Alina Zagitova

Interestingly, I was about to post a link to the same competition but different camera angle - do you notice how she is trying to stay focused and presses her hands to her ears so that she can't hear Evgenia's score? Alina knows exactly what to do to get and to stay in the zone.

Guys, let's play a drinking game. Every time she lands a jump we take a drink.

I expect us to be very drunk by mid afternoon (her time), late morning (my time).

I should be careful, friday 28th september is my name day and also national holiday (after "svatý Václav", saint Wenceslaus I., patron of Bohemia), so I have to spare myself because there will be celebration in Friday. And I'm not so young as I once was to withstand two days of continuous drinking

Hope we get to celebrate your name day and Alina's victory all in one neat party.

And you can then take her Saturday Gala EX performance (debut) of Lara Croft as your very special gift.

Thank for this wonderful vid!!

Alina needs to find her zen zone and get there before every competition. I guess part of it is practice (being in enough of them) and part personality (she is a serene person) and then learning how to work with the two in stressful situations (at the recent Autumn Classic we saw a bunch of skaters that were nervous and Hanyu even admitted he was too, so I guess it never gets old).

At least she doen't have to contend with Pooh-nado like some of the men do before they skate.

Think of Masaru and find the zone Alina!! You love performing girl so hang on to that, hard.

Wow.

Eteri must have some sort of magic pep talk. I've seen her with Evgenia and Sasha before their skates, and it's the exact same thing: hold their hands, make them laugh, make them jump a little, and send them on their way with a pat.

I know Alina said before in interviews she didn't listen to Evgenia's score, but I can't even imagine how stressful that moment must have been. Europeans marked the shift from the "Evgenia will be the Olympic champion" narrative to the "Will Alina beat her?" narrative.

It's sad, but I was looking at the old Russian ladies threads, and

In 2015-2016 GS had never heard of Alina.

In 2016-2017 Alina's first mention! ...in a comment that of the JGP ladies, she was the only one without a fan fest. :( Then lots of arguing about her backloading. Eteri was frequently criticized, but Evgenia was the upstart back then so it was her retirement/meltdown/career-ending injury that was predicted every third post. No one expected Alina to win JGPF or go 2nd at Nationals. Oh, and GS thought the ladies roster of 2016 Nationals counted as a bloodbath

In 2017-2018 "Zagi" became a serious contender as Russia's #2 but the OGM was still Evgenia's "to lose." But as the season goes on, this becomes less and less the case, so much that I'd believe it if someone told me Evgenia, Eteri, and TAT were the only ones truly shocked by the Olympic results. More arguing about scoring, more arguing about Eteri, and some surprisingly accurate predictions about Evgenia's puberty awaiters becoming Alina's puberty awaiters by Grin. GS also thought the ladies roster of 2017 Nationals counted as a bloodbath.

Conclusions:
1) No one can predict who be the next great talent in Russian ladies.
2) Except Eteri. Eteri is here to stay.
3) I'll be laughing at the posts that call Nationals 2018 a bloodbath, once the roster for 2019 comes out.
4) If the Evgenia pattern holds, in another few years, Alina will have enough fans that I can visit general skating forums again. :)

Guys, I posted this on the Nebelhorn Trophy forum here but since the competition hasn't started yet I think I can post it here as it might be of interest.

Some lovely peep on Instagram made a spreadsheet with the local time of competitions in several different time zones

Russians Nationals will be THE bloodbath in 2022... But 2019 is not to be underestimated already. I am waiting the next 'Civil war' for this season.

Btw this video is so epic and I love the tension, drama and the fierceness of the girls...

P.S. Where did 600 pages go?!

War,bloodbath, bombs, fear, revenge - and this is all about 15-18 year old girls with a height of 1.50-1.60 :laugh2:

Speaking of being weak though. Do you guys ever notice how when you get nervous watching a skater perform is when you start to really care for them and sincerely root for them? Like I remember nonchalantly watching Alina at the Cup of China last year, thinking wow she's pretty good. And now I have to calm myself through elaborate rituals before daring to turn on that TV. (Maybe I just have an unusually feeble mind ;) )

I'm beginning to feel this way about Eteri's junior girls, too. Especially when Sasha did her short program a couple of weeks. But the thrill is also why I always come back to figure skating, I guess. No risk No reward. I love this sport :)

YES!

I had gone through the last few seasons not that emotionally invested.

But - then at 2016 Worlds it was Sui & Han.

And then at 2017 Cup of China - Alina

My ritual last season (except for CofC which I knew results beforehand) was to avoid seeing any results before I saw Alina skate.
During the Olympics I watched everything in live time.

This system was working so well
.... until the Worlds LP :drama:

Now I don't know what to do!!!!

We need Eteri to give us all pep talks before Alina skates.

I don't think I will be brave enough to watch Nebelhorn live.
