2018-2019 GP Assignments

We're still waiting on a couple of consequential possible retirements for that will affect the Grand Prix seeding -- Carolina, who will either be the #4 seed or make Gabby the #6 seed if she doesn't do another season; and Anna and Luca, on whose potential retirement Alexandra Stepanova and Ivan Bukin eagerly await news.

Do we have any clear evidence that Weaver & Poje are signing up for this coming season? I know many people think it's likely, but they hadn't committed last I heard. However, I don't follow them on social media so I don't know if they've made any comments about preparations for next season. Also, as far as I know, still no official word about Bobrova & Soloviev. In this case, a team very likely not to skate next season based on her statements early last season and on the fact that they didn't go to Worlds. But not official. And probably more important to Stepanova & Bukin than a 6th or 7th place seed. Sometimes being at the bottom of a seeding group and getting a tough assignment is worse than being at the top of a seeding group and chasing down the competition. Though this year there is likely to be more breathing room with teams getting out. And Stepanova & Bukin will likely be a host pick for at least one event, regardless of their seeding position.

Also, as far as I know, still no official word about Bobrova & Soloviev.

I believe Bobrova is taking at least a year off of competition, but it's unclear if Soloviev is as well or if he's considering taking up with a new partner.

The last report I heard was that if he was going to return, it would be with Bobrova. (This is why I don't have much faith in announcements prior to the Olympics. Most athletes really don't know what they're going to do or how they are going to feel about retiring or continuing to compete until after the event is over).

Anyway, I think with a lot of the dance teams there is no financial benefit in officially announcing retirement. That they might as well tour and sell the possibility that they may continue. Plus, in several cases, federations may be encouraging their top teams to continue or wait & see before making an announcement. (Italy, for example, finally has three spots at Worlds). And, of course, there's the whole Virtue & Moir argument. That there's no need to retire now. You might be able to take off time & still come back.

Essentially, I think we are going to have wait for the GP lists to come out. But a number of teams are likely not to be on it. (And some may be on it and still not compete. Italy and Great Britain, for example, could drag this out as long as they want if their top athletes are at all on the fence).

Yuzuru is a favorite at any stop and it's up to him to choose where to compete. SA and SC are back to back but have least travel. NHK and SC may be more desirable than SC/RC or SC/IdF.

Yuzuru is not seeded, so he is in the category of INVITED SKATER. That means he really has little or no say as to where he will compete. He may have preferences, but it is all in the luck of the draw---the order in which the hosts pick the first round of non-seeded skaters. Probably many of the hosts would like to have him at their event, so it all depends on which hosts get to choose first. The only exception is if Japan names him as a host pick before all the selection starts. Then only the second event would be open to host selection.

Me too! and that will happen every time I see this thread near the top:biggrin:

The same, but on the other hand, I hope that when they are finally out, some alert kindly soul will post a new thread - with a title something like:

THE GP ASSIGNMENTS ARE OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If capitals and multiple exclamation marks are ever warranted, I think it would be here… ;)

I hope so too:laugh:

Bit of goldfish memory going on here from GS as a collective

Last year was the exception, not the rule. It's ALWAYS been the end of June. I'll wager we won't see May again until the next Olympic year.

Haha, saw the bolded text of your post first and my heart skipped a beat.
Okay, calm down. One more month...one more:hpull:
