Alina Zagitova

Whole post

I loved your post and it's observations, taking a cue from it, let's look at all 5 PCS components.

This season, looking at all the three competitions we've had so far (yes I'm including Japan Open for the fun of it even if it doesn't count for ISU stats it still had ISU judges and the Tech Panel had the head of the ISU Technical Committee).

So looking at only the final, raw (already averaged between judges, highest and lowest taken out - but not factored, as in multiplied to get final PCS), her PCS numbers are:

- SP
At Nebelhorn: Skating Skills 9.05 Transitions 8.85 Performance 9.30 Composition 9.10 Interpretation 9.20 (Highest: Performance; Lowest: Transitions)
At GP Helsinki: Skating Skills 8.89 Transitions 8.93 Performance 8.86 Composition 9.04 Interpretation 9.00 (Highest: Composition; Lowest: Performance)

- FS
At Nebelhorn: Skating Skills 9.35 Transitions 9.20 Performance 9.45 Composition 9.40 Interpretation 9.45 (Highest: Performance tied with Interpretation; Lowest: Transitions)
At Helsinki: Skating Skills 8.86 Transitions 8.86 Performance 9.07 Composition 9.14 Interpretation 9.14 (Highest: Composition tied with Interpretation; Lowest: Transitions tied with Skating Skills)
At Japan Open: Skating Skills 9.21 Transitions 9.14 Performance 9.36 Composition 9.25 Interpretation 9.43 (Highest Interpretation; Lowest: Transitions)

The take away: Performance, Interpretation and Composition are her strong suits, she should keep at it to build it up even more; and the points she need to improve on the most are Transitions and Skating Skills.

Skating skills is already on her improvement radar and I'm sure her Transitions score will rise as she increases the former, as a stand alone Transitions is where she stands to gain the most score in the short term. But, both things are probably somewhat tied to one another, when one score rises so will the other one.

The fact that she has incredibly complex programs and is newly performing both of them is probably what's keeping these scores somewhat below the rest. By the end of last season she was above 9 in all the PCS components and when she lagged in any of them it was in SS and Transitions.

With her programs, when the wheels come of the bus, these two components are the first to get under that bus, possibly because, again as she has intensely packed and super hard to perform programs, that's where the struggle becomes more noticeable for the judges.

Taking this into account the two GP Helsinki programs mark a turnaround for Alina, for the first time in a while, when one wheel popped out of the bus she managed to keep driving it until it was safely back in the garage with only three wheels remaining. As you can see from the scores above, in the case of her SP, that save was amazing and she got her deserved 1st place because her job was exceptional there.

For her the technical depends on being cool headed to deliver as she knows she can, and once she gets the jumps under her belt in a confident manner with an execution she can be happy about, she is able to let her skating skills and performance abilities shine through and take a bow (and a bunch of high scores). As we've seen from her amazing cone slalom in Japan, she has skating skills to spare, she needs to be calm to let them take her on a smooth trip around the ice performing her demanding programs.

I know this is already beyond super long but I just have one more thing to add: and guys, she will only get better, and better, and better. Yuzuru's first medals at Senior GP Final and Senior World Championships were a silver on the first and a bronze on the later both in 2012 when he was 17. Alina is 16, and already won a gold in Senior GP Final, placed outside the podium at WC but got an Olympic Single World Medal plus a Team Silver one.

 I thought she always had the tights half covering the skates last year????

And she did, you can see on her back foot, the tip of her white skate boot is showing.

They probably photoshopped it because they liked it more this way.

:2thumbs:
The First Masaru Triumvirate is here and ready to conquer. We have puppy eyes AND sharp teeth. Be afraid. Be very afraid.

We are undefeatable, all powerful! None can stand before us! We shall conquer the world with these adorable puppy eyes and fangs! :dev3::laugh2:

Well, when you mention it, in our ultimate film fairytale Three Wishes for Cinderella, Cinderella has some treasures hidden from her stepmother in an old barn guided by an owl :)
So, owl is a guard to all house equipment, books, boots and all, from the teeth of dire Masaru

This movie looks so interesting. I want to find it with subs and watch it now. :)

Tell me about it. Just a short visit of the comments on youtube after such competition as was in Helsinki is the way how to start to "not like" some people very quickly.

Tell me about it when I used to see those comments I just want to... :dev2: But realized it's not worth my time and thankfully now I can't see them.

I was just about to say it looked photoshopped.

Very interesting overview of Alina's PCS marks, many thanks lusk8 :thank:

I totally agree that Alina getting marks well above 9 in PCS is an achievable goal for her, it's very easy for some "FS fans" to criticise her even without watching her performances. The fact that you like or not like a program is something subjective and will not matter for the PCS that judges offer; they will look into:

-SS, which Alina already proved she has, just watch her obstacle course on the japanese show, she skates with power and flow over the ice

-Transitions, her strongest component, all her transitions are insanely difficult and she should be waaaay above other skaters, imo it should be a 1-2 points difference at least between her and other skaters (I'm not taking here into account our super 3A juniors, but her international competitors from this year)

-Performance, just look at my avatar; Alina improved a lot in this department, she looks so involved in every movement that she performs, the tempo varies according to her music and she has a unique style for every program, perfectly suited to its theme

-Choreo - the truth is, Alina's program is building in such a way that every single PCS criteria will be met: every step, movement is motivated by the music, the patterns are diverse and original. Yes, some people don't like it, but it doesn't mean that it is not true.

-Interpretation - Alina has the ability to create, through movements, a translation of the music and also to use the tempo of the music (I just remember her SP, in the final part, where the music becomes suddenly more intense, and her skating is too, culminating with that gorgeous 3F).

Sorry for my longer post but I always wanted to comment on the PCS discussion, I don't find it fair at all that she gets so criticised when in fact she improved so much. Yes, there is still room for improvement, it always is, but she is skating on a very high level and deserves to be rewarded accordingly.

Thank you for taking the time to write all of that. I don't understand how people say Alina has terrible skating skills, but alas people will always have their own opinion...

Anyways, I made my friend who has no knowledge of figure skating watch Alina's FS with me and she said "This girl is amazing". Yes, yes she is :luv17:

Interview with Evgeni Plushenko.

This was posted on Youtube in July, but I don't remember seeing before.

At around the 3 minute mark, he talks about how he bet his wife AND his manager that Alina would win the Gold at the Olympics.

"Yeah, I have a lot of money right now"

I know the rest of it is not Alina related, but I enjoyed the whole video.
He has a lot of keen insights - and he saw Yuzuru Hanyu's potential greatness at age 8!

I'm sorry if this has been posted before and I missed it.

What is Alexandra Stepanova saying to Alina?

Personally, I think she's psyching her up for another attempt at the 3Lz-3Lo.

"You're Alina Freakin' Zagitova!!!! You've Got This!!!!"

PS - I remember a picture of Alexandra Stepanova holding Masaru from a few months ago, but now I can't find it.

There you go.

Although this version is in much lower quality than the preivous one, which unfortunately have no subtitles. The movie is from 1973 and still the most popular fairytale till now not only in Czech Republic, but in some other european countries too (Germany, Norway...).

During seventies we made many really beautiful fairytales BTW, like very true adaptation of Little Mermaid - very melancholic movie with sad ending or The Virgin and The Monster - gothic and dark adaptation of The Beauty and The Beast, yet very artistic and romantic too. And many others. So during christmas we watch fairytales, fairytales, fairytales :)

Oh, yes, Czechoslovakian fairytale movies are marvelous. My favourite is Král Drozdia Brada.

Careful, that is a slovakian movie (although created during federation yet so oficially it is Czechoslovakian movie and the king is played by czech actor), some Slovakian could take it personally :) But yes, I agree, that is a pretty fairytale too. Most fairytales created till 1990 are beautiful. Sad that nowadays filmmakers are not able to continue with quality. The best they are able to achieve is just "average" and even that is achieved rarely.

By the way, I'm not sure if this appeared here, nothing new, just an article after Nebelhorn trophy, yet still worth to read: https://realnoevremya.com/articles/2891-zagitova-opens-season-with-new-world-record

Thank you.
Those are fantastic pictures.
What a beautiful young lady.
....And Alexandra Stepanova ain't bad either

I was surprised to see at this competition that she was 23 years old, from that Masaru picture I saw I thought she was way younger. First time I watched Ice Dance was at the Olympics, then, as I liked it, I backtracked to find the programs of those I liked watching there. So, first time I saw this team, was right here in Helsinki. Can say it was a great introduction to them, they are really good.

Alina likes Ice Dance so much she's going to make a fan out of me too.

And when I find people that are nice and kind to Alina, and have fun interactions with her, I'm more than halfway done into being their fans also.

I completely understand you! lesnar001's link to Plushenko's interview has officially converted me into a Plushenko fan. I love it when people who matter in Russian figure skating say positive things about Alina.

I got the feeling Alexandra Stepanova was like Alina's big sister at the gala this time. It was really nice. She is a great ice dancer, too, and I remember her sitting and talking with Daniil and Eteri at the test skate. She will also be at Rostelecom, and hopefully GPF and Europeans and Worlds, so we might see more interactions with Alina.

Lastly, Eteri's mother has passed away. She was very good to all the girls at Khrustalni. :( Please, a moment of silence for this great woman who gave us a great coach who gave us Alina.

Wow she looked so young, that is super sad.

I wish Eteri’s family the best while they go through this hard time and hope they find solace in all the happy memories they have of times spent with her.
