2018-2019 GP Assignments

I’m actually kind of glad Eunsoo didn’t get the NHK spot, since it’s just a week away from Rostelecom Cup. With the three spots at Skate Canada open, Eunsoo should likely be given one of them. If not, then she’d have to rely on someone withdrawing from GP Finland since their home skaters are not going for the final (they don’t have two spots anyways).

looks like Alicia and Veronik will skate at home... YAY!

ermm and for those asking : of course Canada has other skaters... they are just not likely to get an assignment even at home.. but there is Michelle Long, Sarah Temura who were both formerly on the National team but not so in shape right now... Deguise Leveille is doing better and better and there is Emy Decelles and her twin sister Kim also still skating at senior level... there are about 20-30 entries at Nationals so... why is there are question about not having other skaters to fill home spots? There are... are they all competitive, no... but it's not like it's a complete twilight zone here...

I know the "host spot" can go outside the top 75 season best, but can a country have two host spots? Or do two skaters need to be in the official list?

I think host spots can go to anyone. Although I'm not sure if the score requirements would be in place if they opted to give the spot to a skater not form the host country.

All three home berths are technically host spots. China has filled it's lower two dance spots with unestablished teams more than once. (I don't know what # they were ranked at, but certainly not high enough to be on the replacement list). Some Federations elect not to invite their own athletes if those athletes do not meet a certain level of internal criteria (Japan and France obviously do this); however, I don't believe there are any ISU requirements. The ISU does recommend that athletes meet technical minimums.

"Daleman has taken a break from training to focus on her mental health." - I hope Gabby feels better soon, I'm gutted to hear she's struggling and wish her all the best

Kailani: WS40, SB44

Mallet: WS182, SB41

Pineault: WS78, SB56

If Kailani doesn't end up with one of these spots I swear...

Mallet was off for two years with an injury. Let’s be reasonable. And she’s higher on this seasons SB list.

I'm all for giving one to Eunsoo and one to Hanul. Eunsoo has been skipped over for athletes that already have two spots. And Hanul has been skipped over for athletes that already have one or two.

(Not the Canadian host spots, of course. Those have been doled out as expected, I think).

Erm those are canadians getting host spots. Try again

ETA on top of that, SCI already invited Kerry and A/W i mean... it's almost a home event for Australia. just like ACI.

I'm not disputing that; I don't have much of a problem with Mallet getting the spot. I have a big problem with Pineault who is still a considerable way below Kailani getting a spot, just as I did with Austman. There are still two spots left to fill; if Kailani doesn't get one of those I will be very cross.

Does anyone know why Finland didn’t keep two host spots at the outset? Like both Finnish girls are going now, but only because one is replacing someone else??

you can be cross all you want but I think that SCI has to invite a skater who has 1 GP event to give them a second... i may be mistaken here.... but if that's the case, Craine doesn't have a GP, and a couple girls like Andrews and Lim do...

Both Mallet and Pineault were HOST PICKS, and neither would have been able to get a GP event by any other means. Mallet is not on the SB list that is used for GP selection (it's the 2017-2018 SB list) because she didn't compete last season. Alicia Pineault is on the SB list, but at #88---way past the #75 limit for GP selection. They got those spots because they were replacing two ORIGINAL host picks. Any host is entitled to replace host picks with its own skaters, and there are no eligibility requirements for host picks.

In some cases, a host doesn't have a suitable replacement within its own ranks, so has to go outside to find a replacement. This can happen with Pairs or Dance vacancies if the host isn't strong in those disciplines, but Canada is strong in all disciplines and didn't have a need to look elsewhere for replacements.

BTW, there is no rule that a host has to choose a skater who already has one event over a skater who has none.

Of the ladies on the substitute list, Skate Canada can choose a US skater since currently only one US skater is on the SC roster, and that is a consideration, given limited time and travel. Craine and Lim both train in the US, so they also meet travel restrictions.

Japan is maxed out on US ladies. They may wait to see the SC choice before naming theirs.
