Any Updates on Tanith

One minute ago, Appropriations legislation just passed the Senate by one vote (Dick Cheney tie-breaker). Is this the measure that includes the 'Tanith clause'?
They're going like gangbusters trying to vote on measures this afternoon, before the Holidays Recess so, if the above is not 'it,' 'it' may happen later today!

the bill still needs to pass the House, which may not happen untill Jan 31st. Here's a quote from an abcnews article:
An aide to Acting House Majority Leader Roy Blunt, a Missouri Republican, said the House had no plans to reconsider the budget bill until sometime after January 31, the end of a long winter break. But the aide cautioned that plans could change.
My understanding that Tanith needs to become a citizen on the 20th at the latest. As a naturalized citizen, I can tell you that the courts perform the ceremonies only a couple of times a months. I am not sure if a last minute session could be scheduled and you can't just show up at any courthouse for the ceremony. You have to be in your juristiction. So technically speaking, even if the bill is approved (and I hope it is not, b/c of all the budget cuts) it may take another 2 weeks or so for Tanith to become a US citizen.

I believe the USFSA team selection revamp gives her until the 28th of January. And I thought I'd heard this version had passed the House? (In fact SOME version must have, because all spending bills, which this is, MUST originate on the House side. The Senate can only add stuff later.) If so, and this is the conference version and it's through the Senate, then the President just has to sign it, and since, much as I like the guy about some things, Bush has never met a spending bill he didn't like, that shouldn't be a problem. Hopefully he'll be feeling the pre-holiday push, too. (At least the Congress's pathological wish to be on vacation is good for *something.*)
IIRC, Tanith lives in the northern 'burbs of Detroit--they train at Plymouth and DSC, right? Meaning hopefully they're around and hopefully the bill will get signed before Christmas, leaving a month to arrange something with a federal judge in the Detroit area.

Then it must be a different bill. This bill passed House on Monday, but some minor changes were made that require House approval again, and the House doesn't meet again till the end of Jan.
I recall that the bill that would benefit Tanith already passed House a while ago.

Unless Levin split it off, the "bill" that will help Tanith (and Zavoizin, forgive my butchering his name) is not a bill, it's a rider attached to the approprations bill. Which is the likely scenario, as this is a minor issue and given the scheduling crunch at the end of this session wouldn't be likely to get through on its own. That's how most things of personal interest to Senators are slipped through without wasting floor time, by going as riders the majority of the Senate will never read. (I belive it works much the same on the House side, but I'm not as familiar with how they work.) The rumors a few days/weeks ago were that the bill had passed the House, and I remember it being said that it was "only the House" and wondering if the Senate would get to it in time. So either this is the House version and it's through Congress, or the Senate made further alterations to the bill and it has to go back again to the House.
Does anyone know what bill number it's attached to? I'm not coming up with anything on Google using general terms.

A little insight: my company's offices are located on the same floor/same building as those of Roll Call (a conservative-leaning Congressional news service...Morton Kondrake's group). I knew that something huge had passed when the floor errupted into cheers, as soon as Cheney cast his tie-breaking vote in the Senate. Not that the folks in Roll Call care a hoot about skating but...

That's what I thought--I remembered everyone got excited when the House passed it and I was thinking "let's see how cooperative the Senate's feeling."
Except for scheduling, don't worry about a Presidential veto. President Bush never met a spending bill he didn't like. I just hope he signs it soon and they can arrange for Tanith and Max to be sworn in quickly.
If that happens, all we need to worry about is Agosto's groin pull....

No, there's one more worry--the CIS has to get Tanith's paperwork ready, arrange for her to take the test, and make an appointment for her swearing-in. Then she has to apply for and get a passport. We have two holiday weekends coming up, and who knows if anyone will be at work at the CIS to do what needs to be done.

But it would be heavily ironic if, after all the hoopla, they missed the Olympics anyway because of injury. Since Tanith feels that all this is a "roller coaster," that final irony might make her just flat out collapse. (I'd be there to help bring her around, of course, knight in shining armor that I am.....)

CONFIRMATION - that's the bill that passed the Senate last night, which caused such joy in the offices of my next-door-neighbors, Roll Call. Check out this story in today's Detroit Free Press, specifically about it's impact on Tanith. Now only Bush needs to sign it!!! Lookin' good - lookin' good!

What about the impact on those whose budgets were cut, ie education, health and human services? What about those impacts? Sorry, I just cannot get excited about this when I work in education and I can see what $3 billion in cuts is going to do. AND with a disabled young adult as well in my life. Guess I just can't get excited over an ice skater being able to get her citizenship over the lack of funds to support our children getting a better education.
It is bittersweet, realistic. I know we need to reduce the deficits, but not on the backs of the poor. I'm not overly political, but for them to pass those cuts AND give tax cuts that will mostly affect the wealthiest Americans just seems wrong.
Congrats to Tanith, though. If there is one bright spot it's that we can know that she's a bright spot in our cultural development.
