I am happy for Kalaganis/ Deveau. They have improved a lot. They are a bit older. They deserve the experience. For ice dance, at least, the strategy is clear. The top three teams get two = 6 spots. The other 3 spots are split between Auréa-Earl, the Carandiucs and Olympia and Émile. Total = 9 spots.
For pairs, the top 3 teams also get two outings. The rest... only one. Forfeiting spots is not cool
Men : with only 5 spots... and Grayson's surprise silver when Skate Canada probably counted on David Bondar more, it looks like it will be 2 guys getting two and 1 guy (Anthony) getting one. I cannot say I am super thrilled with this. Eddy won silver at Nationals and was 2nd also at Next Gen. Sure, he is inconsistent but that's because he is also the only one trying to include two different quads and two triple axels in his LP. If I were Skate Canada, I would give him at least a JGP and a Junior B so he gets more opportunities to gain experience and confidence. Not only he is working on the TES side of things but he has great basic and flair ... so technically, he could help Canada secure more sports for next year JGP. Yes, he is my GS "son" so I am biased but I think that Skate Canada is making a mistake here.
Women : Reese has had a lot of opportunities and she is a great SP skater. When it comes to the LP, she often struggles. I would have not announced her assignment and would have waited for Victoria's result. At the same time, with the stacked field, Victoria's chances to medal are not as good as it may have been in another event. But then again, if we want to create more opportunities for our skaters, they need to do well at worlds... and to me, Victoria is the front leader in that sense. So, she should be getting more outings.
