2021-2022 U.S. Men's Figure Skating

An 89 for Ilia seems a bit low, especially with a 37 in PCS. But he has not competed in Seniors a lot, so this is good experience for him.

That score would have earned a very solid 4th place at the last US Championship.

And that score includes a negative GOE on one of the jumping passes. It's a more than respectable score.

US Nats had some SP struggles last year. 89 is only 8 points more than Ilia's JGP score. He had scored a 98 at a US comp this year. But 89 with an error is still a good score, and he is only 16. I am very impressed by his progression.

I agree with @Tavi... Having watched Ilia's skate on Peacock, 37 in PCS was generous.

Ilia has many gifts and he is an impressive young skater, but this was not an 89 SP in my opinion. I attribute the score in part to the fact that Ilia was the "hometown hero" at this comp, being a native of of the Northern Virginia area where the comp was held.

Still, he is getting this faux Billie Jean program down cold, and I do like watching him. :)

I have not seen Ilia's SP from today -- so I have no opinion as to whether his score was generous or not.

But I am skeptical that geography skewed the Leesburg SP scoring in Ilia's favor.

Judge 5 and the Referee were from Ashburn, Virginia.
The five other judges were from Greenwich, CT; Pittsburgh, PA; Wilton, CT; Allentown, PA; and Williston, VT.
The three members of the tech panel were from Carrollton, TX; Coldwater, MI; and Stillwater, MN.

It was Judge 4 from Allentown, PA, who consistently gave Ilia the highest PCS.
Judge 5 from Virginia was alone in giving Ilia the very lowest score for Skating Skills.
For three other components, Judge 4 and Judge 5 gave Ilia identical scores, which were the highest scores for those components.

Judge 5 was alone in giving Ilia the very lowest GOE for his quad lutz, and the very highest GOE for his step sequence.
All other GOEs from Judge 5 were duplicated by other judges.

Well, when Judge 4 gets back to Allentown, we are going to have a conversation:laugh:.

ETA: And just in case anyone is inclined to take this seriously, I am joking about my own proximity to the city of Allentown. I do not know Judge 4, although I am always happy to talk about figure skating here in the Lehigh Valley. ;)

Did you see his skate? I actually thought his score was quite generous.
Yes I saw his skate. And he scored just 2 points higher than his JGP in PCS, while competing as a Senior. Ilia has improved a lot, so he got a good score. At least he is not breaking 40 in PCS, like some countries tend to do. I also said that 89 with an error is a good score. It was more of a comparison of how he had scored a 98 this season.

Unfortunately, I didn’t see the skate where he scored 98, so I can’t compare. Based only on how he skated here, I thought his PCS was okay. To me, his GOE was a little generous on some elements.

I believe it was a skate similar to this, but with landing the quad lutz. Ilia's Billie Jean is a great program for him, and he pulls it off very well. His FS is not as strong as his SP, but he has a big bunch of difficult jumps. Good luck to him in the FS.

Ilia just scored 183.90 in a clean free skate in Leesburg that included 4 quads (4Lz, 4T, 4S, 4Teu3S), 3A, 3A3T and a 3Lz3Lo combo. A bit of a jump drill but impressive nonetheless. His TES was 110.57.
A 110 is massive! A great score for Ilia.

With Skate Canada having ALL of my attention, I forgot about this event. Congratulations to Ilia, that's a nice big win. :cheer2:

I can see the protocols are up and his score was corrected to 184.35: https://ijs.usfigureskating.org/leaderboard/results/2021/30107/CAT021SEG037.html
Very interesting... after the short last night, I looked to see where his score would have put him at the most recent US Nationals... it was 4th.

This LP would have been 2nd, barely beating out Vincent and Yaro. The total score would have been 4th, less than three points behind Jason.

This total score would have been 2nd at Skate America, beating both Nathan and Shoma. This score would have won Finlandia.

I've been sort of "Yeah, you go Ilia. Shoot for the podium!" in a kind of offhand way, but I think he could actually be competitive at Nationals. So far in the young season, he seems to be the only guy putting together a reasonable effort at challenging the status quo of the Big Three.

Caveats: Different competitions, different seasons, different panels, varying degrees of pressure, etc etc etc. It is still impressive.

I think Ilia may very well be going for making this Olympics. I'm not saying he will make it, but if he improves his PCS, skates consistently with multiple quads, and does well in Senior comps nationally and internationally, he may be competing for the 3rd spot where Jason is currently.
