2019-20 U.S. Ladies Figure Skating

Immensely proud of Audrey for having shown everyone why the US Federation and her fans have shown so much faith in her. When Audrey HITS, her edges, musicality, and jumps are simply stunning. Although she did receive two under-rotation calls, Audrey has shown VAST improvements from her Russian Junior Grand Prix outing and proves that setbacks can sometimes be our greatest motivators. Audrey has been posting clips of her landing under-rotated 4T. Audrey will surely use this newfound confidence to make strides in her career. She has put the gauntlet down for those vying for the Junior Worlds spots.

I am saddened by Kate’s performance but she’s still only 14 and has so much room to grow and improve. Kate experienced a growth spurt mid-season and her jumps don’t have the click or timing since she has to readjust to her new body. I am hopeful that she will find her rhythm once again.
 
Audrey is such a beautiful skater. She is stunning. Sorry not to mention her (in my thread with the review), but she did really well today. A fall (remember, so did the numbers 3 and 4) isn't the end of the world. I liked watching her.
 
Is there a path for the Junior ladies to keep 3 spots without Hanna? I always thought she was a solid top 10 contender at Jr Worlds if relatively healthy (even higher with great skates, obviously) and I don't know who else I could say that about.

Barring disaster, Alysa should be somewhere between 1-4
 
If the team is composed of Alysa, Audrey, and Isabelle, I think we have a pretty good chance. A clean Isabelle can earn 60+ in the Short and 115-120 in the Long. A clean Audrey can earn 60-65 in the Short and 115-123 in the Free. A clean Alysa can earn 70-73 in the Short and 140-155 in the Long. If Alysa places within the Top 3, as long as one of the girls places within the Top 10, we will keep our 3 spots and the maximum Junior Grand Prix slots. 3 Russian ladies, 1 or 2 Korean ladies, 1 or 2 Japanese ladies, and Alysa might make up the Top 7. Thus, numbers 8 through 10 is anyone’s game.

I think the US has a decent chance at retaining 3 spots, but would need the second US lady to really complement Alysa. If Alysa is 3rd, there's not that much wiggle room actually.

RUS - Valieva, Sinitsina, Usacheva
KOR - Haein, Seoyeong Wi
JPN - Mana, Tomoe

Aside from Alysa, I don't see the US ladies being able to place higher than the above ladies (barring big mistakes), so #1-8 are gone already. Seoyeong and Tomoe score very well, but I wouldn't be too surprised either if they make a lot of mistakes, though they've looked excellent at recent competitions.

The remaining two US ladies would need to contend with the likes of Alessia Tornaghi/Lara Naki Gutmann (ITA), Alina Urushadze (GEO), Emily Bausback/Alison Schumacher/Kaiya Ruiter (CAN), Ekaterina Kurakova (POL), Niina Petrokina/Eva Lotta Kiibus (EST), Maria Levushkina (BUL).

A lot of the aforementioned ladies have scored in the 160-180 zone, and have placed higher than the US ladies on the JGP. I think Audrey Shin has a lot of potential and scored well at YOG, but still below Urushadze and Alessia. Alessia and Ekaterina are especially formidable based on recent results.

The second US lady will really have to perform well (along with Alysa of course) to keep that 3rd spot!

I personally don't think it is fair to send Audrey shin to junior worlds. She didn't make nationals and usually, junior world selections are based on national placements.

i doubt she'd be able to get into the top 5. i would say maybe 6-8. there's a lot of talent with the Russians, Koreans, Japanese and Alysa and i don't think she'd be able to beat most of them.

This is Starr's 3rd or 4th year as a senior and i don't think they would even consider sending her back to jr worlds. i think they have enough talent to choose from on the junior level.

I think they must be considering her because they sent her to a competition as a junior in December. Golden spin I believe.

Actually I think they will send Starr or Audrey depending on how nationals go. The girls are talented but most of them performed weakly on the a JGP circuit with the exception of Gabriella, Katie (now struggling with a Growth spurt) and Isabelle. It doesn’t leave a lot of options when USFS wants to keep three slots. I think the initial team would’ve been Hanna, Ting, and Alysa. However, they needed to make a backup plan. I think Audrey will definitely be sent to the JW camp to compete for a spot because of her strong skates at YOG.
 
For the US to keep 2 spots in every JGP event next year, the US would have to have a lady among the top 3 countries at JW. If the Russians swept the podium, e.g., Alysa would have to place no lower than 5th (3 Russians would count as one country)

For the US to retain 3 spots at 2021 JW, Alysa must place top 3 and one of the other US ladies must place top 10.

Other than Alysa, is there another US Junior would could beat Starr? If not, I hope we send Starr there as she is, IMO, not a contender as a Senior.

Right now Audrey has the highest junior score with 176 and was seventh place with a reduced amount of athletes. Add 1 Russian, 1 American, 1 Japanese, and one Korean and she’s 11th. The next highest junior score was 165. That would’ve put Isabelle 10 at thr YOG and potentially 14th at JW. The score just aren’t high enough to take the risk. Audrey and Alysa could keep three spots. Anyone else would have to have a substantial improvement in both consistency and skating skills.
 
Isabelle’s 167 was with an under-rotated 3Lo and she attempted a new layout for the Free for the first time. I think the plan is to now have a 3F+3T, 3Lz+3T, 2A, 3Lo, 3S, 3F, and 2A+2T+2Lo. She gets good GOE on her jumps, but not so much her spins. If she can get higher levels and more GOE, she should be within the 175-185 range. If Audrey does not get dinged for her under-rotation and executes a clean Short and Long, I expect her to be in the upper 180s. Of course, the ice is slippery so anything can happen. Best of luck to our ladies. Nationals begins in a week or so.
 
I think Starr is very much on the radar for JW as she just did a junior comp for the first time in awhile.

Really she is in the hunt for pewter along with others.

Junior World selection procedures are based on more than Nats placements.

Seems possible that Audrey would be invited to JW selection camp (I hope so :pray:). If so, I think it will be extra-important for her to do well there.

Excerpt from USFS selection procedures for JW:

To create a pool of athletes to be considered for selection to the World Junior Team, the International Committee will take into consideration the performance (which can include performance data, placement, competitive depth of field, and element markers) at the events listed below in priority order:
1. Current U.S. Figure Skating Championships
2. Most recent Grand Prix Final or Junior Grand Prix Final
3. Most recent World Junior Singles Camp
4. Most recent Grand Prix Series Competitions (six events)
5. Most recent Junior Grand Prix Series Competitions (seven events)
6. 2020 Youth Olympic Games (individual event)
7. Most recent World Junior Figure Skating Championships
8. Challenger Series Senior International Competitions during the current season
9. Previous season’s U.S. Figure Skating Championships
10. Other assigned ISU International Competitions during the current season
11. Most recent U.S. Novice & Junior Challenge Skate​

Audrey has good results from 2020 YOG and 2019 Nats. I hope USFS will give her a chance to show her stuff at selection camp.
