anyone else watching GP finals on CBC?

Throughout the telecast it seemed that Tracy and Kurt were rooting for Yu Na. Apparently Tracy worked with Yu Na in Canada alongside Brian Orser. It's understandable that they would support her given her coach is a Canadian.

Tracy is part of Yu-na's coaching team. She runs the Cricket club with Orser. However, she is always complimentary to Mao... And likes Mao a lot.. Notice she blamed the choregraphy and not Mao..

But Kurt, I wouldn't say he prefers Yu-na. Once again last year at worlds in front of Tracy he said he thinks Mao's going to win worlds, and in an interview a year ago he said Mao was one of his favorite skaters (he said he liked her triple axel, and she reminded him of Kristi Yamaguchi) Kurt is a big fan of Mao.

So while yes, Tracy is definetly biased although she has always been complimentary of Mao.

I think it's totally possible that Kurt just doesn't like Mao's program.

And may I say that last year I was open for my dislike about Yu-na's long program.. And I loved Mao's program. So it's totally possible that they don't like Mao's program, and it may not necessarily be biased or them just "hating" on Mao.

I wouldn't assume especially in Kurt's case, since he's been such a big fan of Mao that his dislike for Mao's program, means he prefers Yu-na.

Kurt doesn't like Mao's LP. He said that the music and choregraphy didn't show case her lyrical style. I totally agree with him because I hate Mao's LP this year. To me, the LP music choice was a bad one for Mao plus it is not well choregraphed at all. She isn't really doing much until the step sequences. I can't stand her LP costume either.
I hope she won't have a program like that next year. Mao's PCS was higher than Yuna last season, I believe. This year Yuna's getting higher PCS because her program has much more chroeography and in betweens, thanks to David Wilson.

I think their criticisms are right on about this program, and other commentators have said similar things. The Eurosport commentators said they didn't like Mao's long either.....Do they hate Tarasova too? The Eursport commentators?

I'm pretty sure the Russian commentator on WebTV, Vasya, was quite appreciative of that program. And while Chris and Nicky were definitely not too keen about the Masquerade LP when Mao first skated to it on TEB, they were definitely quite excited and impressed by it after NHK. Nicky has even stated that he "stands corrected" about the program not fitting Mao and kept complimenting the choreo (!)...and again he mentioned how much he liked the program during the Eurosport broadcast for the GPF. Just wanted to point that out since your observation about the Euro guys is only half-correct.

In any case, the program is clearly an acquired taste, with some being completely addicted to it while others find it to be a complete bore. But its the differing opinions that make discussing skating fun, right?

The PCS scores between Yu-Na and Mao has been quite close this season. It's true that Yu-Na's LP on average has the edge in PCS, but the highest PCS for the LP in a single competition has been by Mao in NHK (unless someone wants to start arguing that Mao was held up since it was held in Japan...)

Well if your going to argue that the Canadians are dissing it because she's not using a Canadian choregrapher the Russian commentators need to be held to that standard. As for the Eurosport guys fine they like. But I still don't care for it. At All.

That's not the point I was trying to make. I was simply giving clarification on your statement about the Euro guys "not liking" the program. Is there really a need to presume things or respond so aggressively? :scratch:

Well thanks for the clarification... But I the point that they had a negative reaction at first, shows that this program is at least a aquired taste. I hate it. Just as much as I hated Miss Saigon last year, and I really hated Miss Saigon.

The only thing I like about the program is the cool footwork and the triple axels.

I believe there is something magical about Mao. I am taken up by her on the ice. But I must agree, Jeremy Abbott has proven himself to be a world class contender. He has always been beautiful, but this year he certainly looks stronger.

coconutpunch, don't feel bad. There have been many times where I try to say things as politely and diplomatically as possible on message boards, and I STILL pissed someone off. I for one, appreciate what you had to say Besides, it wasn't even you who said anything about the Canadians... you just brought some new info to the table.

What was the coverage of/commentary on the men like?

They were impressed by the transitions and footwork Jeremy Abbott had going into every jump. Kurt said when he worked with Jeremy on his short program last year, he could tell Abbott was the real deal. They thought Tomas Verner needed more training and Kurt said he hadn't quite lived up to expectations yet. They were impressed that Patrick Chan was able to keep the "integrity of the program" despite the falls, they thought he looked well-trained. Kurt said that Weir seemed to be "checking off elements" more than in past programs, and that he wasn't as interesting as he has been in the past. However, Kurt thought the strategy seemed to be working.
