2025-2026 Canadian Figure Skating

And while we are wishing on stars, why not have more accessible isu competitions in North America? Have a pairs and ice dance in Montreal and a singles in Ontario. And possible in BC. Have it not in the summer but sometime in the autumn. Lots of choices for timing. We have lots of international teams training in Canada and USA that could attend. What is s stupid is that to get international points , our skaters must go to Europe.
that's what was called Autumn Classic International. I went several times... last time, stars like world champions Ilia Malinin, Kaori Sakamoto and Riku Ryu were in the line up... but no.. it's gone and done.

What's sad about this is that it was an event that was held for several years already. This means that the infrastructure and expertise is there already. It may not be perfect (the food sucked LOL) but now, if they were do to another event, they would need to find new staff and volunteers. Why not just keep what was there in the first place ?

And at the Autumn Classic Canadians did quite well and were able to earn world points and rankings.

Why is it "gone and done"? Is that a Skate Canada decision or was it the LOC who were unable to keep it up? Is it a cost issue? Perhaps ice availability?

As has been mentioned here in the past, it is very expensive to send a skater to Europe. Why not direct some of that money domestically instead to financially assist in putting on an ISU competition. As mentioned, wishing on stars here but feels good (just a little bit) to complain. I feel badly for the skaters but with Skate Canada's management of international opportunities for competition, it isn't a surprise to see the decline of our international results - and reputation with the judges.

all I know is that it used to alternate with the US challenger in the fall and the last few years, after Montreal worlds, it hasn't come back. I don't think it has to do with the venue because, if most times, it was in Pierrefonds (on Montreal Island) it also been held in Ontario). Everyone thought it was a question of Skate Canada not having enough money but we never got real news about it.

Yiup. Everything about hosting a challenger in Canada makes sense. Not only that but there is an unlimited number of skaters at home challengers for the hosting Nation. Considering the number of women that are emerging right now, it would be a great thing to have a challenger in Quebec or Ontario.

Worlds Team, Laurin/Ethier are in and Deanna/Max are out. Otherwise the same as the Olympics.

I think it should be clear Deanna and Max wanted to go but they were pushing their luck. Deanna barely if not questionably manged to convince the medical professionals let her compete olympics but she need to heal. I hope they continue for one more year.

I would love that too (Deanna in lifts is such a joy to watch, sorry let me get that right: when it works they both are an absolute joy to watch), but it seems Max has already found a new job (I read somewhere about that. I don't know if it can be shared with a full-time career as a figureskater).

He has been added to the coaching staff at a club in the Montreal area. But it said nowhere he'll coach full-time. And as others have pointed out, he has been coaching for years now and still was skating with Deanna. I guess we'll have to wait for an official announcement. Right now everything is just people assuming they're done because of this.

And yes, obviously I'd love them to continue for a bit longer too. And also yes, Max has said that he wants to retire, but that was last year. When he was asked at the Olympics he said he's not sure. That could have either been him not wanting to say anything about this topic at this point, but it could also be that he really is not. I think he and Deanna have a bit of talking to do about this if they haven't done that already - because I have a feeling that Deanna is not done.

That woman! Who can't love her? I definitely do.

Realistically, I don't think Deanna can continue unless Max does. There aren't any available male partners in Canada who are at the right level and, even if there were, it takes time for a new partnership to gel. Changing feds is not an option because she would need to take a year out of international competition (unless she found someone who was willing to switch and hadn't competed for a year - and then they probably wouldn't be ready to compete to her level immediately).

I agree. It's Max or nothing. So it's up to her to convince him :)

Guess what ? If anyone can be convincing, I'd bet a loonie on Deanna.

Yesterday, I popped by Skate Oakville to see who might be on the ice. It was quite quiet, only a few skaters. I noticed Martina Ario Kent’s new partner seemed to be working elements with a different partner while Martina skated alone, practicing jumps. I don’t like to post rumors but last night I saw a post by Meagan Duhamel that she was looking for a partner.

I didn't even know Martina had a new partner... :)

We discussed her and her new partner last fall on this page. He was identified as Flavian Giniaux of France. In any case, they are apparently no longer a pair team. He was also on the ice, with a different girl.
Sounds like a storyline in a soap opera :drama:

Right. I can't keep track
