I agree, the article is veryyy chat GPT-esque. clearly written by someone who dosent follow figure skating, or hasnt followed since 2006 and only watches the olympics every 4 years. must have searched up "most popular figure skaters 2026" and went from there. very few modern costumes..
 
This video from Adam Rippon is about his visit to the LosAngeles studio where the US women's costumes were designed and made. There's an interesting discussion about choosing the right fabrics and trimming...especially the weight added by crystals and beading

So here's from LA to Tokyo and NHK short doc on Satomi Ito, the best known Japanese figure skating designer. She became a big name in the business designing 30+ costumes for Yuzuru Hanyu but worked also with Shoma Uno, Mao Asada, Satoko Miyahara, Rika Kihira, Mone Chiba, Kao Miura, Shun Sato and Yuma Kagiyama, but also with foreign skaters including Zhenya Medvedeva and Ilia Malinin, and many many more. I believe she's the designer behind current Olympic costumes of Mone, Yuma, Shun, Kao and Ilia.
This is NHK World so fully subtitled in English, enjoy :)

as the self proclaimed authority in this matter i think Schubert and Lorenz's costumes are very decade appropriate and show that the decade trademark was cringe, Witt's iconic Carmen would make Joan Collins feel jealous and probably actually did; Michelle Kwan took the first chenille minidress she found in her closet, it was a sale at WallMart. Johnny Weir presents a photo evidence of why i have an award named after him. my daughter Eva Lotta made it with this and not her lettuce dress? disappointing

Probably an unpopular opinion but...I hated almost everything about Witt's Carmen. The dress looked silly to me and she seemed to spend most of the time flirting with the judges.

The one thing I did like was her first jump, which was perfectly timed to the music, but the program went downhill from there.

Again, just my (not so humble) opinion. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Re: Michelle's chenille dress, I think I read somewhere recently that Vera Wang designed it. Who knows?

The picture they chose of Michelle's Lyra Angelica dress is not a very good one. :(

Michelle did not like fabric. She popularized the sleeveless skating dress. Her necklines were always simple -- she did not like the feel of excess fabric around her throat area. She did not go in for theatrics in either costume of performance, preferring to let the skating speak for itself. :)

Thank you, thank you, thank you, and thanks to @ramurphy2005 as well. That was marvelous. For me, it was a fly-on-the-wall experience to get to eavesdrop on two professionals discussing their craft.

I especially liked the part about the all-black versus red-underskirt matador outfit.

I wonder how often skaters wear stuff they don't like or are not comfortable in. Reading your post, @Mathman reminded me of a clip from "A Passion to Play", a show that featured interviews with Dorothy Hamill, Kristi Yamaguchi, and Nancy Kerrigan. They discussed the white dress that Nancy wore for her 1992 long program, and also interviewed Vera Wang, who designed the dress.

(Vera) Because I was a skater myself, I couldn't ignore the fact that actually that you're not out there just to look pretty, you're really out there to perform as an Olympic athlete.

(Nancy) The white one that I wore in '92 that became famous and now everybody wears the sheer stuff and you know, it became real popular after that, it was matte jersey, and it didn't move, and I was like... but...I can't...ya know, I have to....my arms have to go up, and I have to twist around, and it was difficult.

(Vera) I was just hoping that somehow she didn't pull in for a double Axel, or a triple Lutz, and the whole thing just rip. So I was just sitting there on the edge of my seat completely freaked out.
