Just to clarify: being part of a national team is neither a requirement nor guarantee that a figure skater will receive GP spots. Those two things are not related to each other.
I.e I remember Gubanova was on a reserve team for 19-20, while Sotskova and Sakhanovich were not and had way worse results than Gubanova. However both still qualified for GPs and each were given 1 assignment, while Gubanova was not.
National team is primarily decided on a basis of who are world medalists + top 6 at nationals. However, as said before, being part of a national team only means government pays for your skates, costumes, choreography etc. It does not guarantee, nor does it mean anything else (like the Fed is „backing“ you) aside from that.
They could’ve included Alina to be funded, because they did so before for Sotnikova I believe. However, it is meaningless for Alina. I’m pretty sure she can afford to buy her own skates and dresses, and doesn’t feel like she needs to compete in order to get Fed‘s money. In fact, she can make her own decisions and life choices without looking to find funding, which is a very good situation to make weighted and well thought out decisions. However! If they included her in the team, I would’ve felt like it was some kind of a sign of respect towards her for all the things she did for Russian skating, and I do think she deserves that kind of treatment from them.

Alina is still eligible for at least one GP potentially two if RusFed (lol) or someone else invites her for their home event. I don't remember if there will be any update on ranking before GP assignments are out, I think no.
Will she get any? Judging by last season and how RusFed works, no.

The outline, as @nussnacker said above, is that being or not part of national team, theoretically doesn't have any impact on your assignments.

At the moment there are 6+2 national team members if I'm not mistaken. Considering each one of them gets 2 assignments that makes to 16 assignments. There are left 2 assignments theoretically which can be given to skaters out of national team. That includes though that the hosting country will prefer to call a Russian girl rather someone else (their own). Which is difficult considering that they will try to promote some of their own skaters.
So practically being out of the national team gives you very small chances to have more than one GP or a GP at all.

Look. As much as I like Maiia, she doesn’t have even a single GP guaranteed to her, she’s not doing well in terms of world standings, neither SB. Alina on the other hand stands much more comfortably with regards to both. Even if not count Maiia, I can not imagine a world where rusfed prefers to send Liza Nugumanova to a GP assignment instead of Alina. Liza doesn’t even have an international SB, she competed at JGP years ago and didn’t even get challengers last years, and Rostelecom results as far as I remember don’t count for SB. They can only give her a host spot.
So „8 members of a national team = 16 GP spots are taken“ theory is pretty flimsy and not realistic.
Hosting countries also have a large voice on whom to invite, would they prefer an OC who would attract crowds or skaters relatively unknown to larger masses? I think the answer is obvious.
Aside from that, there’s a „returning champion“ rule, where 2 spots are guaranteed if a former world medalist wants to return to GPs.

You are right and Khromykh example is a good one, that theoretically Alina has more chances and "right" to have GPs than others. But practically RusFed will push for her to have 2 assignments. In a world where Alina needs RusFeds permission to promote a film, I don't expect much. But, yes I agree, if everything go smooth, she can easily have two assignments. One she is eligible for and one in Rosetelecom let's say or NHK.

Wow...she needed their PERMISSION to promote a movie...what on earth?! Why the hell do they get to decide what she does and doesn't do when she is no longer their "property"? On one side, they clearly aren't interested in her competing (which is just stupid as the sport would really benefit from having Alina and Zhenya around for a few more years seeing as they still are the most popular female single skaters not any of the 3A, although I imagine Kamila winning the OGM would see her up there), yet they keep injecting themselves in her life (Alina and her popularity lead the way to more $$$ after all
). I hate them so much. This kind of stuff makes me wish Alina would retire just so she can really do what she wants without having to deal with the politics and toxicity of the RusFed.The way they have treated Alina and to a lesser extent Evgenia and Aliona should really be a warning to Anna since I see her being the next one who is disposable and to any upcoming young skater (Kamila, Sofia, Adelia) who is viewed as the next big thing. RusFed will happily benefit from you and when the next young thing comes around, you are all of a sudden losing motivation (scratch that. That doesn't just apply to RusFed but to their charming queen as well).
(Sorry for the rant...I know this isn't therapy but I just get so frustrated sometimes with the way the FS world is developing

She didn't. That's a mistranslation of what Hirokuni Tanioka, CEO of CB Co. that was one of the organizers of Alina's visit to Japan, had said. Alina wouldn't have gotten a permission to enter Japan - the only permission she needed and received - if she traveled only for the promotion of the movie since she's not an actress; but as a "world-class performer" (criteria approved by the Agency for Cultural Affairs of Japan) she got the visa and permission to enter Japan during covid lockdown to participate in the joint production of the new ex number.

Anyway to shift topics to something involving Alina in relation to her trip to Japan and COVID as well as almost all athletes.
I understood many if not most of the Russian FS team were exposed or got sick with Covid, mostly not serious cases but still. I never heard if Alina got it, a friend who is the biggest fan of hers I know in real life claims she is one of the healthiest skaters. Well aside that I saw a post on mother's day from Nathan Chan (a wonderful post on a pic with his mom) saying all his family have been vaccinated. I wasn't sure he was and of course given his age alone he would be lower priortiy. On the other hand especially in light of the upcoming games I was wondering if vaccination would be mandatory for the participants and if Russia's team as well as other countries have been making efforts in this regards.
P.S. Got my Pfizer doses myself.
