2019-20 U.S. Ladies Figure Skating

does anyone know if planned content will be released for nationals? i am interested to know if Gracie is keeping the same layout as sectionals or if she will be attempting something more difficult.

I doubt she would plan more difficulty at this point. She hasn't done any 3T combinations of the six she's planned (4 x 3Lz3T, 2 x 2A3T) and missed quite a few other jumps.

I'm sure that a spot will be reserved for Gracie at Skate America, assuming she does OK at Nationals. After the top three--Alysa, Bradie and Mariah-- things are wide open, so we'll see. I would think she would at least be somewhere between 6th and 10th.

The reason I think if she does well at nationals that she'll make skate america is I believe she will go to competitions after and continue to build momentum.

Emily Zhang just won the silver medal at Mentor Torun with her FS score of 105.39.

She earned the 4CC TES minimum in the SP and the Worlds TES minimum in the FS.

Unless you’re at her rink every day, how can you possibly know what shape Gracie is in right now?
Well I’m expecting she’s in about the same or slightly better shape than at sectionals. Doesn’t seem unreasonable to me, certainly not worthy of getting snippy over.

Congrats to Emily Zhang who finished in second place at her very first international competition representing Team USA. Emily landed four triples (3S, 3Lz, 3F, and 3Lo). This was her debut so I'm sure she dealt with newfound nerves and this competition will only make her stronger.

this was my first time watching her, she has loads of potential. she already skates with a really nice maturity and uses her upper body and arms very well. if she can clean up her jumps and get a 3+3 under her belt she could be competitive.

Emily actually has a consistent 3S+3Lo, but it did not quite happen today. She hit it at Regionals and Sectionals really well.

Her layout from Sectionals:
- 3S+3Lo, 3Lz, 3F+2T, 2A / 3F, 3Lo, and 2A+2T+2Lo

She could upgrade the last combo to a 2A+3T+2Lo and attempt a 7 triple program.

Have you listened to her Ice Talk interview yet? If not, you might find it interesting.

Yes, I did before my first post. Did you interpret her comments as indicating she’s in dramatically better form than at sectionals? I interpreted it as her having continued improving, but still not expecting to medal and hoping for cleanish skates.

KC IMO was better than her sectionals this year because she hit her 3-3 and had more difficult choreography/transitions/spins. I would be thrilled if she hit her 3-3 and no falls but two popped triples at nationals this year, that would be an absolutely amazing improvement. People expecting more IMO are setting unrealistic goals for her at this stage. But I’m willing and happy to be pleasantly surprised.

The main thing I took out of Gracie’s interview is that it took quite awhile - until July/August - before things came together enough that she even felt like she could compete at Regionals, and that she’s been working really hard since Sectionals. She’s focusing on next season and not whether she medals this year, but she’s also viewing competing at Nats as a step forward on her journey to being truly competitive again at the elite level. She said that this year her goal is to perform two clean / close to clean, well-executed, athletic programs and to look like she belongs there, and that going forward she’ll be working to both up her content and achieve more artistic programs (I’m paraphrasing a bit on all of this).

So to answer your question, I’m not sure what kind of content / transitions we’ll see in her programs or where she’ll place, but I do think we’ll see a different skater than we saw at Sectionals - and hopefully, a cleaner one. She’s always been one of my favorites, so I’m hoping for the best.

I remember being disappointed not in her but for her. Thought I remembered some falls, but I often remember incorrectly.

Congrats to Audrey Shin and Kate Wang who both executed Short programs without any falls. Both ladies are in the Top 10. Best of luck to them in the Free.

She earned the 4CC TES minimum in the SP and the Worlds TES minimum in the FS.

And she easily got the Jr Worlds TES minimums. I'd be surprised if she ended up competing at 4CC and very surprised if she gets Worlds.

We have loads of talented Junior ladies all vying for the Junior Worlds slots. If Hanna is fully recovered come Nationals and Junior Worlds, I think Alysa and her plus another lady will represent the USA. If Hanna is still injured then I see the top contenders being composed of either Starr, Emily, Isabelle Inthisone, Calista Choi, Kate Wang, Audrey Shin, Sarah Jung, or Lindsay Thorngren. Kate seems to have grown and has gone back to her 3T+3T since her growth probably affected the timing of her 3Lz+3T. Isabelle earns good GOEs on her elements and has been on an incline since her debut this year, having improved tremendously from her summer competitions. Calista has yet to land a clean 3-3 but she has the highest components and the potential to earn very high GOE. Sarah will need the 3A to keep up with the other ladies who are more consistent, but she has loads of potential to improve from her previous season's best. All in all, it's so reassuring to see so many talented ladies. Of course, not everyone's trajectory will lead to the Olympics but having depth and versatility is just as crucial as having three or four top ladies. Best of luck to ALL our ladies.

PS: Did not know that Audrey had such great edges and components. Her musicality and edge-work are top-notch for a junior lady.

Audrey Shin is near the 18:30 min mark and Kate Wang is near the 51:30 min mark.

I think she are harsh on sarah. She has wonderful and beautiful skating. She is a ballerina on ice. She does not just need a 3A to keep up with the other girls. She has amazing tripLe amazing and triple triple that can back her up. In my eye, her skating improved so much and I think will be much improved even more when we watch her nationals and she has good consistency if you compare to the other girls who had more experience internationally. And I don't think they would send someone who didn't make it to nationals. Kate Wang skating need to be improved to catch up to the other girls too. Cause since she done have 3LZ-3T at the moment she need components to help her out, as we saw in the YOG

Kate Wang has been going through a growth spurt, and that can affect her ability to execute some of her jumps for a time, until she adjusts to her new longer legs.

The thing I love about Kate is how she goes with the flow. She doesn't really freak out during her skate or getting her scores. For all we know she has a good poker face, but she just nods and takes in the information. I thought she had shown some improvement since seeing her during the jpg and even since I saw her at Pacific Coast sectionals.

Kate has, in my opinion, improved quite drastically. I rewatched her skates from Russia and compared it to her YOG performance and she now possesses more flow on the ice and her jumps are bigger. That 3T+3T was huge. Plus, after she readjusts her timing and gets used to her growth spurt, I’m sure we’ll see more tangible growth skating skills wise. Additionally, it is kind of insane that between her first/second competition of the summer up to Russia JGP, Kate managed to put together two clean skates consistently. As someone noted, she does not show her nervousness and that bodes well for her future as a competitor.
