2025-2026 Canadian Figure Skating

Had hopes for Gabby after the Ice Challenge... but after watching her mail it in as SC Challenge, I've seen that movie before, I'm no longer interested in seeing her at major internationals.

All things being equal, or even remotely close, I imagine Maddie gets the spot. Sara-Maude would need to win by a big margin, and landing the 3A would help, to get the nod IMO.

Sure hope Kwon can put a badly needed charge back into the women's division

I agree.

The spot is basically Maddie’s to lose, unless SMD skates lights out and lands the 3A and wins convincingly.

Gabby was disappointed with her Challenge result despite winning. I think she knew it was a missed opportunity. Skate Canada bases the Olympic spots from results over the past two years. I don’t believe her 181 Ice Challenge win is enough to even put her in the conversation anymore. Maddie has too big of a resume and she almost sealed the deal with that 188 skate at Finlandia.

To me, it is Maddie with SMD having an outside opportunity. SMD was phenomenal with her her 185 Warsaw win. She has a 3A. That jump could come in handy. It is just sad that SMD could have scored 190+ at Warsaw with a well thought out, jump layout. If SMD puts a similar Warsaw performance at Nationals and makes sure she adds 2A and maybe a 2A 3T combo, she could win and be selected due to her upwards trajectory.

Anyone know how much the Lion King rights are? I've heard a lot about music not clearing, rights being expensive, etc.

Are they the same thing? I.e, is it that the Black Swan is just too expensive to pay for? Or is it a case of it being impossible to get approval at all? Same question for lion king.

If it is a case of her having access to the Lion King but having to pay more than she wants - what number are we talking about? $1,000 to skate to it at the Olympics? 2000? 10,000? What is it?
It depends.

AnythingGOE had a good article discussing some of the ins and out of music licensing.

Much music falls under existing licensing agreements (SOCAN in Canada, BMI and/or ASCAP in the US, etc) and can be basically be used freely by skaters (overall fees are paid by buildings and federations, and allocated to artists and rights holders indirectly)... but music outside those licensing agreements are a different ballgame and the rights holders can call the shots as they see fit (and sue if it's used without their permission)

I think the short will play a big part for selection since whichever woman goes will have to do the short in the team event. That's where they need to nail it.

Right now, we don't know what short program Maddie will have for Nationals since she wasn't able to clear Black Swan and may not want to pay for the rights for the Lion King. She could be competing a completely new short for Nationals. If it doesn't go well, that could take her out of the Olympics.
So she's been competing all season without the music rights?

I think without music rights for the Olympics, like the situation Lauriault/Le Gac have with their RD (I don't even know if they resolved that 😕) I don't know the specifics, it's a mess.

I guess i am outsider. I think they could (,have a shot at) bronze in individual event.
Yes it will be difficult. With the more seemingly locks at medals between Chock and Bates, Guignard and Fabbri, Fourney Beaudry and Cizeron.

Anything can happen.
They can sneak in like Fear and Gibson.

Foe me at olympic it those 5 in top 5. All havr chance at medals . But more likely U.S, France, Italy

Not really about Canadian skating, but Donovan does mention the country in a very warm manner.

I think the bronze for the Olympics is between Piper/Paul and Guignard/Fabbri. The latter have home advantage, but the judges don't seem to be going with them this season. I expect Lilah and Lewis to drop back down below P/P and G/F after our home Euros.

For me I thought Gabby Daleman retired and didn't skate more or much. Just maybe locally to show or keep up.
She had lousy luck in the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons. Both times her season ended at the Skate Ontario August competitions due to injury, so that was why she didn't compete much.

She never mentioned retirement, but was constantly injured with freak accidents, including a car crash. To think that she participated at the 2014 Olympics, won a world medal in 2017 iirc, won the gold medal at the Olympics in 2018 In the team event with a spectacular performance, and is in the conversation for 2026 is amazing. It shows how much she loves her sport and how hard she worked. I believe she couldn't even walk at some point and had to relearn everything. I'm very impressed with her perseverance and dedication. Since she was injured for the last couple years, she hasn't completed until the fall. She's shown steady progress and even improved : adding a 3lz-3t combo while in past years, she's always used the 3t3t combo. She still has incredible speed, power, ice coverage and flair. If the games were in a year from now, even six months from now, I'd rate her chances much higher. However, with the way things are, though she may be a favorite for the podium, it seems hard to believe she would be chosen over Maddie or Sara-Maude.

I kind of feel for Michael Slipchuk -high performance director. Of course you have to pump Canadian Nationals but they are limping to the olympics. Honestly I so hope for Max and Deanna and Piper and Paul but both look resigned to being off the olympic podium and in the team event Canada might not even make the final five teams it is that bad. Max and Deanna have not managed to skate cleanly and they need too with no huge tricks. Meanwhile Piper and Paul at no fault of their own have clearly been dropped by the world. Its too late to change their free or RD now I guess. THey seem resigned to fourth I do hope they can mentally continue on to worlds and win a medal there. But I am fearful they will just give up and drop out after the olympics with broken dreams and hearts. While it might be a wake up if Gabby somehow won Nats or if Gogo or Roman do really well it just seems like a flat year or flatline. It has been a while since Canada had a solid lady man really. Keegan looks hardly ready. Yes Gogo and Roman have show some spark but then they let us down. Lia and Trennt showed promise in 2022 but they too have fallen down the wayside. Ironically Lala has shown proise but it seems they got stopped by the US "second" team who seems to get the pump over them and then adding the new French team seems o have derailed Canada dance (both teams 1 and 2) Canada most likely will not win a medal at the olympics. Piper and Paul Canada's best chance really need to pull out of Nats and go to 4CC. They will not skate in the final group because the pesky Lithuanians will get the final group over them if the go to Euros.

The main failure these past years with Canadian skating was not to manage to get the bronze medal of the team event. Maybe it was never going to happen but that's my only problem in terms of leadership.

The other problem is that our athletes do not get out. But is that leadership or money ? I don't know.

I came here for another reason though : come support our juniors : they are starting tomorrow. Livestream will be free and available for all on Dailymotion.

Please visit the sub-section of the forum.

For juniors : threads have been made by discipline. Short and Long programs will be discussed in the same thread. Enjoy !

The odd thing about money is, Skate Canada is sitting on a ton of money. They literally have more than ever. They have over $36M in reserves and it just keeps climbing (during the 2010's they typically carried between $20-22M)

As much as they have a lot of empty seats at events and worsening sponsorships (and both those things are true)... they've still made an absolute killing just from their investments. And the truth is, they've always lost money on operations and used their investment income to offset that.

For example, during the 2014-2018 golden generation run, they actually lost $7.9M on operations over those five years... but made back $7.5M on investments and other gains to offset it

Whereas the last five years 2021-2025, they actually broke even on operations (made $0.1M)... while banking over $13M on investments!!!

Even if you take the effect of hosting Worlds out of it (about a $3.5M profit), they've still banked around $10M in that period.

Truth is, Skate Canada is anything but broke, they are sitting on a mountain of money... they've just been being super cheap

Looking at the report, 20 million of it was transferred from unrestricted funds to internally restricted.

I wouldn't call it being cheap since having enough money in reserve for cases where events are cancelled or longer term projects. It probably took a big hit after 2020 and needed to be topped up. Plus the funds being tied up in investments wouldn't make them easy to spend.
