2024-25 U.S. Men's Figure Skating

Oh wow...BUt with the ladies they had lots of options. (Sarah, Bradie...) Back to focus on men. I am assuming and that is dangerous Jason must have done enough in light of Camdon mind you he is injured, Jimmy doing well at 4CC's and Max though I guess like Camdon this favours Jason as Max may need time still after all that he has gone through. Though sad circumstances Jason maybe US's best choice. I guess it would be nice to see one of his competitive programs and how he is really doing.

I think Jacob was a bit of a disappointment at juniors. I think you need to consider Camden, Max and Jimmy. But admittedly Camden needs to decide between career and work and Max is going through so much. Jimmy is fun but not consistent. However, if Jason doesn't have his triples solid he is not a sure thing and as we have seen in past nationals even it was close for him to get passed.
I can't see the US Men being so weak that a nearly 30 year old journeyman like Jimmy makes a Olympic team. Let's face it if the US men had the depth that they normally do Jimmy wouldn't really be a afterthought to make World or Olympic team especially at his age.

no other US man can seem to put together a clean short and free program consistently
Jimmy Ma is only 1.5 points behind Andrew in top ISU scores...

consistently?

Not even Jimmy himself would claim that. :)
The scores he posted this year are mostly consistent.
I have been watching to see how much he improved with a 2 quad, 2 3A layout.
Cranberry 236.77, Lombardia 229.41, Tallinn (one bad outing) 209.71, USNats 236.78, 4CC 245.01
Also national and international judges seem to be in the same range.

Comparing to his US peers...he should be in the mix
Broussard is the guy we need to watch for next year.
ISU CS Cranberry Cup International 2024
  • Broussard 246.48
  • Ma 236.77
  • Torgashev 224.94

What I am saying is that Jimmy is not an unreasonable choice and his alternate status is deserved. I respect the choice of USFS to pick Jason and list the alternates in order based on their criteria. I love Jason and hope the new boots do the trick for him and the US. It is USFS business and they are the experts. I just am irked when people diss Jimmy who had had a change in coaching training that has given him marked consistency this year. Internationally he has been more consistent than Camden and close enough to Andrew to deserve some respect. I feel that some fans have not processed the numbers I have documented above - this is a straight up numbers game for me. I love Jimmy - he is a great guy, but I want the fans to look at this rationally, hence the numbers.

whole post.

I would never dis Jimmy, I just don't remember a strong SP and LP together, other than 4CC.

Also, unless I missed something (which is entirely possible) did he move from his (relatively) longtime coaches Olga and Alex?

EETA:

I loved this heartfelt tribute from my favorite wild jumper, Alex Krasnozhon, to Jimmy after his 4CC skates. I still miss Alex

I think I misremembered - it was different training - not different coaching. I think someone's podcast was where he mentioned it. Wish I could find it, but alas I cannot.

Jason isn’t nervy so if he can skate a full program with 3As in front of a committee he is likely to deliver it at Worlds??? I do wonder if it’ll finish in the top 10 though. Doesn’t everyone else have quads?

If he falls and someone with low PCS with a quad also falls, will he beat them?
History shows that Jason can get a top ten finish with clean skates. Jason beat lots of skaters with quads at the 2024 and 2023 Worlds. In 2024, he was 5th overall with 274. In the free skate alone, he beat at least 14 skaters with quads. Some of these skaters attempted 3 or 4, but the most they had success with was 2 quads. Jason got 93 PCS and all positive GOEs in the free except for one small negative on a jump with a q.

In 2023, Jason also beat 14 men who did quads. One of these attempted 3 quads in the free skate, but the most done successfully was 2. Jason skated clean and had all positive GOEs in the free. His PCS (the highest of the event) was 95.84. His FS score was 185, and total score was 280.

Very good to hear, hopefully Lucas has recovered from the pelvis fracture and is up for a full competitive season.
I wondered about the injury, horrible; I was hoping he was on the mend ❤️‍🩹 . (A patient at a hospital where I worked had a similar injury and took a long time to heal; the horse she was riding reared and fell backwards on top of her😟)

That’s sad about the horse! I think that pelvic fractures may be worse than other injuries skaters get. Hope he doesn’t overdo it.

Jimmy had a much better season this year and made a coaching change. We’ll see how the early season goes this fall. He’s a phenomenal entertainer and with consistency and a couple of quads he’d be right in there. I wouldn’t be surprised if Camden drops off completely. He’s not going to give up his glitzy job on Wall Street to properly train.

I wouldn't count Jimmy out. TBH none of the other men besides Ilia and Jason have been consistent. And sadly, even Jason had some issues early on in the season.
I agree, Jimmy seems to have a lot of momentum right now (he will also get a media boost from his ties to the plane crash victims). At his age, he may not want to stick around after next season so let’s hope he does well.
