Some notes - Pairs is pretty stacked, particularly in terms of mid-level teams.

Both in pairs and ice dance, some lack of alternates are making me do a double take - No Italian alternate in pairs, no Japanese or Taiwanese alternates in Ice Dance, despite them having had at least a second team last season. Particularly, Polman/Renoldi's absence is concerning, after they were already withdrawn from the first (?) JGP.

In women, of course, the debut of Vika Barakhtina. Also, Shuxian, Maria Eliise, Stefania, Ariel, Mao and Yo, Kira and Emilia. Stacked. Marie Bierwert will make her JGP debut for the UAE, as I expected.

Men will be fun as well, with Anthony, Ziyi, Simon, Daiya and Rio, Yanhao, Hiro and Patrick. Super surprised by Germany sending Michelangelo here, as he did not skate well at Jr Test skates. Also, Felix, who won Jr Test Skates, does not have a JGP assignment yet, and Genrikh doesn't have a second assignment yet either.

I think that this event is around the same time as the Olympic qualifier? My understanding is that Genrikh Gartung will also be skating senior this season. If so, I wouldn't be surprised if he gets sent to the qualifier. It wouldn't be easy for him to gain a spot for Germany there, but I think he has more of a chance of doing so than Nikita Starostin.

Oh, the mention of Genrikh was just to signify that Germany is "running out of spots", so to say. He'd be entitled to two JGP spots, and one JGP spot will be held for the skater with the best result at their first JGP assignment, so there's effectively only one unassigned JGP entry, but two skaters who finished ahead of Michelangelo at Jr Test skates and don't have a JGP assignment yet.

they finished ahead of michaelangelo but that was in the SP+FS part of the competition. but german test skates also had a jumps monitoring and iirc Michaelangelo showed of clean 3A, where many of the others who placed ahead of him in the comp didn't, so maybe they are willing to overlook the results and promote a skater who is capable of ultra-si

The standings were calculated using all three segments, from what I was told, but you are right that he is the most promising German Junior man (apart from Genrikh) in terms of technical content.
I only feel sad for whoever then has to miss out on the JGP, especially because Robert, Leon and Soner finished within a few points of each other, and only two of them have (will have?) a JGP assignment.

Polman/Renoldi were withdrawn from Riga but they are stil in the Ankara roaster (Italy have no Napolitano/Comi listed as Subs in Ankara). I would guess both them and Napolitano/Comi can do Gdansk. And nothing for the other lower level pairs....indeed, no other pairs was present at the monitoring for JGP selections at the end of June.

I thought our new ukrainian pair Herrera/Hobta was supposed to paticipate here, but they are absent. Our federation is silent for now 🙄

Especially interesting as Herrera/Khobta are indeed on the Junior entry list for John Nicks. I also don't think there should be any issues due to visas or anything, Thailand is pretty traveler-friendly.

Dates may be too close? John Nicks is Sept 2-3 and they may need to go straight from NYC to Bangkok; otherwise too tight for them to go home and fly the 26 hours or so to Bangkok.

USFS only has 1 pair team confirmed in their International Assignments page. Moss/Galbavy and TBD

It would have made more sense for them to chose JGP Bangkok if the two competitions were too close together. The Jr event at John Nicks doesn't even count for WS points, and eventhough they are a new team, there was a (slim) chance of making the JGPF with two JGPs.

And aren't Moss/Galbavy in the same position? They're also doing John Nicks and JGP Bangkok.

Yes they are. Would be so tiring, me thinks

That's exactly what I thought. Outings matter, and they could have done another Challenger later. Now there is only one event with pairs left in Gdansk so there is no chance they will make the JGPF. I also checked earlier events in Riga and Ankara but they weren't there either.
Also I've noticed that ukrainian ice dance teams are also missing from Bangkok entry lists. So now I am just confused because I thought we had enough quotas for that as well.

edit: I went back and checked the orinigal JSP post. Ice dancers weren't suposed to take poart in Bangkok, but pairs were. Don't understand what is happening.

Cheung/Lee and Callahan/Furman weren't confirmed on the Skate Canada international assignments page after the entries came out.

I'm not surprised about the withdrawal, but still :( over it. Hopefully they'll confirm Callahan/Furman on the site if they weren't withdrawn.

Both teams deserve to compete
