“In a simple life, such girls are very distinguished by their beauty. In reality, this is not at all what we are used to seeing on TV or in the photo. Once I met Amy Takei (Japanese actress and model) on the street, and was surprised at how she stands out in the crowd. I don’t know if Zagitova is a celebrity, but I think it’s great to be a representative of another life. Its very existence is already an outstanding art. She is the person who adorns society. It must be supported. "

Japanese are my favorite fans, they never fail to shower Alina with the most generous compliments! It’s what she deserves!

Alina is a true patriot. Once again on the victory day she proudly reminds her great-grandfather:

In 2019, on the set for Channel One, Alina Zagitova, putting on a ribbon, told how the war touched her family.

“ One of my great-grandfathers fought near Vyazma, there he was buried. My grandparents turned to those people who found his grave and brought his earthly remains, and my grandmother took them to the grave of my great-grandmother. Another great-grandfather also fought, he was called up for war in August 1941, he fought as part of the 139th Infantry Regiment in the Suvorov Division, and had a lot of injuries. And he has a lot of orders and medals. He returned from the war - both before and after he worked as a blacksmith.

On May 9, my workouts are canceled, mom and dad cancel work. We are preparing for this holiday. Last year, I visited the Moscow parade for the first time, I really enjoyed it. And the real awareness came to me of what May 9 is, ” Alina said.

How Trusova’s departure will affect Zagitova’s future. Will the Olympic Champion return?

Does this new twist in Trusova’s life open up new opportunities for Zagitova? We try to understand the situation and make assumptions.

Before talking about how the departure of Aleksandra Trusova can affect the prospects for the return of Alina Zagitova and wether there can be any connection at all, we need to remember how the Olympic Champion announced that she would no longer compete in the 2019/20 season. This was a great example of the fact that if you are a public person, in statements regarding your future and your career you need to be as careful as possible, checking every comma and every intonation.

Careless words

Recall that on December 13, Zagitova, on the air of Channel One, said that she "was suspending her sports career." In my opinion, it was difficult to find a more unsuccessful wording. Firstly, it provides a wide field for various interpretations, which subsequently happened - the whole next week it was blazing in the world of Russian figure skating so hot that the heat from all this was felt, probably, even by people as far from sports as possible. Secondly, it’s not customary to express oneself like that in figure skating - usually in such cases they talk about early termination of the season. And, by the way, many experts, commenting on the decision of Zagitova, said just that. Obviously, this wording was not invented by the skater herself, but, apparently, the people specially hired for this are clearly not from the world of sports. On the contrary, Alina several times during the conversation emphasized that we are talking only about performances this season, and that she remains in the group of Eteri Tutberidze and continues to train.

The bottom line was: Zagitova will not participate in the championship of Russia, and, therefore, will not be selected for the European and World Championships in the second half of the season. Reason: lack of proper motivation. “ I now have everything in my life, but there should always be something missing, that's my opinion, ” said the skater.

Zagitova can be understood - she has won absolutely everything, and it’s hard for her to continue living under the same cruel regime in which she existed all the past years. And it's not about some special features of the Tutberidze group: in order to perform at such a level and achieve such results, you need to work like a damn with any trainer in the world. Zagitova said she wanted to take a break immediately after the 2018 Games in Pyeongchang, but in the end she skated another full season, with incredible exertion of all forces - both physical and mental - having won the 2019 World Championships and thus taking the last title, which she had not yet on her resume. And after the tournament she said that she seriously thought about giving up competiting, but the team working with her persuaded her not to do this.

In December, obviously, Zagitova’s arguments outweighed. Probably, the unsuccessful final of the Grand Prix, where she ended up last, and the hip injury, due to which Alina refused to participate in demonstrations in Turin, also affected her. I believe that she did not want to go to the Russian Championships in a state far from optimal, with a high degree of probability not getting into the top 3, and then having to read the headlines in the spirit of “Zagitova failed again” and a lot of likewise comments on the Internet.

“ She told us the phrase:' Stop forcing me. ' She constantly quitted with us, and we returned her, she quitted - we returned her again. We forced her. We said: "Put your signature under 'you have no right to quit'." In the summer, she never wants to enter the season, it’s hard for her. We talked with her that we were going to the Japan Open, to the stages of the Grand Prix, and then we look at her mood, ” Tutberidze said in a documentary for Japanese television in February.

What Zagitova said about her return

Over the past five months since the announcement on Channel One, we saw a million expert opinions of varying degrees of adequacy about the future of Zagitova, but she herself spoke out on this topic twice. The first is in the same Japanese TV documentary dedicated to the skater.
“ Ending my career? Difficult question. I haven’t decided yet for myself. I always want to do something. This is an athlete’s habit. I want to learn new elements. Next season I’ll try to reach a new level and return to the competitive ice, ” she said.

The second is in an interview for the May issue of the Russian version of Cosmopolitan magazine, which carried a cover photo of Zagitova.
“ I train, just as before. I am trying to find myself, I try new and different things. For example, it turns out that I am good at drawing, but it's just a hobby. I want to jump with a parachute, but they say I need to gain weight. I’ll definitely go to college, I think studying in sports management. This year I have to pass the exam, my studies will take first place, now I have classes with tutors before and after training, ” said the figure skater.

As you can see, there is no certainty. Yes, in winter Zagitova spoke of a desire to return to the competitive ice, and in the spring she spoke more about drawing and entering a university, but it would be wrong to draw any conclusions based on this.

And we can’t get into her head. Moreover, there are still opinions of parents, grandmothers, the Khrustalniy team, other people close to her - one cannot ignore them either.

Following the path of Sotnikova or taking Yuna Kim's road?

In my opinion, Trusova’s decision to move to Yevgeniy Plyushchenko is unlikely to have any significance here. Zagitova never complained about the lack of attention on the part of Tutberidze's coaching team, even when Trusova, Alyona Kostornaya and Anna Shcherbakova reached senior level. Moreover, at Khrustalniy are almost Russia's best at knowing how to distribute time between a large number of wards. Moreover, Zagitova also never publicly spoke about the need for some special attitude to herself, and in any case something like that would surely have surfaced in the form of rumours or behind-the-scenes conversations.
I am sure that fierce internal competition is not going anywhere - this is one of the cornerstones of the Tutberidze system. As well as the need to strictly follow the instructions of the coaching staff - here you can recall her interview with Vladimir Pozner last winter.

I repeat, as before, the key point here is the motivation of Zagitova herself. It can be assumed that for sure all this will be discussed with Tutberidze and her team, since if she returns to the ice, then it will be competitive - and all these points should be calculated. It is unlikely that both the figure skater and the coaching staff would like to occupy conditionally 6th places, and then grab a lot of negativity in their address.
Of course, there are not so many successful examples of such returns, especially in women's single skating. Here you can recall Adelina Sotnikova, who failed. On the other hand, there is Korean Yuna Kim, who, after winning Gold at the 2010 Games in Vancouver, missed part of the 2010/11 season and the entire 2011/12 season, and then won the 2013 World Championships and became second at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi. It is clear that 6-7 years ago, the times were somewhat different, but still. There is the example of Yelizaveta Tuktamysheva, who survived several renaissances, and even mastered the quadruple Toeloop last season.

In any case, any decisions on the part of Zagitova regarding the next season cannot wait for very long. The coronavirus pandemic plunged all world sports into a state of uncertainty, and figure skating is no exception, but sooner or later the skating rinks will open, and if there is a desire to return, preparation will have to begin.
