2025-26 British and Irish figure skating

That's a pity, after years of being spoiled with unlimited coverage of the Olympics, I watched the Paris Olympics and it wasn't quite as good, they were constantly switching between sports and chatting in the studio. Be interesting to see how much figure skating the BBC can show, if they have the awful women co-commentating I won't be watching any of it, they she allow you to watch with or without commentary.

I just noticed that there is an guest skater competing in Advanced Novices at the Bulgarian Championships today and tomorrow - Eleanor PATTEN (GBR).

I take it this is Leilah's sister.

Yep. Just found her Instagram profile, and she is the image of Leilah! I couldn't tell them apart! 😲

Eleanor (whose name has gone through a double transliteration to become "Elinor" on the Entries / Results page) will be kicking off proceedings today, as the first skater in Group 1 of the Klas III (Advanced Novice) Ladies SP.

The Group 1 Warm-Up is due to start at 17:15:00 EET (15:15:00 GMT).

Eleanor is due to start at 17:19:30 EET (15:19:30 GMT).

Hmm. I'd assumed, when she didn't participate at Nationals, that Leilah was still injured. Is she transitioning back to Bulgaria? She's had almost a year out now.

Hmm. I'd assumed, when she didn't participate at Nationals, that Leilah was still injured. Is she transitioning back to Bulgaria? She's had almost a year out now.

It is just Eleanor that is competing in Bulgarian Nationals this week. Leilah isn't.

But what you have said strikes a chord with me, because it appears that that is exactly what is happening with one of my kids. Varvara Abramkina (CYP) pulled out of her Junior GP assignments, and hasn't been in any other competitions so far this season. I naturally assumed she was injured.

Ever since she left Russia, Varvara has trained at the Denkova-Staviski club, and has always done the Bulgarian Championships as a guest skater. So I was not surprised when she re-emerged at the Winter Sports Palace this week. But I was shocked to find that she is in as a full entry, with "BUL" beside her name.

Not only that, but she is leading Junior Ladies after the SP by a country mile!

Varvara's last competition was the Black Sea Ice Cup at the start of April, so she wouldn't be eligible for Bulgaria at Junior Worlds this year. But, as you pointed out, it is nearly a year that Leilah has been out. Her last competition was the EYOF at the start of February. So, she would be eligible for Bulgaria by the time Junior Worlds came around. If Leilah was going back to Bulgaria, you would have thought she would have been at Nationals this week, to stake her claim on the Junior Worlds slot.

Just bringing it back to Eleanor, she scored 29.21 in the SP, which would have put her in 9th position out of 15 in the full Advanced Novice competition.

I watched her back on the archived livestream, and she is so like Leilah that it is freaky. I wonder what the age difference is. It can't be much. (Were it not for the fact that Eleanor's Instagram profile says "Account managed by big sister", I would have wondered if they were twins!) She had a fall on her opening Triple Salchow, and nearly had another getting into her finishing position, but otherwise was really good.

Eleanor will again be kicking off the competitive action today, as the first skater in Group 1 of the Klas III (Advanced Novice) Ladies FS.

The Group 1 Warm-Up is due to start at 16:30:00 EET (14:30:00 GMT). So 8 hours from now.

Eleanor is due to start at 16:35:30 EET (14:35:30 GMT). So 8h 35m from now.

Before I get to what I wanted to post about, I should tie up the loose end I left.

At the Bulgarian Championships, Eleanor PATTEN (GBR) scored 52.01 in the FS, which would have put her in 9th position out of 15 in the full Advanced Novice competition. She scored 81.22 overall, which would have put her in 9th position out of 15 in the full Advanced Novice competition.

Well, you can't say she's not consistent!

Anyway, back to the present. There is an hour-long programme on ITV tonight about Jayne Torvill / Christopher Dean's farewell tour. It starts at 20:30 GMT, so 12 hours from now.

🇬🇧 ITV (All times GMT)

Sunday 28th December 2025
ITV1 20:30 – 21:30 "Torvill And Dean: The Last Dance"

Also, there are reports that they are going to be further recognised in the New Year Honours List, with Jayne getting a Damehood, and Chris a Knighthood!

https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/3774...opher-dean-damehood-knighthood-kings-honours/
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowb...ew-Year-Honours-five-decades-ice-skating.html

They got MBE's in the 1981 Birthday Honours after winning the British Championships, European Championships, and Senior World Championships that year; and OBE's in the 2000 New Year Honours.

Their coach, Janet Sawbridge, had previously got an MBE in the 1974 Birthday Honours list at the end of her competitive career.

And their costume designer, Courtney Jones, got an MBE in the 1980 Birthday Honours, and an OBE in the 1989 Birthday Honours. With two different partners (June Markham and Doreen Denny), he had won the British Championships from 1957 to 1961; the European Championships in 1957 and 1961; and the Senior World Championships from 1957 to 1960.

Here are some more Ice Dancers who have received honours (apologies if I have missed anybody):

Diane Towler / Bernard Ford got MBE's in the 1969 Birthday Honours after winning their fourth consecutive British Championships, European Championships, and Senior World Championships.

Joan Slater (née Dewhirst) got an MBE in the 2007 Birthday Honours. She and her by then late husband John Slater had won the British Championships from 1951 to 1953, and were Silver Medallists in the 1952 and 1953 Senior World Championships.

Lawrence Demmy got an MBE in the 1984 New Year Honours List. With Jean Westwood, he had won the British Championships in 1954 and 1955; the European Championships in 1954 and 1955; and the Senior World Championships from 1951 to 1955.

I hope the reports about Jayne and Chris are true!

Silly question maybe, but what is the difference between an MBE and a Dame-/Knighthood? I realise it will be a higher honour but I always thought an MBE already made you a sir/lady?

The MBE is just the first rung on the honours ladder. The Damehood / Knighthood is a few steps higher:

  1. MBE (Member Of The Order Of The British Empire)
  2. OBE (Officer Of The Order Of The British Empire)
  3. CBE (Commander Of The Order Of The British Empire)
  4. DBE (Dame Commander Of The Order Of The British Empire) / KBE (Knight Commander Of The Order Of The British Empire)
  5. GBE (Dame / Knight Grand Cross Of The Order Of The British Empire)

Jayne and Chris have already got steps 1 and 2. They are now skipping step 3, and going straight to step 4.

With each step, you get to add sets of letters to the end of your name. But it is only when you reach step 4 that you can use the titles Dame / Sir before your name.

Hope this clears things up.

I would just like to add: I don't like this step skipping.

The most common step to be skipped is the CBE (which is what is happening with Jayne and Chris). But some people come straight in at OBE (skipping the MBE), or even straight in at Damehood / Knighthood (skipping MBE, OBE and CBE).

Maybe it is just me, but I would feel cheated if I was on the honours ladder, but steps were being skipped along the way. Because surely the aim is not just to get a big honour with the fancy title, but to get the full set of honours.

Apart from anything else, it means that your achievements have been recognised more times.

It's European Championships week!!! :cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

And because it is Monday, the Sky EPG now has the TV listings for all of the week.

Thank goodness for the ISU YouTube channel, because the BBC are only showing half of the competitions. 😞

Yes, I know that I am disappointed every season with the amount of coverage that the BBC provides of figure skating. But, I am especially disappointed with the amount of coverage they are giving us of the European Championships this year, considering that we are hosting the thing!

On the plus side, there is LIVE coverage of the Pairs FS, Ladies FS and both of the Ice Dance competitions. And for a change, they are showing the entire competitions, rather than joining after the first resurfacing like they normally do.

HOWEVER, there is no coverage at all of the Pairs SP, Ladies SP, or either of the Men’s competitions.

Why is the Men’s FS not being shown? Because the London Masters snooker tournament is also on this week. Or, rather, because the BBC have this weird obsession that whenever they show snooker tournaments, the Saturday afternoon sessions have to be shown on BBC1 rather than the channel that shows every other session of the tournament, BBC2.

This in turn means that the football magazine programme Final Score that normally gets shown on BBC1 on Saturday afternoons gets bumped down to Red Button 1. Which means that there is no room at the inn for the Men’s FS.

Except, there is room at the inn. BBC2 is showing a film from 1958 and a repeat of an episode of a documentary series from 2023. They could easily be shown some other time.

There is nothing to stop them keeping the snooker on BBC2, keeping the football on BBC1, and putting the Men’s FS on Red Button 1!

The weirdest bit of it all is that at 16:30, even if it is in the middle of a frame, the snooker switches over to BBC2 so that the last hour of Final Score can be shown on BBC1. Why not just have both of them on their regular channels to start with, and then there would be no need for both of them to switch channels at 16:30?!

Ach!

The i-player and BBC Sport Website/App will be streaming the Men's Free as well as all of the Red Button coverage you listed

I am assuming as there is the highlights show on Sunday that the BBC will be using their commentators rather than the ISU feed.

Anyway glad to say that I'll be travelling to Sheffield later to watch in person.

I do hope you're right about the Men's FS. But, I'm not going to hold my breath, just in case.

Here is the page for the BBC's coverage:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m002q97w

I really wish the BBC Sport website would bring back the page where they listed upcoming live sport that they are streaming. Because, although the links didn't get added until the day the stream was happening, it still made life a lot easier.

At least with the North West 200 motorbike racing event over here, the links are put up on the BBC Sport NI Facebook page an hour or so before the streams come on air. But, I don't know if there is somewhere that would do similar for the European Championships (the BBC Yorkshire Facebook page maybe?)

The BBC website really isn't as user friendly as it used to be.

Hey, here's a story I found while hunting around the BBC website that might give you an idea of something to do when not in the arena:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cgjw8n1wdqpo

Hope you enjoy yourself in Sheffield.

I confess that I have always liked watching snooker. But, billiards is rather a mystery to me. All I know is that there are no pockets on the table in billiards. It strikes me as a game where matches could go on forever if you are just hitting balls around the table, rather than trying to pot them in the pockets. I really can't imagine how scoring would work in it. But, I've never been interested enough to look it up.

It's a shame that snooker is only a niche sport, because Canada has had some pretty good players in the past:

1980 World Champion Cliff Thorburn from Victoria (BC)
1983 Snooker Classic runner up Bill Werbeniuk from Winnipeg (MB)
1985 British Open runner-up Kirk Stevens from Toronto (ON)
1996 German Open runner-up Alain Robidoux from Saint-Jérôme (QC)
2007 Grand Prix Champion Marco Fu (HKG) grew up in Vancouver (BC)

But, hey, being a niche sport isn't all that bad. Sure, figure skating is a niche sport! ;)

The potted description I saw on Google said something about "in spite of the successes of......" and named all those people. Made me think of race walking, which has to be one of the niche-ist sports going. Living in Richmond, BC, on nice weather days I frequently get to see current world champion and past Olympic medallist (and lifelong Richmond resident) Evan Dunfee barreling along in his daily training. But even during the summer Olympics, they might show a few stretches of a race on TV, but otherwise who outside our local news area even hears about the sport.

A nice piece of coverage on BBC breakfast this morning coming live from rinkside in Sheffield.

A video piece on Kristen Spours and John Healy (has he an Irish link) performance director of GB skating and 3 time Olympian.

That reminds me - a few days ago, I got up and put the TV on at about 05:50, and was surprised to see Kristen Spours on BBC1 (well, it was actually the overnight simulcast of the BBC News Channel). But, it was the tail end of the report, and I forgot to go onto iPlayer to get the whole thing. :bang: (Oh, how I hate the way that news programmes only stay up for 24 hours!)

Right, thank you for the heads up. I'll go onto iPlayer now and watch it before it disappears. (You never know, it might turn out to be the same video piece that I missed a few days ago!)

It's well seeing that there is an Olympics coming up, as all of a sudden the BBC are running a whole pile of winter sports stories. Normally, winter sports stories are few and far between, and only if they involve a British athlete winning something. But they even had a story at the weekend about the National Championships in America! 😲 Yes, it was only talking about Maxim Naumov, but it's still something! ;)

Thank you again!

:thank:

Expires: 09:29 GMT Wednesday 14th January 2026

Here are the times where you can find the bits about the skating in the video.

1m 13s to 1m 26s (Clock time - 06:01 GMT to 06:01 GMT): Introduction in Headlines

38m 45s to 45m 35s (Clock time - 06:38 GMT to 06:45 GMT): With Molly Lanaghan and Mohammed Mahroof
[Other sports news, but nothing to see in background during links between clips]
48m 47s to 49m 29s (Clock time - 06:48 GMT to 06:49 GMT)

1h 1m 47s to 1h 2m 1s (Clock time - 07:01 GMT to 07:01 GMT): Introduction in Headlines [reporter got cut off mid sentence!]

1h 44m 54s to 1h 49m 12s (Clock time - 07:44 GMT to 07:49 GMT): With Ed Appleby
[Other sports news, but you can see Men's Practice in background during links between clips]
1h 52m 15s to 1h 53m 02s (Clock time - 07:52 GMT to 07:53 GMT)

2h 2m 7s to 2h 2m 23s (Clock time - 08:02 GMT to 08:02 GMT): Introduction in Headlines [Men's Practice in background]

2h 51m 31s to 2h 59m 25s (Clock time - 08:51 GMT to 08:59 GMT): With John Eley

What on Earth has happened to Molly's accent?! It's pure Canadian now! Listening to her, you wouldn't know she was a local Yorkshire lass!

Also saw Jenny Bill sitting in the stands making notes. Wouldn't it be great if she was commentating for the BBC instead of Kat Downes? (I assume since it is an ISU event that PJ Kwong will be doing the rinkside announcing).

All in all, it was good to see a flagship BBC programme heavily featuring the European Championships in Sheffield. But, there was far too much talk about the Olympics and not enough talk about the event that they were actually at.

Was that supposed to be a piece about Euros, or one about the Olympics?

I would love to see full videos of Kristen's childhood programmes.

The tiles are up on the ISU youtube page. I'd been a little bit nervous that it might be geoblocked with the BBC showing some of the events. I'm glad it isn't.

Thanks for all the details about where to see the newsclips!

I think that Mark Hanretty is doing the rinkside announcing, and Chris and Tonia are doing the commentary.
