2018-19 U.S. Ladies' figure skating

Shoutout to Ashley Lin all the way in Austria for pulling up all the way to 4th with a 3rd place freeskate after a disappointing short that put her in 12th. She finished just off the podium by 0.06 points. I think she has the mental willpower of someone who we should be looking out for at Nats this year.

She's flying under the radar but nonetheless having a great season with scores on par with the big names, save Mariah and Bradie. Looking forward to seeing how she does at Nationals, as I expect to see her in the last group or near it.

I’m generally rooting for everyone but I’m not ashamed to admit that I want a Mariah Bell wins Nationals moment!!

I think cat curling is about the only thing higher up on my sports wishlist :dance2:

Am I reading that she isn't doing the 3Lo? Hopefully it's because it isn't consistent yet and not the result of hip problems that prevented Yuna from doing the jump. She seems to use her body more effectively in the practice videos and that's very exciting to see because it shows she's serious about being a full-package skater.

The 3Lo jump was always a hit and miss jump for her so I’m not surprised she isn’t doing it yet.

I just want to take a moment to :yahoo: :hap10: :dance3: that Gracie is at her GP event, she is practicing, she has programs and plans a 3-3 in each program.

:taunt: to everyone who thought she would withdraw.

She might not skate clean and she might not medal and she might make a lot of mistakes, but it's all part of the process! I just want to see a happy Gracie and I'm so thrilled we get to see her on competitive ice again.

All my dreams come true. I can barely wait anymore.:yahoo::clap::hap57::hap10: There just aren't enough emoticons in the world.

i'm a little  on this as well. i didn't think any of her comments were snide/mean to any skaters. she gave her opinions on music choices and such, but was generally supportive of everyone while being equally humorous and sarcastic. she also tweeted this at the end of the ladies event:

https://twitter.com/GraceEGold/status/949497020347072512

Nah, they probably confused her with Wagner. They’re both blondes after all. Even if Gracie said some shady things (which didn’t in this case btw) at least she didn’t say them about her direct competitors and then play victim.

She did make some comments during Ashley's free skate, but I don't think she intended it to be mean. Though when Gracie first moved up as a senior, Ashley made some snide comments, I think they've become good friends since then, and I think Ashley has been very supportive of Gracie in the last several years. And as I recall it could have been taken wrong, and that was why she took it down. I Didn't like Ashley for a while because of the snotty things she said in a TSL interview summer of 2013 I think. But if Gracie has gotten over it, and she clearly seems to have gotten over it, then fans need to move on as well.

I thought it was interesting to see Gracie says that she's at 30-40 percent of where she wants to be athletically in the next 4 years, and to evaluate at the end of each season. I appreciate that she is really thinking things through.

I’m 99 percent sure on Twitter she had a snarky comment about Ashley LP that she then deleted. And my phone won’t let me quote but MACY that is a really good analysis, I didn’t really think of them going after her possible URs. With as strict as they’ve been this season on(most) skaters with that issue her team will definitely want to avoid them as much as possible.

She is really good friends with Ashley and I remember that comment, it was something more criticizing LaLa Land than Ash's performance. Ashley and Gracie have been pretty good friends for the past 2 years so it was likely more along the lines of friendly banter than snide.

The main jist of her comments I remember was she didn't like gloves, she made a lot of comments about skaters she did like. She praised Hannah's Hunger Games program. She was snarky at times but it was all in good fun and not about hating or being snide.

The 3Lo jump was always a hit and miss jump for her so I’m not surprised she isn’t doing it yet.

Really her 3Loop was one of her most stable jumps in the 2015-2016 season. People said every competition that she should change her short program flip to a loop because her loop was so solid and always there even on her worst days.

"I might as well come back because at least I'm still better than these losers." "It doesn't matter how well she does, at all! Victory regardless!"

She did not say these things... or anything LIKE these things.
The problem with Twitter and social media in general is that when you type a sentence, the reader isn't able to pick up on inflection.
Be careful making up quotes " " in someone's name

She was feeling sassy and noticeably energized by being at Nats.. she loves the sport. Makes sense.
She was as critical as all of the rest of us are about gloves, song choices, technicalities, hair do's, etc.

I'm so over-the-top excited for Rostelecom Cup... specifically Gracie's comeback! Go Team USA!

I know they are friendly now, and Honestly I don’t care if Gracie is snarky or not. I like snark! It can be very humorous. But let’s call it what it is. She had her fair share of bratty moments over the years just like all the other us ladies and yet it never gets held against her or brought up like the others. It’s not a crime to be bratty in this sport, in fact it can make things a lot more entertaining. BUT It’s the double standard that bothers me. When Gracie is snarky, or makes comments about her competitors, it’s all in good fun, she never meant to hurt nobody, when Ashley is snarky she’s a jealous diva out to ruin lives. And remember alllll the pushback and outrage when Mirai made that offhand comment about Gabby Daleman at the Olympics? Or all the anger and tsking over Karen snarking on her boot company on instagram? Yeah. Can you imagine the outrage if one of them had asked their coach to throw away their team USA jacket in the trash in front of a bunch of reporters? We would literally NEVER hear the end of it. This is what I meant last week in this thread when I said that Gracie gets coddled by fans in ways that other us ladies never do and I don’t understand why.

There is a difference between having bratty moments and being snarky. Someone was calling her comments snide on her and acting like it was a problem. She was very much taken to task for her behavior at 2017 nationals and openly attacked for saying she thought she still deserved to be on the team for worlds. She has been criticized for her behavior many times by many people. All you need to do is open a comments section below her 2016-2017 skates or interviews to find lots of rampant criticism and people calling out her diva moments. Until the recent revelation of her struggles lots of people showed her no mercy, ripping apart how she was scored, her programs, and her inconsistency in competition. Saying no one has talked about those things or taken her to task for her bratty moments is revisionists history. When TSL revealed the jacket story she got so much hate. She was one of the most hated skaters for her scoring, people called her overrated and believed she was overscorred. Her fans of course didn't join in cause they're fans. Ashley's fans have defended her behavior, Karen's fans defended hers, that's what fans do.

I'm supporting Gracie, her behavior in the past does not taint anything she is putting out today, nor was her twitter ever belittling to skaters. She's had some bad moments but gotten through the worst of it. I hope internet critics leave her be during her comeback, the last thing she needs is the same hatred she got between 2015-2017.

Ok, I'm going to put this out here.

Ashley fans, can you just give it a rest for a moment?

Gracie is competing. After all Gracie has been through, fans are excited to see Gracie again. Why is it necessary to bring how wrong you think Ashley was done into the conversation? Is she competing at Rostelecom?:scratch2:

Would it really hurt to say "I'm excited to see Gracie again." Full stop. End of sentence. End of paragraph. End of post.

I know I am:hap10:

I hope Gracie skates well and is satisfied with her progress whatever that might be. It is really emotional seeing her on competitive ice again after everything she went through.

Also- being picked apart on social media is not good for anyone's mental health. I think it would be best if we let interviews and tweets from years ago go. Gracie was clearly motivated by watching Nationals- that shows a lot of respect for her fellow competitors.

Ha, maybe it’s just me. I just remember her popping it or having issues with it.

I also think, unfortunately, women athletes are held to a much higher standard here. Male athletes can say the worst things about each other, be friends again a few hours later, and the public embraces them anyway. With women, you say the wrong thing and people hold it against you forever. I admit that I fall for this bias, like when Ashley was expressing disappointment about the 2018 Nationals result. When I think back to the amount of work she put in and putting her life on hold for 4 years to make an Olympic team and to miss it by a hair, anyone deserves a bit of compassion and forgiveness for saying the wrong thing in that moment.

Ashley fans, can you just give it a rest for a moment? ...

El, my friend, do you really want to dictate what people say and how they say it, on a non-fanfest thread? Who would read this thread, if everyone did as you say?

Over the last 5 or 6 pages (at least, I'm not doing the math) pages of this thread, about 85% of the posts are about Gracie, and about 95% of those posts are positive. Again, haven't done the math.

And several of us "Ashley fans," as you want to call us, have said positive things and given sincere well-wishes about and to Gracie ... saying such things the way we want to phrase them. Several of us "Ashley fans" are actually and/or equally "Gracie fans" !
