2019-20 U.S. Ladies Figure Skating

Mariah was so beautiful today. She has really improved the consistency of her jumping and I loved the choreography. She brings a mature presence to the ice that is somewhat rare to see these days.

There are a lot of "ifs," but she does have a somewhat plausible path to the final. Assuming Shcherbakova wins in China next week, You Young and Tuktamysheva will probably round out the podium, giving one of them 24 points (although Miyahara definitely has a shot too, if she's clean and one of the 3A girls falters). Mariah's next event is in Russia. Assuming Trusova wins there, she'll be batting it out for 2nd with Miyahara and Medvedeva. If she were to get 2nd, then it would go down to total GP scores with whoever else ends up with 24 points. Since Mariah outscored Liza by about 5 points at her first event, her best path probably looks something like this:

-Shcherbakova wins in China; Tuktamysheva (or possibly Miyahara) is second
-Trusova wins in Russia; Mariah is second with a higher total GP score than Liza and/or Miyahara

Therefore, the final lineup would be:

Trusova
Kostornaia
Shcherbakova
Kihira
Zagitova
Bell

So, again, a fairly plausible path, but there are a lot of dependencies. Either way, she's looking the best she ever has!

Mariah was brilliant! So happy to see her on the podium, she delivered two excellent programs with clean jumps.

I still hate her Britney SP music but she sells it well so I forgive her

I don't think Mariah's programs this season compare to last year's, but the fact that the triple-triple is looking good will help her a lot. It could be closer between her and Bradie this year.

The fact that Mariah beat Alina in the free skate is HUGE for her. If Alina’s pcs were scored to what she actually puts out on ice instead of ~the Olympic gold medalist bonus~ then Mariah would be walking away with the silver today. Oh well, she can so proud none the less! She’s never looked or skated so beautiful and mature. I actually hate the song hallelujah but her program is so gorgeous I don’t even mind it! Hoping for another great showing at cup of Russia, she’s gonna need to be at her best to overcome the pcs boost Evgenia will receive.

The tech panel was... yeah. Not taking anything away from Mariah but there were so many weird calls. Alina's PCS score was fair for what she puts on the ice. And no, Mariah wouldn't be walking away with silver if they called her URs. Cup of Russia is going to be much harder for her and I doubt she'll get the same scores as today, especially with Sasha and Zhenya being home favorites. But wow, her consistency has definitely improved and she's a great performer.

Mariah did get a ur call? Just about everyone did I think. And no way did Alina deserve highest pcs in both programs, especially in long when she had a fall and not when Mariah Kaori and Alena skated as well as they did. But that’s not really a discussion for the US ladies thread ✌🏻

What areas of her PCS do you think are worse than Mariah's?

Zagitova still skates way bent over at the waist, and that's why she botched her first jump --- I could see it coming. She bent over too far picking in for the lutz, and down on two hands she went. She was lucky that it wasn't called a fall.

It used to be that Alina rarely got any tech calls, but they went after her at IDF:
3z!<, 2a+3t<, 3z!<+3lo<

All Alena Kostornaia got was 3f! on her 3-jump combo

Mariah got 3z< on her final jump

And Sotskova had every single jump called < or <<
ez!<

Best I’ve ever seen Mariah skate. I love the long program, but I wish she would ditch the short and use last years brilliant short.

I notice that Adam Rippon is now listed as one of Mariah's coaches, along with Raf.

Maybe that's old news, and I've just noticed.

Gabriella Izzo has 65+ sp score at Asian Open. She must’ve done remarkably well. Is this a senior competition?

I finally found a link to results: http://hksu.org/event/CSHKG2019/

Protocols say Izzo did triple flip/triple loop combo, solo triple lutz and double axel. Great job!! Especially since she struggled so much on the jgp. Hope she'll have a good freeskate!

And way to go Mariah Bell - so pleased for her today at GP France. And fifth place for Starr was a nice result too!
