Shoma was clearly awkwardly standing off to the side not knowing anyone, and Yuzuru went out of his way to make him feel included. I wish Evgenia had done the same for Alina, who is just as new.

Well, I don't want to sound rude but it's not any other skater's responsibility to integrate Alina in their community. In fact, I even see myself in Alina in terms of socializing and I know how embarrassing and awkward it can be in such situations. But as introverts we have to learn to cope with life and to reach out for others without anyone to push us. Let's be realistic - it may be her first senior season but not her first competition with those people. She has met many of them even back at the JGPF in Barcelona, where by the way Evgenia helped her to get a picture with Yuzuru. At the very same Gala event the girls challenged themselves doing parallel triple jumps, so there has been a try for an inclusion. Also, don't forget that Alina doesn't speak English which definitely is an obstacle for making friendships on an international level.

And Evgenia didn't jump the flip to get Hanyu's attention. Normally she would've gone for 3-3-3 at least, my guess is she made the flip because she popped in her gala programme. She always does her jumps afterwards if she had failed them. Another thing - those girls are together every day, for me it is understandable for Zhenya to want to communicate with her international friends, especially with Yuzu and Misha Ge (the big trio), and not stick to Alina as a big sister because international skaters meet only on competitions. If you have followed this season, you would know that the only competition, where the trio was back together, dates from the Rostelecom cup at the beginning of this season.

Since its a fan thread and I also find Zagi very charming and sweet, I want to wish her to challenge herself not only in sport but in her day-to-day life to get out of her comfort zone and to try to reach out to people, no matter how scary it might be. She has enough time to grow :console:

Very interesting to hear her reflect on her experience in the new documentary: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gHuuqKxH9A

Dunno if its been posted already, but if anyone needs a translation, let me know. Alina is such a sweet girl, it's so refreshing to see a gold medalist be so uncannily humble and gracious, even in the childlike way. The part where she shows all the stuff she received in the hotel room is precious, she's like "look, here are some yummy things!". SOOO cute :drama:

It's not quite right and shortened/simplified version of translation and it doesn't convey nuances. It was said by her with sarcasm implying journalists are fools for even asking such obvious questions (question was: was she happy or sad after receiving the medal)

To be honest I thought she needs some PR training - or just public speaking in general. The way she answered the question is a bit awkward (especially the phrasing she used...), it could've been answered a lot more naturally, like a Russian equivalent "of course I'm happy - who wouldn't be?". But it's cute that she's so candid anyhow :)

Oh, and regarding English speaking barriers, did anyone notice how Tessa hugged and talked to Alina at the end of the gala as they were exiting the ice and taking pics with the gold medalists? That was really cute. I'm guessing there's not that much of a barrier to people who are genuinely friendly.

I'd love a translation, please! Tessa is so sweet, she's always been like that towards everyone! She's the perfect balance of Scott, who can come off as a little arrogant sometimes.

I just rewatched Evgenia's FS final moments (after scores was announced). What I am really pissed off at - is how other skaters in "green room" (Miyahara, Osmond) treats Alina - completely cold and indifferent. Just compare it with Bruno/Massot treatment - their rivals at least congratulate them or even hugs them - as far as I remember. And that disgusting scene later when some canadian girl roughly bumped into Alina rushing to congratulate Osmond .. uff. It looked absolutely deliberate to me. So much hate and envy to our girl >_<

Going from memory, but I specifically remember Miyahara congratulating her.

Hm.. maybe it was due to different cameras in different translations. I watched russian Telesport with Lipnickaya commentaries - and there wasn't anything like that.

Where is that video on youtube? I want to watch it again.

I saw that too a couple days ago and was appalled how some girl almost ran over Alina to get to Osmond. Then I thought it was several people in a small area and maybe it was just an accident. But let's face it Alina is an outsider and many establishment people in skating in Russia and abroad wanted Zhenya to win gold not Alina. It was rude for that girl to bump into Alina like that. She just won the most competitive olympic gold medal matchup ever in womens figure skating history (yes better than Lipinski vs. Kwan 1998) and the golden girl gets treated like that? It is troubling but I think she can handle it. I don't think she will crumble like Adelina did under the weight of the hate and the olympic gold medal. Of course Alina won't have the haters and hounders Adelina has so that will help her. And she's tougher than Adelina too she has already fired back at Ashley Wagner with a strong take.

Let’s just forget about Wagner (not like that will be very hard to do :rolleye:), and change the subject here. As someone who had at most seen Alina’s Euros performances prior to the Games, I’m seriously wondering what the story behind her Ex program is. Honestly, I was mostly cheering for Zhenya the whole time, but the rest of my family fell in love with Alina as well. We were excited to get to see her again in the gala and then...

I mean...the music...the candle like, what was that all about? It was just weird. Not hating, but why? :scratch2:

It was definitely different! An interesting program by Eteri, with Alina portraying the "priestess of fire", it was...memorable, lol. The tiger suit was fitting for being in Korea.

I hope Alina can relax for a while and catch her breath. She and Zhenya saved Russia from having their worst olympics ever. But Alina's gold saved Russia and then their hockey team won gold. Hockey is their biggest sport and ladies figure skating with the star power is also very big and growing with all the talent they have. Congrats to Alina for helping a wounded Russian sports program heal a bit during the olympics. And maybe it's time for the top athletes to speak out against the system run by men to strive for real change in the future. Having 2 athletes fail drug tests at the games was embarrassing. Alina helped cover up that embarrassment. But they were also close to not going to the games at all even as OAR and if that happened we would have never seen Alina and Zhenya skate so great and lift their sport and even more importantly their country so high!

The official broadcast didn't show it, as they were focusing on Evgenia :rolleye: but on NBC page there is "Reactions to Alina Zagitova's gold medal victory" http://www.nbcolympics.com/news-feed#?sport=FSK
It's probably geoblocked, but it shows Satoko and Kaetlyn congratulating Alina. Satoko acted the same as Wenjing, she patted Alina's shoulders when it was certain she won, and then they hugged.
