2025-2026 Canadian Figure Skating

I heard that in the future (2030?) the IOC plans to move the Olympics into January because of climate change. This means that the "European Championship" advantage in Olympic years would be eliminated. But it would be also a big adjustment for the Cdn and USA nationals timing.

The ISU is already looking at changing the calendar so that 4CC/Europeans would be in March at the same time and the federations would be having their nationals in February. There's a proposed timeline in this post:

I don't like having Europeans/4CC at the same time though, too much skating at once for me. I'm for having some Challengers in February though, give skaters who break out at Challenge/Nationals a chance to get an SB if they weren't able to get an assignment in the fall.

Thank you! I will need to read that thread. I wasn't sure how "real" the proposed changes were. Having Europeans and 4CC at the same time might also be hard for some coaching teams. I know that it was used to be an issue for having Cdns and US Championships overlap but not sure if that is still the case.

I am fine with Euros and 4CC at the same time..because they won't be at the same time. With the different time zones it just means that there would be something I am able to watch live... sometimes a bit of skating in the morning from Euros (morning in my time zone) or from late night from 4CC...

The rest, I would have to watch on archives anyways... so no biggies. I like the proposed schedules for a lot of reasons, including the possibility of post XMAS challengers. I bet this would improve assignments for our skaters.

Let's hope this all works out. For once, there is some logic about an ISU reform :)

Just like with Stephen, it is nice to see the judges award Lea and Trennt for what they put out. Beautiful skating. PCS is creeping up (should have been higher than Georgia though).

Tomorrow, it seems inevitable they will drop back if the big guns actually deliver (although anything can happen), but I hope they put out a great programme no matter the placement. This sets them up well for a good worlds placement - which is so important for developing our younger pairs. So gutted for Deanna and Max with such a fluke fall. Let us hope they do a free skate they can be proud of. I wonder if they will go to worlds. Hope they can and do a redemption short.

Certainly our skaters have stepped up these games - performing (mostly) above expectations and that is so lovely for everybody including fans (us).

I agree Cutting the Ice - our skaters have gone so much better then expected so far at these games. I mean really before the games started who would have thought Stephen would be 2nd in Free and 5th overall. And who would have put a CAN Pairs in the top 3 after the short. Most people were even thinking Deanna and Max would be 5th at best. And in the Team event had the Judges marked correctly CAN really had a shot at the Bronze, where most people did not even think they would make it to the Free Skates. Now lets hope Lia and Trennt lay down a great free skate. I do not expect them to even stay in the top 5 but close behind would be nice. Think skating in the Team event helped them... they sort of worked the nerves and bugs out there. Lia even alluded to that in the interview after their skate.

Trennt looked like a scared puppy when they go on the ice.. but then, after a few steps, he was on. That's the experience of competition. You cannot get that in training... you need to train that in competition.

I hope that Skate Canada takes notice.

I am so happy for Lia and Trennt...it's like their promise in their first year together is now coming to fruition. It doesn't matter that the 3rd place probably won't remain, and will become 5th or whatever. Just remembering that Trennt didn't go to Olympics (with Eveline) last time. And now this success. Never mind it might be temporary.

They had success in the Team Event as well, just as Stephen did.

This is just such a joy. it seems to be a great Olympics for the Canadian athletes!

pretty shocking Deanna and max. They haven’t really had a clean performance all season so to me the programs never really took proper shape. I feel really bad for them. Trennt and Lia did great. I have to say I didn’t like the sp music. I Thought it was too slow but when the program is skated well it erases the flaws

I watched the interview again... gosh... Max is on the verge of imploding in tears. I just want to hug them and protect them so much for the LP.

This is heartbreaking. After all the adversity, to get there, manage the jumps without too much damage, land a good throw... and the lift was pretty much done.... I debated internally about this fall being on the element or after. It's a bit tricky and I think it could have gone either way... or needed maybe half a second more on the exit to show it was done... I don't know.. I am okay with the call... it is just absurd considering they are one of the best teams in the world on lifts.

The judges seem to have done a weird halfway thing with it. Although the element shows an F on the protocol, they have not given the element a -5 on the GOE from each judge, which they are supposed to do for a fall on an element.

Yes, the slow-mo replay which was shown on Discovery+ showed their blades touching.

I am glad that they will still do the free. I was a little bit concerned that Deanna might be pulled on medical grounds.

I am never too sure about falls on lift exits... Just before it happened, the GOE was HUGE... so perhaps judges applied a minus five to their +3 or whatever they had for them. A lift, unlike a jump or a throw lasts for several seconds. So I am guessing it's not an automatic minus 5. I have seen other examples of that happening with other pairs.

In some ways, now that there is absolutely no pressure, maybe they can just skate and have fun. A redemption skate would be fabulous for them. They have had such a hard season. It's difficult to imagine them continuing after this... but I hope they go to Worlds and I cling desperately to the very tiny hope that they could keep going... Max said no but he may change his mind ;). Deanna had said she wanted to continue... I mean who would be at her level at this point.. hard to tell.

Deanna and Max result here reminded me of Barb and Paul at the 1984 Olympics. They were going in as medal treats and even possible Gold Medal. Yet they had a major error in the short program and ended up 7th. Even in the Free skate the short program result haunted them. But they came back and won worlds that year.

A short interview with Dylan Moscovitch about his Olympic experience. I believe this was from last weekend. There was a fan fest event in downtown Toronto (it was a bitterly cold weekend for it!). I believe Elvis Stojko was there on one of the days as well.

Disappointed Lia and trennt couldnt do a clean performance to place better. I didn’t expect a podium I feel they seem so lovely as people and performers but lack that killer extinct. Oh well, as for Deanna and max i think they just kind of flamed out (at the wrong time) They kind of got a bit too hyped, not quite like Ilya Malinin, but if I have to hear about her age one more time…..!

This was interesting. Unless I blinked, I didn't see any photos of Dylan with Kirsten; they were all of him and Lubov. Yet he went to the Olympics and won a team silver medal with Kirsten, not Lubov.
