Any Sasha updates?

Anything can happen. But Rossano is "in the loop" when it comes to SoCal figure skating. He usually knows more than he says.

I said I did appreciate his comments but going only by what he wrote here I read nothing to make me conclude Sasha will announce ger retirement this coming Monday.

Maybe she will give it up but there is still enough time if her body holds up.

Looking at that clip yesterday of Sasha at 15 made me realize that performance would be more than enough to win Natls this season.

I see no reason to be so pessimistic. Sasha was a special skater and I hope to see her be able to compete one last time.

Fair enough...I see no reason to be optimistic. :p (re. Cohen at least)

and that goes double....umm.....make it triple for Emily. ;)

I thought Emily did OK at SA, was glad to see her and apologize for taking a cheap shot at her.

She doesn't deserve it,,,,,and either does Sasha,

Well, the prospects of both aren't looking so great. But the difference is, I WANT to be optimistic about Hughes but she did nothing at SA that would allow me to be so.

To be honest though, I just want the strongest USA team sent. To me, only one skater seems to have seriously made her case for Vancouver...everyone else either still has something to prove or is in limbo...

Then it might be fair to say the prospects for Emily are not looking so good after seeing her at SA.

You haven't seen Sasha yet. That might not be a good sign but it is not conclusive proof either. Remember Sasha said herself she considers the GP events little more than practice.

Fans who think the GP's actually mean something (I don't) are the one's who are down on Sasha the most.

The GP's were not worth aggravating an injury over. Look at last year's GP champions. Neither one made the podium at Worlds.

Sasha is way too smart to think the GP's are anything more than a beauty pageant and winning them is of no consequence in an Olympic year.

It is about one thing for her and that is Nationals. It is exactly the same thing for the others. Nationals is ultimately all that matters and where their fates will be decided.

But the GPs aren't the "be-all, end-all" here. The point I think is being missed- the GPs are mainly for testing the waters, getting a rhythm going, and a chance to fix any mistakes.

On FSU they were suggesting that if Cohen by some miracle gets on the Oly team, that she do 4CCs for practice. But in reality, it's not practical because it starts only 4 days after the US Nats ladies event concludes, plus it's all the way in Korea. I don't think we'll be seeing any USA ladies there. But I do wonder whether Yuna will be "encouraged" to compete there since it's in her country.

(Is this thread just going to be a dialogue between you and me?! :p seems like it is).

Was wondering about this performance....

Pretty polished skating and performing for one so young

 She was a pistol back then.

As a musician, what did you think of Sasha's interpretation of the music in that performance? If I remember correctly there was criticism at the time along the lines that, at 15, how could she dare attempt such a rich and subtle piece as the Mendelssohn violin concerto?

It would have been interesting to see what the judges would have done if she hadn't fallen on the triple loop. Michelle gave a not-so-great performance of the Red Violin, omitting the triple toe-triple toe combination and also falling on her triple loop.

Sasha, however, was not age eligible for worlds, so they probably would have given it to Michelle that year no matter what Sasha did.

Edited to add: IMHO, the following was Sasha's all-time greatest program (from 2002):

I love that performance and everything Button said I would agree with.

About Sasha and "musicality" it is funny because I have read comments like "Sasha is not really that musical, she is just performing to the music and not really interpreting it."

I don't know what that means? Do they want her to stop skating and play the piano to show she is musical? :)

I think some of Sasha's detractors get irritated because she is one of the 3 or 4 greatest performers in the history of Ladies skating.

I might say Sonja, Janet, Katerina and Sasha could bring a certain spark to the ice that really made their skating stand apart from the others.

I think Yuna is trying hard to get into that group but I don't think any of her choreo comes close to the clip here.

For me Sasha is a very musical skater - sort of like Mao and she shows it the most in her exhibition programs.

I am wondering if Kristi belongs on the list of great entertainers? She was much more entertaining to me that Kat - but I know Kat was very well received.

Oh, what a delight to watch, Mathman! I'll see you that and raise you: here's her short program from the Nationals of that year; I remember it from the Olympics with great admiration. The music was perfect for her, a haunting but lively waltz.

Button and Peggy Fleming always were boosters of hers, because of her crisp movements and elegant positions. But even if I had watched this without commentary--even if I had watched it without music!--I would have been transfixed. It's skating like this that explains why so many of us won't give up on her as long as there's an iota of hope that she'll show up at Nationals. I hesitate to add this, but even if she's currently half as good as she was in 2002, I'd still root for her, because of the quality of her skating.

Didn't stop them from making Mirai Nagasu the champion in 2008...

Hello, earth to RD...:)

Michelle and Sasha were retired. Who else did they have to give it to?

There was no US Lady that warranted consideration of taking the title to Worlds that year.

ETA: Thanks for the clip Olympia. Beautiful skating

Yes, but there's someone else you're forgetting. She was an Olympian. ;)

sorry, but it woudn't have helped K if they gave a her rare papers or a truckload of papers. Maybe a paper dragon for morale purposes. ;)

But she did fall. She also completed 4 clean triples to Michelle's 6 and Sarah's 5 (with a 3/3). IMO, I think the greater "wuz robbed" argument was why Sarah was 3rd and not 2nd.

I think this is such a subjective matter. For me, I prefer Michelle to Sasha because of her ability to make me feel she is skating for me-or as Dick once said,"She makes you love her, makes you feel she loves you. That's a great quality to have." Sasha has a more introverted, private style. I've used this analogy before, but for me, her skating has a snowglobe effect: you are captivated by the beauty, but at a distance.

R.D...I'm guessing you are getting at Kimmie being held up more in 2008, being the reigning Nat Champ, and a World Champ, but she really did skate poorly. I wish she could've repeated.
