2025 NHK Trophy: General Info and Pregame Chat

Gagh! I am going crazy trying to settle on my skate picks. My brain looks like the scores flipping around by the judges before being input into the lottery that is skate picks...pairs and men especially are bedeviling me

When I click on Time in Other Places, it indicates that both, Pairs SP and Woman SP, happens at the same time- at 2:35pm Japanese time and, consequently, a conversion into in other time zones follows the same; both competitions at the same time...?

Shades of Rudy Galindo:dance3:

I don't get up in the wee hours live even for Jason, so it's not happening for Jimmy, but I'm looking forward to it.

can somoene explain why is the NHK so much weaker over all if not in every single category. In dance they do not have any o fthe major teams as Fear and Gibson have not looked super and the Italians ditto. Inmen they have yma who has over the last year been looking more vulnerable and a lot of the Euro men aren't here. The Americans have their third string here. In pairs it really looks like a gift for two teams to get a medal. The ladies has Kaori but surprisingly no top American And not thenext two top Japanese ladies. This competition is really urelatively by far the weakest competition. Is there a reason???

Yes. The two top teams/skaters in the event are determined by the skaters/teams who were in the top 6 at Worlds. It is not allowed for two from 1-3 places, nor for two from 4-6 places to be in the same event. They pick their events in order of their placement. In an Olympic year, top skaters quite often choose to go earlier in the season. And there is also a tendency to skate at their home GP if they are from a big fed.

For the other entrants, they are invited by the Japanese federation, from the eligible pool, so blame them.

Some feds try to get the best skaters. Some try to be sure their skaters place as high as possible.

When you look at all the teams, G/F placement is not too bad. A boost won't help JPN dance too much as the field is tight. G/P have a difficult RD and have made mistakes in it twice. If they go clean we should see them rise above T/T I think. It will be interesting to see who is in the K & C with them. Greg Z seems to be doing most of those duties for some reason. W/Tz are doing just fine - they need to develop their presence a bit more still. Shibutani's will tell us a lot - we will probably learn a lot about them. If they are working with Marina, then we should see a decent skate - I remember last Olympic cycle she had Daisuke & Kana who skated decently except for mistakes as newbies to ice dance.
I thought Daisuke & Kana were fabulous. I was obsessed with his feet.

Check out the Gala thread. The participants are in the first post!

First post of gala thread

Charlene & Marco are not in the list, perhaps because her injury was not minor?

Also, Sui & Han are not there
Charlene posted on instagram that she has been on painkillers for the last 2 days and that she really is sad not to be able to be in the gala.

Sui/Han didn't do the gala in China either so not really surprised about this.
