Alina Zagitova

Alina,

Three and a half years ago I had the immense joy to join in following you on your amazing personal journey to greatness.

A beautiful, graceful girl with quiet dignity and amazing inner strength revealed herself to me as the months (soon years) went by, like the most precious pearl guarded inside an oyster.

Much like a pearl your journey started with personal hardship in the form of challenges: to further develop your beautiful talents and keep doing what you loved you needed to move away from your parents' home.

That was the grain of sand that you, in your very young age, had to develop, shape, cultivate, embrace and, ultimately, turn into a priceless jewel on your road to make your dreams come true.

Your family helped and supported you along the way, your Grandma was enlisted to move to a new city with you and help you stay there as you mastered your craft, your Father called upon his supporters to help him and your Mom fund your dream. You found in your coaching team people that believed in you and worked with you, but still the road was not easy and you faced many additional hardships.

That you faced them all with your head held high, fighting through them with all your might, showing grace and strength, is a grand achievement in itself.

You shaped your grain of sand into a pearl by adding layers to it. You showed your kindness, your love for your family, your friendliness, your love for animals, your joy in the small things in life as well as in the big things. Through all this you revealed yourself to us, your enchanted fans, as a complex, awesome, incredibly talented girl that is so much more than the sum of her achievements and talents. You showed us your kind heart and opened to us a window into your hopes and dreams.

A lot of those dreams are now a reality. And that fact is unreal, that at just 16 you achieved all the major titles in your sport and became just the second person in the whole history of modern figure skating to do so. You are also the youngest ever to reach this pinnacle and the first Russian figure skater to do so. The Champion of Everything!

But most of all you are the champion of grace, happy at being in any competition no matter how you place, showing true sportsmanship and always treating your fellow competitors with fairness. In soccer there's a phrase, "the beautiful game", used to describe the game played at its finest. You played the "beautiful game" in Figure Skating, you changed the sport through your mastery of it, your beautiful development of pushing the boundaries of it and your amazing and unsurpassed technical control of it, but, most of all, you changed it by showing us all that a young girl can have a great dream, make it a reality and remain a kind humble person through it all.

I wish that, in your 17th year of life, all your dreams come true and that you always find new dreams and inspirations to pursue. I wish you to meet kind, happy people, just like you are, to share a laugh with and many great moments. I wish you to have fun and always feel great about yourself.

We are all so proud of you, so happy to bear witness to your journey and you make all the sleepless nights, the constant refreshing of internet browsers, the searching for streams, the translations and sharing of interviews, the looking up of YouTube videos and pictures worth it. You bring happiness to all of us and I'm sure all will join me in saying that we wish you all the happiness in the world.

To an amazing 17 because you deserve it!!!

From all your fans.

Happy Sweet 17th birthday to Alina! 🎂 And to think I of knew her since she was 15. ;) To say Alina has come a long way in less than 2 years is an understatement. ;)
