Dear Members. During the first day of competitions at the Olympics we have noticed that many posters are completely forgetting that these are competition threads, as for actual skaters competing. They are not threads to express with whom you have an axe to grind, to express your political opinions, your issues about doping allegations, any issues you may have with certain countries or people, your opinion about cheating or not, disparaging comments about people experiencing mental health issues, and/or any xenophobic or homophobic opinions you wish to express. Such posts are contrary to forum guidelines in general but are especially off putting in competition threads. Please focus on what is happening on the ice.

Posts which contain such sentiments derail the thread and take the joy out of taking part in these threads for other posters who join in to enjoy the experience of watching a Figure Skating competition with like minded posters. The moderators are free to delete all such posts without warning, and will do so if this continues.

There are a lot of interesting things that can happen based on Schizas/Zhu/Gutmann/Gubanova.

For example if Gubanova places 5th and Schizas is 6th (not entirely inconceivable), then Canada and Georgia tie (because they would have each acquired 7, 6, 5, 3 points from their 4 disciplines) and it comes down to the best total score of their best 3 disciplines.

Georgia's scores
M - 92.37 - 7 points
I - 64.60 - 3 points
P - 64.79 - 5 points
W - ?

Canada's scores
M -71.06 - 3 points
I - 82.72 - 7 points
P - 67.34 - 5 points
W - ?

The big showdown will be Schizas vs. Gubanova. Huuuge ask of Lara and Zhu to keep their countries from slipping out of the top 5.

In this case, wouldn't it come down to Tiebreaker 2 as opposed to Tiebreaker 3? That being said, I don't really understand tiebreaker 2.
  • Highest total team points from the two best places; if still tied, then:
  • Highest total segment scores of the current segment of the two best places according to team points; if still tied, then:
  • Highest total team points from the three best places; if still tied, then:
  • Highest total segment scores of the current segment of the three best places according to team points
  • If still tied, then a tie will actually happen and all tied teams qualify for the final

I would say that China is actually in a pretty good position right now. They have 5/6 points on Canada/Georgia, and would need to drop behind both to exit the top 5.

Italy would need Gutmann to skate better than she has in years to stay in the top 5.

If China comes in last in the women's short, there could be a four-way tie with Italy, Canada, and Georgia.

Example:
10 ROC
9 Japan
8 United States
7 Georgia
6 Canada
5 Ukraine
4 Italy
3 Czech Republic
2 Germany
1 China

1 ROC 36
2 United States 36
3 Japan 29
4. Georgia 22
5. Canada 22
6. China 22
7. Italy 22
8. Czech Republic 15
9. Ukraine 9
10. Germany 5

Alysa withdrew from US Nationals due to the crud. Because she lost valuable training time in recovery and the virus can show up in tests, she delayed her arrival in Beijing for the Women SP, and that meant no team event.

Agree with you and @CanadianSkaterGuy. This will be a very interesting session.

Before the Olympics began, I thought USA had an outside chance to win...

But a LOT of dominos would have to fall correctly. And you know what? So far, they have.

Still plenty of dominos left, but heading into the fourth of eight sections, this thing is by no means in the bag for Russia. Have to see where things stand afterwards.
