No surprise here! I still need more time with "Take Five" as I'm still stuck on their "Snake" and "Astronaut and Alien" routines :)

What are your thoughts on the Ice Dance event? What were your takeaways? Which are your favorite Rhythm and Free Dances?

I wish I could watch it! The free dance is missing on ISU YouTube, but from what I have seen in RD, it was pretty good and judging corresponded fairly well to just like/not like visual perception for me. That's said, Mrazkova/Mrazek weren't in this event, so I wasn't all-in invested.

Only one placement changed between RD and ID, but that's ID for you. I felt that the best one was on top, so that is ok. I liked 2, 3 and 4 equally, so I'm glad the technical panel and the judges could make the decision on those! Frenchies always have interesting Dances, both couples did. I felt the Japanese couples could have gotten more points, but who am I? And the Finnish were so good! So were the Germans, just a little missing. All-in-all a good event, although I tend to like a bit of a difference between to two parts of the competition.

You can watch individual videos from the free dance playlist found here

The problem must be with the warmup music in the full event video.

I swapped 3 & 4 as I was expecting a better skate from a healthier Green & Parsons to move them ahead of Allison & Saul this time. Kudos to the Lithuanians for recovering after last week’s disappointment with passion and sharpness to rebound to bronze. Nice to have Jen & Ben back and healthy. Congrats to Chock & Bates on a smooth, jazzy Take Five that continues to get better. Nice move up the ladder in both programs for CarPon.

The Finns have one of my favorite RD's this season, I love the fun, sassy energy.
Of course, loved all that is CarPon.
But I really think that Reed/Amb and their FD is going to give my current fave FD by Smart/Dieck a run for it's money. 🤔
ETA: I loved Demougeot/Le Mercier like always, especially their FD.

Evan and Maddie were fabulous. I loved seeing them skate to something that wasn't so esoteric with a story only they could appreciate. They were totally entertaining and looked like they were really enjoying themselves. Also nice to see Pon and Car finally coming into their own. And I always love Green and Parsons. Reed and Amb were a huge surprise to me. They definitely are a team to watch this year

Caroline Green and Michael Parsons created my favorite thing in figure skating ... they put me in a trance!

During their free skate, it was as if I were in an art museum, standing or sitting in front of a favorite painting or an acknowledged masterpiece ... I was totally absorbed, being in the presence of a work of art. It was as if I were present at a concert or a recital or in an individual's home while witnessing (and thus becoming a part of) their musical performance, whether piano, instrumental quartet or sextet, or a soulful duet.

Yes, that's it. Caroline and Michael created a soulful duet on ice. I could say it was about the smoothness of their skating and movement. Or the complete absorption they had, and their commitment to each other which was palpable. Or their control with slow music and moves. But it all adds up to more.

I love figure skating competitions because they bring out the best in the skaters (I care somewhat less about placements). But as Caroline and Michael skated, I was on the ice with them; I was in their performance, I was in the moment and I completely forgot where I was. When skaters can make me feel this way even though I'm not in the building with them, it's a testament to the power of art and the power of connection that we all have with one another.

As they ended their free dance, I suddenly became aware that I'd been transported to another place and time.

C/B - The RD is so much better and their midline section is one of my faves. Them and CPom do the best at actually channeling social dancing imo. Their FD is also fabulous.
CPom - Their programs this year are growing on me. I really like them, and I wish they had a better chance at GPF.
R/A - their RD is one of my faves based on flow. I also really like their FD. It is dynamic and they have some cool elements, but I'm still unsure on the tutu.
G/Pa - I do not understand the hype, and I feel like people are stuck in 2022. The RD was shaky, and they could've skated closer. The curved lift in the FD was spectacular, but the rest was a little snoozy. I'm just not impressed with MIDA.
D/LM - I like them, but the programs from last year were more memorable.
O/P - I would give them the world if they asked. So fun!
VR/S - Their lifts are cool, but the in-between could be stronger.
D/N - they're very french but not my type of french. They are well matched though and I like their lines.
Y/M - a good R&J just really hits
T/N - They were cute, good for Japan on picking up the Ice Dance discipline

The top four were all solid in the RD with only minor mistakes. In the FD two teams stood out to me: C/B and G/P. I loved C/B's program and their whole jazzy vibe, which was sublime and very well skated. G/P had me mesmerized from the start with the most emotive and artistic FD I've seen this year. Yes, Green Parsons are back! and Skylark's post above has it right, this FD is a work of art. The musicality, artistry and skating skills of this team truly stand out and I think G/P should be getting a lot MORE hype (and respect from judging panels) than they have so far. I would have had them in 2nd in this FD for example. I like the other two teams as well. C/P and R/A put in solid performances in the FD. Both were enjoyable to watch but nothing memorable or inspiring. I'd like to see more genuine expression and originality from these teams. There are enough cookie-cutter programs out there.

I was a bit "meh" on both of Chock/Bates programs at Skate America.

I'm becoming a big fan of the RD now, and Take Five is (slowly) growing on me.

I think the RD Mashup hits the theme of social dances better than anyone else, and Take Five is something I haven't seen before. It's subtle, and I can acknowledge that, but I'm more of an "in your face" kind of guy.

C/P have taken me on a career journey. I was an early fan, then leveled off, then bottomed out. And now they're slowly bringing me back.

Chock and Bates do what Chock and BAtes do - they get better and stronger each weeks and they are the darlings. Carreira and Ponomarenko are good but I much prefer HB as the second american team but life goes on. It seems like the judges have slotted them as the team moving up. Now I am curious who will win between them and LaLa? I was thinking LaLa and CP could move ahead of Gibson and Fear at the end of the last season but now it seems that GF are battlilng for a medal with last year's podium. I think Lithuania is not a bad team; just not spectacular. They had their moment last year at euros but it seems like there are several teams ready to pass them.

All the way through this was of a very high standard.
But Chock and Bates were clearly in a different league here, if they'd made the SKAM mistake in this field they would've gotten away with it.
Carreira and Ponomarenko- personally don't think they show much chemistry, but they look like they're trying to put more effort into that. But they're a strong team in many ways and I get why they were second.

Green and Parsons were great, but obviously still building back towards their previous form. But they're a team that has built up to success when it really matters later in the season so you can't rule them out.
I dont think its very easy to predict who'll be the second and third American teams after Chock and Bates, there's so many good teams (and new ones popping up every season), all around a similar level, with varying trajectories over a season, so who knows what'll happen at Nationals.
