I hate that the North American skaters don't get to have that last big competition in an Olympic year like the European skaters do with Europeans. It's a big deal to get to compete and do their programs one extra time that US and Canadian skaters and teams don't get. With this is mind, they might be going to avoid falling out the second group. A lot of teams will get points at Europeans and Z/K could be in danger of being in the third group if they don't get points from 4CC. This is what Jackie Wong said anyway.
USA and Canada would need to do their Nationals before Xmas. Why not do so in Olympic years ? But in some ways, it's even worse for countries like Japan and Korea who do their nationals early enough and then do not have a chance to participate in ISU championships. I guess some of their stars still compete but the schedule is still tight.I hate that the North American skaters don't get to have that last big competition in an Olympic year like the European skaters do with Europeans. Jason landed beautiful 3A’s in practice according to Jon Luc but missed them on camera. It has never been an automatic success for him.. always chasing it. I watch and appreciate him for everything else.To make sense we'd have to believe that Jason will rectify whatever is going on with him, and will also magically land both triple axels in the short and free. I don't think that is a given, and most likely not in the realm of possibility. I hope I'm wrong though.
He had boot problems.Jason had a worse season last season than this one. His only good comps were Worlds and WTT. It was so bad he had to retire from nationals and petition for worlds
Yes, he did! I also believe wholeheartedly that he was battling something beyond his control at this year’s Nationals too. I have no confirmation of this, but he did appear to be ill before his FS.He had boot problems.
I also thought it was odd, but from listening to Jean Luc Baker during a practice it sounds like his parents "aren't allowed to be there." So I took that there is either superstition about them being there or their nerves like Ilia's mom. Since the skaters don't really have any time to visit with loved ones during the event they probably stayed in California. If they found out Sunday morning about making the team it would have been too late to get a plane ticket maybe. Who knows the real reason for his parents not being there at the gala, but I'm sure he got an over abundance of calls and texts from his family about making the team.I asked this elsewhere, but why didn't Anthony get his jacket from his parents like everyone else?
He got it from Polina Edmunds - they grew up together as their parents were friends
Yeah, maybe they should bring back a North American championships (with South America and Caribbean also included). The Four Continents substitute includes Asian, Australian, et al skaters, who live halfway around the world from the American continental region. All the Asian skaters have several Asian specific comps in addition to 4CCs. It's about time for an American region only comp, where they could also bring back the 'Fours' event in pairs, which used to be so popular in Canada.I hate that the North American skaters don't get to have that last big competition in an Olympic year like the European skaters do with Europeans. Yeah. It seems like Anthony's parents have never wanted to give any public impression of pushing him. They don't push him privately either, according to what Anthony has said in interviews. It seems like this career in ice dance is something Anthony desires. His parents have always supported his skating goals, but likely have never wanted to be seen or described as 'stage parents'. They have always been low-key and fairly absent at rinks where their son trains and competes. In any case, the last name alone has sufficed to boost Anthony's profile and career chances.I also thought it was odd, but from listening to Jean Luc Baker during a practice it sounds like his parents "aren't allowed to be there." Yes, it was quite nice to see the legends (Carol Heiss, Tenley Albright, and Dorothy Hamill) introducing the current ladies
To be fair—having those particular parents watch you compete, would be rather intimidating for any ice dancerI also thought it was odd, but from listening to Jean Luc Baker during a practice it sounds like his parents "aren't allowed to be there." No Peggy Fleming?![]()
No one knows, of course, but I personally would guess that there was a wish to find an opportunity for Jacob Sanchez, an up-and-comer with buzz who finished fourth among the Senior MenDoes anyone know why Patrick Blackwell was not selected for Junior Worlds even though he won junior nationals?
Probably pressure and nerves. Especially after failing the first jumpI didn't get in to a lot of the practice sessions but I did see Jason run through his free and he was landing the 3A cleanly. Don't know what happened between then and the competition. So sad.
Didn't see Peggy Fleming all week. Doesn't mean she wasn't there but if she was it wasn't obvious.
Tomoko Hiwatashi: 201, 236, 237, 245, 230I have to say I think it's unfair not to have named Tomoki first alt to the Oly team. He did better at Nats and had better results than Jason all year and he's never been while Jason has been twice. I expect (hope) it'll be a moot point but... Also I think Max should have been named to the World team OR Tomoki and not Jason. Just my two cents adjusted for inflation.
