Anna Pogorilaya

Wow. Pretty bad news for Anna's fans.
http://www.team-russia2014.ru/article/figur/21272.html

"Preparing for the World Championships was very difficult for Anna - Anna Tsareva said, - After the European Championships she go on vacation, and when she returned she sprained foot. It was a partially torn ankle ligament, so almost a month she didn't do anything. She just slipped on the ice. We have started preparing for Shanghai only on March 12. In fact, we worked 10 days. But leg still hurts quite strongly, and this affects on perform the elements. So we weren't able to work over what we wanted. So, everything was compressed. Just Anna's desire to compete is much stronger than the pain of the injury, so she continued to prepare for the World Cup. Let's hope for the best - that nothing bad will happen during the competition. And then we go back home - and start the treatment."
"Because of the injury, of course, we haven't any purposes for the WC - Anna Tsareva said, - A whole month was lost. So in such situation it's difficult to predict anything.
"

This is a Google translation, but I fixed something, so you can understand something at least.

Well Ashley (or maybe someone else) has all the chances now.

Her coach is really an irresponsible and selfish lady indeed! Why leaked the news to the press at this point? Why not keep RSF posted earlier? Fearing losing this PRECIOUS Worlds spot? Simply ridiculous!

You're right, but you know, I think there aren't other athletes at the moment prepared for representing Russia at the Worlds. Leonova and Artemieva aren't strong enough for the WC. If she goes to Shanghai, it means she is ready to skate, to fight. And to be honest, it may sound weird, but given the very tough competition in the Russian team, maybe it's her last chance to go to Worlds as Russian. At least it's almost the only reasonable explanation.

Leonova did very poorly(even falling on a spin) at the Cup of Russia and ended up getting bronze behind Proklova and yes Elizaveta Yuschenko... Maria Artemieva is not a real option and Yulia is not even on the replacements list. Of course, that list wasn't submitted till right after Junior Worlds(which I found a little suspicious at the time...), but Yulia herself sat out a month out of training.

Also, Eteri had a similar situation with Pitkeev and Euros where Konstantin Menshov would have been a ready replacement.

I think it was Anna's decision to go to Worlds no matter what. She could have been easily replaced with Leonova or (why not?) Medvedeva and then as Medvedeva grew Anna would have to prove herself again from scratch. The competition among ladies in Team Russia is very strong. One missed step and you are out. She simply could not give this chance to anyone else. Basically they do not expect anything from Anna because Elena and Elizaveta would secure three spots for Russian ladies for the next season, so Anna's task is to keep her position in international ranking thus proving she's a top contender within Team Russia.

So sad and worried for Anna. I was hoping for a great podium-worthy skate but it might be impossible with an injury and little preparation. It's good that the coach doesn't have particular expectations. I hope Anna won't do herself any further injury.

And if the next season turns out too difficult for her because of greater competition from the Russian ladies, she should go and become a model. There, I said it.

Too soon.;) She's a tough cookie, she'll fight. I see her being around till the next Olympics at least.

Really sorry to hear this. I think Anna has improved a lot over the past year. I'm rooting for her to have a good showing at Worlds.

So sorry for Anna
I guess Polina Edmunds's dream about the podium has just become more possible...

Terrible news, but sounds like Anna's still gonna make a fight of it, so who knows?

Theoretically, this may open up a slot in the top 5. Even still, I wouldn't consider Polina a real threat to the podium at Worlds unless some crazy stuff goes down. Gracie is coming off a disappointing National showing, as well as the 4CC disaster (though I expect a major rebound.) Also, Wagner hasn't competed internationally since early December! I wonder what her mental toughness & conditioning will be like coming into the biggest international competition of the year after having a few months off. Still, I'd expect both Americans to end up ranking above Polina.

Sadly, I'd have to think this injury will be a significant hindrance in Anna's performance, else we wouldn't be hearing of this now...

I'm really sorry to hear this, but she is a tough girl. She's got character and she will give the max, I'm sure. All the best and good luck to her.

I really admire Anna for fighting tooth-and-nail to get on that National team. After CoR and GPF, it seemed like such an uphill battle... but she made it through and has a European medal. Then this happens. :scowl: No matter the results at Worlds, I think she's already done better than most were predicting after GPF.

While if it turns out that Anna truly isn't ready, this decision would indeed be problematic. However, as outsiders, I don't know if we can really judge. I have a hard time believing her coach would let her go to Worlds if it's really severe--as in, enough to make her less competitive than Leonova/Artemieva, or enough to endanger her future career.

Take a look at her open practice: http://www.tudou.com/programs/view/B3G4uomBP64/ She's a fighter, she does every jump. I wish her lots of luck.

That 3-3 looks great! She's definitely a fighter. My only wish is that she's healthy. Good luck to her. :cheer2:
