Asada to compete at Japanese Figure Skating Championships after mother's death

Japan's two-time world champion figure skater Mao Asada is preparing to make what will be an emotional return to competitive skating following the death of her mother two weeks ago.

I am glad Mao is doing this, as this will most likely help her in the healing process. Also, I am sure her mother would have wanted her to do this. I think her mother would have even wanted her to have skated in the GP Final.

Isn't Japanese nationals this weekend, over Christmas? I'll have to remember to check the site. Oh, I hope she can hold it together and do well, so she feels at peace with her choice to compete.

I agree, and I think she even mentioned this (that she's skating at nationals to honor what her mother would have wanted). That said, I think that the reason why she withdrew from GPF was that there was still a chance that she could catch her mother before she passed, and, to me, it makes sense that this would trump any desire on her mother's part for her to continue competing.

Thirded. I am happy to hear she will compete and hope it is the right choice for her. I know I will be very happy to see her skate :)
