that while she's far from being in top competitive shape, she looked FAR better then when she was touring on Stars on Ice post 2017 Nationals and barely doing double toes in her programs. I hope they'll be able to identify small wins so she can take those with her as she goes forward.

It takes a certain level of conditioning to get through a program of even just all doubles and I'm not sure she was there yet (did 1/7 passes in practice). It's hard to emote or give the choreography its due when you're in survival mode.

To your last point, I agree. This was the first time we've seen beyond a double jump in public since 2017 nationals.

Well, whatever she could do to complete the program successfully. I'd hate to say, go out and do singles and doubles. But honestly if that's where she was at and she really wanted to give the audience something, fine.

I will say that it's SO hard to, even not considering mental health and other issues, to ignore where you were before and not get discouraged

Speaking as a mere mortal (and as a hobby runner basically) I really had to ignore my past running achievements prior to giving birth and accept where I was at when I decided to start running again. It took me three years to get back to where I was pre-kid, and I happy to say I have surpassed that point -- thanks to some wonderful running friends who challenged me along the way -- but it took a lot of hard work along the way and I really had to not get obsessed over achievements and focus more on just getting out there, being consistent with my running.

So I can sympathize with Gracie if it's hard for her to not go out there and try triples, especially since she used to do them so well.

That's the reason why I think the "help" she got so far is far from enough to address the problems. Not to mention the explanation on why she did not do regional and sectionals, or even senior B.

Good grief! She doesn't owe anyone any explanations on why she does or doesn't do anything. And it's up to her and only her to determine if the amount of help she has received is enough or not.

As someone who is completely indifferent on Gracie (as you can see by my attempts to discuss other things in this thread yesterday) I must say that some of the comments in here are vile. It is completely inappropriate to comment on the "help" she's gotten. Therapy is probably one of the utmost personal things to anyone. I can't believe anyone would even dare to bring that up. Saying "she abused the system" when in reality USFS had to pitch her and Rusfed had to invite her. You cannot blame her for the rules.

Of course anyone is free to comment on anything that they would like, but at this point I think everything that could be said has already been said. Does anyone know how Alysa did in her FS this weekend? I can't find any results.

Alysa won her sectionals with a score over 200 !!

Any recent news of Bradie? I am assuming she is working hard on her programs... forgive my ignorance: will she go to the GPF?

Guess I am confused on Megan. Is Skate America not considered an international competition because it is in the US, even though it is a Grand Prix event?

I think it's that Skate America was a month ago. There's a certain window for an international competition to be considered a conflict.

Don't know. She's going to be a Internationaux de France. She has a shot at qualifying for GPF but it's a super deep field.

The international assignment only gives her a bye through Regionals. To get a bye through Sectionals, you have to be lucky enough to have your assignment conflict with Sectionals, or at least one week before or after (supposedly).

Thanks! If she had won would that be a bye to Nationals or would she still have to go through Sectionals?

If she had won, USFS probably would have been impressed enough to send her to Inge Solar to give her a bye to Nationals, basically what they did with Ashley Lin.

ETA: But if the fed wasn't being smart with the talent they had, they would have put her through Sectionals.

No. She did complete a 3A and 3A/2t, however. 138.03 for long program, 212.97 total.

It was exciting to watch (even on a computer). She’s very serious about taking over us ladies. She’s got the highest score of any us lady-this year- and I think Ashley’s silver at worlds is the only one higher that’s international while Karen’s 2017 national title was slightly higher and Bradie and mirai were higher this nationals (I realize it’s not an international competition, but 212 is impressive regardless especially for someone who can’t even compete as a junior yet and has the pcs to match her age)
