Ashley Wagner

^^ So do I. That first costume, with its dark grey melding into light grey into silver, reminded me of sparkling rain on a day when bits of sunshine come through. Was it suggestive of a silver medal, do you think? Could Gracie changing hers to a gold dress have caused Ashley to re-think? Well, anyway, I like the new dress too; it's a great color of deep cranberry. Maybe someone on her team thought it looked better with her hair, which is darker now than when she wore the silver dress.

I liked the gray and silver one also but I don't think that it flattered her very well. This dark one that she wore a Nationals is beautiful and the cut of it makes her look taller and more slender. It's more like the dress she borrowed it from Marissa last year which I thought was her best look yet as simple as it was.

Can't believe I am saying this, but I agree with Tara  ( did I just write that?) Ashley is a warrior. She did well at nationals and provided that nationals moment. Hoping she has two super clean skates at worlds. Another podium finish would be wonderful for an Oly year.

Love her new LP dress!! I wasn't crazy about the previous one.

Ashley did a live chat yesterday on Instagram as a promotion for John Wilson Blades. Jackie Wong transcribed some of her more interesting answers. I watched the chat live and submitted a couple of questions but there were so many flying by that Ashley could only answer a few. She did seem to ignore repeated questions about her thoughts on Gracie and whether she was friends with the Shibs... hmmm. Below are Jackie's tweets.

I also remember Ashley saying that Adam is one of the wittiest people she knows and he keeps her on her toes. She also said she might want to go back to school and get some kind of degree since she would like more than a high school diploma. (Perhaps if she goes into broadcast journalism, she might want to study that). She mentioned her boyfriend Eddy gave her the necklace she wears when skating, she likes it b/c it's simple. She also explained that she changed her FS costume b/c the top was too heavy and was falling off. She likes skating with her hair down b/c it makes her more vulnerable and relatable.

Here's Ashley's Worlds Teleconference with IN. I think everyone, not just members, can listen, but I'm not positive about that.

What I'm enchanted by is how Ashley takes the questions and creates something deeper, more interesting, and more soulful with her answers. She takes the questions to the next level.

And of course Ashley is as entertaining as usual..

I recommend listening, if you have 20 minutes. You can definitely multi-task while listening, although it's really nice focusing in and hearing how she considers how to say what she genuinely feels.

What happened to Ashley this season. Some cooments that she made last week made me suspicious that there is more going on than she has let on.

First comment " . . .now that I'm newly single . . ."

When talking about her lackluster performance she said something to the effect of: I just didn't do my job "anything more would sound like an excuse" implying that there was something that negatively affected her. Maybe I'm reading too much into it but she clearly regressed since last year.

I am such a fan and hope that she bounces back with a vengeance.

I honestly do think her breakup affected her. And I understand why she would think that was an excuse.

She personally told me that he broke her heart, and it was very recent. Early March. My heart broke for her.

Then, in her interview with Andrea after her fs at worlds, she mentioned that this month had been emotionally very hard for her. No doubt thinking about that.

I don't know if that was 100% it, but I was worried headed into this competition that it would affect her fs a lot, given the style of it. Breakups can affect you more than you think, especially when you've been together for as long as they were. Also if it was all him (given the fact that she told me he broke her heart) that could've been an issue too. I know she'll never admit it though, she is a total "no excuses" girl (and I love her for it)

Changing the theme a little, don't know if this has been mentioned, but Ashley already announced her music choices! As expected, La La Land for her fs and she will be bringing back Hip Hip Chin Chin for her short (which I am super excited for!!) 2018 here she comes!

I haven't been able to watch the interviews (real life, and slow internet at the farm) ... so I was relieved to read these posts. I'm heartbroken for Ashley, and with her; she and Eddie made an adorable couple, to be shallow. But it did feel like she was a little off, or didn't have her usual drive at Worlds; so it's a relief to know there were extenuating factors. This season is going to be an uphill climb for her to recover from, but I wish her all the best. It was the first time I'd heard her allude to Exogenesis as being about romance and love, so now I understand that too.

In case anyone hasn't read this quote, I'll repeat it here. I think it's so relevant to what we experienced with Ashley at Worlds.

I keep thinking about what she said in the article Nick McCarvel wrote last spring:

"Part of what my strength is as an athlete is that I'm a performer. I draw on real emotions. I'm not an emotional person: I was a military kid; it's ingrained in me. On the ice is the one place where I'm so much more vulnerable. If I'm going through something, on the ice is where I feel it and experience it the most."

Congrats to Ashley on her SB score in the SP at WTT, and breaking 70 for the first time this season. Good going Team USA captain!

Looking at the protocols, her 3-3 combo was UR, so her tech score went down by about 3 points. I hope she and Raf drill that combo until she can get it rotated consistently.

If she had fully rotated the toe, she would be sitting in 2nd place with a score around 73. The judges here gave her the 2nd highest PCS behind Med, so glad they rewarded her there.

Best of luck to her in the free!

Ashley has improved and reinvented herself more than once. I'll never count her out. If she had to have an off year, better this year than next. (I don't think I could take that tough love from Raf; he's so grumpy. But she knows best.)

I'm so:hap57: proud of Ashley! :luv17: She really vindicated herself with her performance today in the FS at WTT, scores or little dings notwithstanding. I'm very happy for her, because she needed a boost of confidence and to show (herself, and everyone) the rebounder that she truly is.

:agree:

Agree about Raf too ... especially observing how he reassures Nathan when he doesn't do his best and feels disappointed, as opposed to our girl. But you're right, Ashley knows what's best for her. The great thing is that Ashley and Adam have created each other as their best emotional support, and also Nadezda (I think I have her name right, but you know who I mean). Raf did reach out to her in K&C after the FS today, I was glad to see.

You mean Nadia Kaneva.

Raf has a double standard in his treatment with Ashley and Nathan in the KnC. Maybe it's because he sees Nathan as a kid and Ashley a grown woman, or maybe he treats Nathan with kid gloves and doesnt want him to run back to Marina. I think the Marina situation hurt his ego. He knows Ashley isn't going to bolt this late in her career but Nathan is the prize pony he wants in his stable.

Just my opinion, could be wrong.

My take on it is we've heard numerous times that Ashley knows when to push and when not. Nathan really doesn't seem to yet. I think Raf pushes Ashley because he can. She wants it, and she's not going to go off and do something that she can't physically handle. While she's a fierce competitor, she also knows her limits. Nathan isn't there yet. I think if Raf was that hard on him he might push too hard, even harder than he already does. If he has an unhealthy perfectionist streak he may be his own worst critic and need the encouragement, while Ashley just seems to say "bring it on!"

Agree that perhaps Raf treats Ashley and Nathan differently because they are different people who need different things.

These are excellent points. I do agree with you, when I look at it objectively. It would be nice if Raf could modify his behavior enough not to give Ashley the death glare or the cold shoulder in K&C. But he doesn't give a flip what spectators think of his behavior. To Ashley's credit, she understands that and accepts him and is unfailingly, vocally appreciative of what he's done and continues to do for her skating. I must say that I find noticeable the contrasting behavior to another (unless I'm mistaken) legendarily tough, scary coach: Mishin. He gives big hugs to his skaters no matter what.

I don't think it's on the table, but I'd like to see Ashley work with Phillip Mills again. She developed her artistry with him, and you couldn't say those programs were empty. Nathan needs a Marina, and Ashley needs a Phillip... I love Raf for skaters like Mao and Jeff Buttle, who could handle the second mark by themselves.

I like what Shae-Lynn has done for Ashley, especially with Moulin Rouge 2.0 and HHCC. I was less impressed with her choreo this past season, though, so maybe mixing choreographers might be a good thing.

I don't have a problem with Shae-Lynn as a choreographer, but they don't work together intensively throughout the season, which she did with Mills. I think that made the difference.

I agree, Raf loves her, there's no doubt about that. It could be that they have an agreement (spoken or otherwise) to act a certain way because that's what's needed. I know some adult skaters like being constantly praised like "That was great, but maybe you can do xxx next time!" and other skaters (like me) would rather be told "That wasn't so good, you forgot xxx." Ofc I'm not an internationally competitive figure skater but I think the idea is the same.
