2019-20 U.S. Ladies Figure Skating

I also wonder if mentally it helps her because training the 3a was what she was training at her peak. So working on these jumps helps her to come back stronger than before. And honestly, no she doesn’t have the body type that most of the ladies (or men) have that have successfully landed quads, but she was jump a high, strong impressive jumper at her peak. She might be able to do it. And what s beauty those jumps could be.

Completely disagree with your body type comments, especially considering Gracie's own battle with eating disorders.
Take a good look at some of the ladies skaters who trained/attempted/landed 3As and/or quads in the 80s/90s/2000s.
Midori Ito
Tonya Harding
Miki Ando
Surya Bonaly

None of which were skinny little waifs.

You’re right about the historical ones. I was thinking I guess more of the younger up and comers. I’ve heard conversation about how even if Gracie comes back at the same level as she was at her peak that she won’t be competitive, and maybe this is a sign she’s been paying attention and upping her game.

For what it's worth, I just saw on TSL's Facebook that she was in a boot at Champs Camp, so hopefully it's a minor sprain or fracture that will allow her to make the GP. But still, not great timing by any means.

Not good at all. I guess we will know something soon.

Her problem was never her technical ability, her jumps were top notch when landed. Her issues were mental and if she can put it all together she could be the top American lady again. I think I remember her saying in an interview that's her goal, another National title.

Is this about Gracie?

Isabelle Inthisone's Free - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PbXLXRksGhk

3Lz+3T, 2F+2T, 3Lo, 2A+3T< (Fall) / 3F, 2A, and 3S

Isabelle seems immensely composed and does not rush the jumps. The doubled 3F seems to be a lack of timing rather than nerves. Cannot wait to see her growth.

Gabriella Izzo's Free - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jJsoTzNOes

3F+3Lo, 2Lz, 3T, 3Lz (Fall) / 3F, 2A, and 2A+2T

Gabriella gets her 3F+3Lo ratified alongside the 3F+3T from the Short. Impressive outing for Izzo in a difficult field.

Had they competed anywhere else, both ladies would have placed within the Top 6/7. Compared to last year, our crop of junior ladies are doing much better. Ting had the highest score last year on the Junior Grand Prix circuit with 172 whilst everyone else was >157. Speaking of Ting, IT'S HER BIRTHDAY TODAY. Thus, let us wish our little rising star the happiest of birthdays.

I’m glad Hanna Harrell is getting a second jgp assignment. She’s so good! But the jumps are so inconsistent because of, I’m sure of it, the rippon feature. She seems to get off balance with her arms up. Maybe for her combo she should try doing a regular 3lutz and only do the rippon feature on the 3toe, like Kostornaya does? Just a thought...

Hopefully Gabriella Izzo will get a second assignment too. She is quite good as well. She had a bad free, true, but she was woefully underscored in pcs in her short program.

It also helps to work on something new. Something you couldn't do before. Rather than focusing on "getting back" to where she was before she is focusing on getting better and she'll pass the getting back stage along the way without it being the end goal.

The 'new' female athletes are focused on fast rotation - that's how they get their triples and quads out. Nobody was attempting quads back then, but 3A jumpers a decade+ ago were muscular and all about big jumps.

Surya Bonaly attempted quads in competition numerous times in the 90s.
Midori Ito never went for them in competition but I seem to remember it been said she did them in training.
Tonya Harding could also land quad loops in training too.

Agree that their jumping style was very different, Midori and Tonya in particular had enormous and powerful jumps with amazing height and length to them.

It's also worth noting that Harding was 5'1" and Ito 4'9". They may have been muscular, but they were also tiny, especially Ito.

You know who else was tiny...….Kristy Yamaguchi. Believe it or not, she was even shorter than Tonya when I saw them together at Skate America. All the skaters were tiny but Kristi was also thin as a rake. She is listed at 4'11" and since she had just finished
her pairs career with Rudy, she was easily the thinnest of all the ladies.

Kristi was underrated when it came to jumps. She might not have had 3As or quad attempts like Ito, Harding and Bonaly but she was nailing 3Lz-3T in 1992. Which was impressive technical content back then, she had better artistry also, very much a well balanced complete package kind of skater. Her only major weakness was the Salchow and occasionally the Loop, probably because of her pairs skating background before concentrating solely on singles.
