2018-19 U.S. Ladies' figure skating

Some skaters have been silent for a while now, and I wonder if they’re competing this season. Paige Rydberg, Haley Beavers, Ashley Lin, Emily Chan. Yes, I know that these are the “B-level” skaters, and none are in the ISP, but still...

Paige Rydberg, Ashley Lin, and Emily Chan already have competed in the new season.

Ashley Lin *is* on the USFS ISP list.
(I don't remember whether she already was on it before Broadmoor Open. Perhaps she was? In any case, she is on it now.)

Random, but Ashley Wagner used to have very good spins. Not extraordinary spins, but good and fast. What happened? Did she stop practicing them? Did she lose flexibility as she got older?
i think her spins are not that bad, yes it has gotten worse compared to few years ago, but she still getting level 4 mostly even though with not that high GOE, its not like she does level 2 and 3 spin. She's also not know for her flexibility yknow. (her layback can be a bit painful to watch tbh, thanks she ditched them now)

They have?!? 😄 All 3 of them? Where? I haven’t heard anyone mention anything about it.

I believe they all did Broadmoor. Haven’t heard Haley’s name in along time though, kind of forgot about her! She was so good a few years ago, I wonder how she’s doing?

I think she has back pain/issues. That and she used to work with John Nicks, who teaches great spins, whereas with Raf she has spent much more time on jumps + rotations. Plus concussions.

which haley?

That's probably because there is no video available. Ashley finished 3rd in the combined event. I believe Emily Chan finished 5th in the Peggy Fleming Trophy event. And Paige Rydberg finished 11th in the SP portion of the combined event, but withdrew from the LP portion of the combined.

You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make the horse drink -- or click on a link. :bang:
I had given the link to official Broadmoor Open results in my post above, so that anyone interested in details would have easy access to some of this season's results for the three ladies.
(Sylvia's site also is very reliable. Just sayin' that Broadmoor Open information was readily available from my post.)

Emily Chan also placed third in SP Only at Broadmoor.
(In addition to placing fifth in Peggy Fleming Trophy.
ETA: And Emily was the top lady :) at PFT, in which ladies and men competed against each other.)

Paige Rydberg and Ashley Lin also competed at Skate Dallas in April 2018 -- as discussed earlier here in this U.S. Ladies thread.
(To state what I hope already is obvious: For more information on Skate Dallas, please CLICK on the links below.)

Videos of Ashley Lin's SP and FS at 2018 Broadmoor Open are available on YouTube.

Easily findable via YT's search function.

ETA:

Forgot to mention that Ashley Lin placed fourth in Aerial Challenge.

She was mentioned multiple times in the Aerial Challenge thread. For example:

And the Aerial Challenge entry list -- including Ashley -- had been posted here in this U.S. Ladies thread:

Ashley Lin also attended USFS ISP camp in June, as mentioned here in this U.S. Ladies thread:

which haley?

I assume Haley Beavers who win Novice Nationals a couple of years back.

I saw her in the stands watching at the Phily International competition last summer. When she won Novice, she was 16 so I assume she is in college now.

Do you know if she still competes? I don’t think she is in college yet, I think if she is, she would be a freshman in the fall. Her Instagram bio still is all about skating, so I would assume she is still into it? I know she didn’t qualify for nationals last year, wonder if she will try again this season?

I don't think she competes anymore.

Videos of Ashley Lin's SP and FS at 2018 Broadmoor Open are available on YouTube.

Ah, I missed this. The performances I would like to see from the Broadmoor Open are Emmanuel Savary's. He finished ahead of Torgashev & Dolensky in the combined event, and it looks as though his SP especially went well; but I haven't heard anything about it being posted. Maybe copyright issues? And the only video I can find of his free has no sound.

I tend to feel like the problem with US Ladies is that the US is used to being on the podium if not the gold medalist in the Ladies so all their female skaters are talked about with that in mind when they're coming onto the scene instead of letting expectation grow with results on the GP or at Worlds. It sets up an all or nothing reality that I think doesn't encourage their development into those placements.

I don't think it's a coincidence that the US Ladies dominance ended with Michelle Kwan's 10-year reign. And I adore MK. I just think there's some dynamic working, when all the girls coming up see this one skater that everyone aspires to be like, rather than choosing their favorite world medalist a la Fleming, Hamill, Lynn, Sumners, Yamaguchi, Kerrigan, Lipinski, etc.

There's a similar dynamic with Russian men. From 1992 to 2006, all the men's olympic gold medalists were Russian [ETA: Correction: Victor Petrenko was, of course, Ukrainian], ending with the multiple-year dominance of Plushenko. What is it? I'm not sure. Is it because Plushenko, (and Kwan) seemed so out of reach? or is it that everyone wants to then skate like Plushenko, or Kwan, so there's a little less diversity in style, a little less of people loving and developing their own uniqueness? Or could it be something else?

When you think about it, though ... Russian pairs and ice dance teams also dominated for much longer. So maybe part of the reason Americans are so out of sorts about not having our ladies' champion at the top is because for so long, the ladies division was the one shining star we could count on.

Actually, I’ve been thinking the same thing for years. Each skating rises, then feels like the need to be like Michelle and bring back US skating. Then they faulter under the pressure.

I think it's simply the fact that there was much less international competition during Kwan's reign. U.S. skaters didn't have to worry about doing the most difficult content AND not messing up even a little bit. That adds a lot of pressure. To the extent Kwan affected the current ladies' headcase problem, it's because Kwan's notoriety encouraged a bunch of young ladies elsewhere in the world with more to skate for (because they can actually make a better living for themselves skating) and more rigorous training programs to begin skating.

Is it true that 2019 nationals single-session tickets go on sale today?
For someone who’s never been to a figure skating competition, I don’t want to miss out!

I attended the Ice Dreams show last evening in Elmsford, NY where Karen, Mirai, Starr and Alysa performed. Both Starr and Alysa did their short programs and looked great. Starr is skating to "Summertime" and Alysa to "Lo Siento/Spanish Flame." Alysa landed a two footed under-rotated 3A, from my perspective but did a clean 3-3 in the second half.

Karen skated to her SOI program "Never Enough" and popped a lutz but landed everything else. Mirai did her SOI program to "No Good Deed" and also landed all of her jumps. She looked better here than when I saw her on SOI. I hope Mirai keeps competing, but if not, she should do more shows b/c her personality comes out more when she's not concentrating on landing combos.

From my perspective, I think Starr is looking very strong and more mature and I think she has a shot at the Sr. Nationals podium. Alysa will likely repeat as Jr. Champion, unless she is allowed to skate as a senior at Nationals?

As for Karen, other than the popped lutz, she looked great, but she is more of a question mark for me.

Yes, Alysa has said she will be competing at senior nationals and hopes for a top 10 finish. I think she'll be pleasantly surprised :)
