Anna Shcherbakova

Tars :Anna obviously has a real passion for ice skating. You can see this in the attention she gives to the aesthetic side of the sport. The beauty and grace that she expresses in her movements are inborn in her. I hope her bones will become stronger but her body is perfect for expressing the grace and delicacy she displays. Would some more muscles on her legs protect her better? I hope so.The speed of her rotations are amazing but I must say my heart almost stops beating every time she jumps because of her super slim delicate body. I love to watch her for her artistry. No one I have seen has those amazing gestures , quick( and as Tars points out) precise. And she actually breathes the music . So she is expressing her innate musicality, her dancing grace . I watch her not because I absolutely want her to win , though it is lovely when she does but all figure skating audiences should watch her for her artistry. ( I hope I am not biased)

Even when she doesn't win, I love her skating skills

And I don't understand, how her good skate in some minor local competition contradicts the possibility of Anna having already three JGP medals, Russian junior podium and ticket to junior worlds, if she was healthy aka burdened less in trainings. :confused2:

Any single injury or a failed competition is random, we need to see a bigger picture. During the recent years, of a dozen Eteri's skaters we follow, only Anna and Zhenya had injures. Is it statistically worse than average?

Btw., look closely at 1:17 and that amazing hand gesture!
It's so quick and precise at the same time - she has exquisite coordination, that is innate - you can't really train or learn things like that.

There are several gestures each second. Do you mean a gesture at 1:18?

The absolute best part of that program is at the end of that smile-frown part the little gesture with her hands in tandem with her expression. Either she does it much better than she has before or it's a new addition but it's never blown my mind like this. At the latter half of 1:20 on that video, I don't know if you meant the same one because of your time stamp.

Yes, the one after she finishes her spin, when she 'cast a spell' with her right hand. :)
Then she forms a smile after which a frown, what do you think it all means by the way?

I mean the FS story we know from her interview is that she's left her sister to discover the world, but no further details about her 'journey'.
I've met an interpretation, that at 1:54 she is swirling like Alice falling into rabbit hole, then 'opens secret window to another world' with her hands and big smile at 1:18 symbolizes the Cheshire Cat!
There'd been another beautiful gesture at 3:05 in previous performances, where she held something precious (bird? symbol of childhood?) in her hands, cuddled it to her chest and then carefully raised her arms to let it free. She's only accentuated it in today's skate.

This competition was good for Anna as you can see she has regained some of her confidence.
That's what I hope this will give her. More confidence and faith in herself. It can be very frustrating to struggle with something that's been really easy for her. A new SP is one thing but it must be painful to struggle so much with this free skate that she's used to performing at a very high level.

What I truly struggle to comprehend is how she looked so completely different in this FS from her SP performance, or in fact any other performance before this one. Even the sections before the jumps are totally different from before, the quality of her performing is far higher and the skating is more fluid. And this wasn't really the case with her SP at all, either... I wonder what clicked for her in between that SP and this FS? It's like she had some serious mental lock that she managed to banish.

I really think that this was her best skate ever, overall. Which is something I can say much sooner than I was expecting to be able to.

Well, let's not go overboard here. ;)
There were 11 triples in second half in Volkov's Memorial EX and 100k youtube views last skate of 2016/17 season.

Her jumps are still weakish comparing to good ol' days.
Well, she landed all the jumps and the layout actually is as difficult as any she's had. Maybe the jump quality could be slightly better but she also in my opinion has advanced her skating noticeably from last season and the artistic performing here overall felt stronger. Even so, it'd only compete against that senior competition skate for the title of her best skate ever which still is a great spot to be... You know, ex's are tough to count. That's her practice layout and she's done that layout in practice a few times last season. I'm not sure if it'd be fair to count that...

On a different note her VK fan page had this dance video posted on it.

If there's one thing I was almost looking forward to more than her skating videos, it'd be new dance videos of hers. She's such a talent. And I can't wait until she skates some actual exhibition skates, also.

Let's say, if I was one of her girfriends from the group, I'd stay away from her in these videos.
She's outshining anybody else there. ;)

No, I think she gets a new free. That's why it's a shame she couldn't compete in JGP or worlds or such... International audience would deserve to see this FS.

It's a shame, indeed. I wonder how much her FP would be appreciated by international judges pcs-wise? Russian judges tends to underscore it hugely - almost implying like they are not capable to appreciate artistic value of anything at all. Or it is this matter of difference of tastes and mentality again - after all Kostornaia's performances, which are somewhat similar in style to Scherbakova's were hugely underscored in pcs at RusNat comparing to her more bland rivals.

That's the case. However, they've really been warming up to Kostornaia. We have to remember she only scored around 180 points to start the reason, at a similar local competition. They really tend to score very low anyway. International exposure would have helped a ton, like good JGP appearances. However, if Anya brings the quad next season, they really have no choice but to push her because they wouldn't want to miss out on having a quad girl.

Internationally I have zero worries about her PCS potential. Especially with her coach being who she is. But she needs to get there first.

Congratulations Anna !:cheer:

I'm so happy with this news, little by little she's recovering, we know that she is capable of much more.
This will greatly help her confidence :luv17:

This version of the FS is from a different angle and is actually a 60 FPS video. They in general tend to upload really nice versions. You can see some things here that you couldn't otherwise.

And the +3Lo in the combo indeed is at same rotation speed as her quad after the first revolution. With triples you really don't reach the peak for much longer than 1 revolution so I'm unsure if that's actually the peak or if there'd be more in reserve... Well, that's something to think about for the next season. She needs to regain(And even improve!) her jump height first. It's not that, that far off, though. The air time is perhaps around 2 frames lower than it used to be. We'll see if she begins working on the quad around spring, after the championships.

Yes, that loop rotation was insane!
Many different interesting details to see from this angle and quality.
