Assess (honestly) the US men

I've read a lot about Rohene Ward, and I'm looking forward to seeing him. Nationals is definitely going to be interesting.

Joe, I like Rohene too, but he is hardly coming out of the juniors. He's been around for years and just hasn't managed to put together the performances at the right time. But he sure can sell a program. I wish him luck this year. I'd like to see him get his chance.

I know Johio. I should have prefaced that he is just a wannabee not from juniors. Actually he does look very young. btw, there are a lot of good skaters coming up from Juniors. I think Carriere will skate seniors this year.

Joe, Rohene has everything to BE a champion. He just hasn't done the right stuff at the right place at the right time. Good luck, Rohene, we're rooting for ya!

I think I saw him once or TV. If I don't remember wrong, it seems that he does not have the classic skating style. He is fast and powerful, but lacks flow and extention.

Here's the way i see it:

Weiss: I like his skating in general but he has always been mentally weak so his jumps don't work under pressure. I'd say he'd be lucky to get into the top 8 at the olympics

Goebel- All he had going for him was that he was consistent on his jumps. Now that his jumps aren't consistent, he isn't anything since his presentation marks are horrible. So, i don't see him getting even into the top 8 at the olympics.

Lysacek- I do like his skating quite a bit but in all honestly, i see his bronze medal as a fluke. He's the kind of skater that skates consistently but in order to win anything he has to hope his opponents make big mistakes. In other words, He doesn't control his own destiny. I see this guy potentially being in the top 7 at the olympics but not in medal contention.

Weir- I love his presentation marks and his jumps since they are always very pretty to look at when done. I see him as controlling his destiny a lot more than Lysaceck can because i see that he's more developped in every area than Lysacek is. To me this guy is the US best guy to comeback with a medal but only if he gets his head together and skates like we all know he can.

If Weir does skate cleanly then i only see two men who could outskate him at the olympics: Plushenko and Sandhu. The reason for that being is because Lambiel isn't a consistent player and doesn't have that beauty that's in Weir's skating. The only thing that i will say i love about Lambiel is his spinning which is the best in the world. His gold medal at the world championships truly was a fluke and don't see him winning again. Now Buttle is a big threat to Weir but if both skate to their best of their abilities i don't see him winning over Weir. For some reason i don't feel as though he has the command of the ice when he skates and seems to be a litle tentative.

Jess - What is the classic skating style? Please don't tell me it is balletic-like unless it is the only style of skating you like. I just think skaters should do their own thing. I think Reba MacIntyre is great country singer; Madonna is a great pop singer; Rene Flemming a great classical singer. I like them all. same with skating.

If Rohene wins (which I doubt) his style may just change this hold of ballet-like skating style.

My opinions:

Weiss: He has very good artistry, but his jumps have gotten worse. Doubtful.

Goebel: He is hurting in the jump dept., and his artistry is still not at the level of the big boys.

Lysacek: Ok with jumps, but needs more difficulty in his elements and choreo.

Weir: Best artistry among the U.S. mens. Just needs to deliver the goods. Quad would be nice. :) Until then, a longshot.

As for Savoie, Jahnke, etc. The international judges have not been impressed.

And that's it until Nats.

Rohene Ward: Considering the lack of real achievements his name seems to appear rather often. Well, of course I hope that he will succeed in US Nationals, but have doubts about seeing him competing in big competitions like Olympics or Worlds. It is enjoyable as a skater has great artistry, but to become a noteworthy skater, he needs the whole package.

Savoie, Jahnke, Bradley, etc.: I have never really been impressed by any of them, but of course it remains to be seen what happens at the Nationals.

Weiss: I feel sad, but I´m afraid that his competitive days are nearing their end. Miracles do happen now and then, maybe he will shine at the Nationals?

Goebel: Well, his jumping does not seem to work nowadays, and as he has very little artistic/presentation talent of any kind, maybe he will not make the Olympic team? On the other hand, there are three spots to fill, and it is the third spot that might be available for Tim.

Lysacek: I expect that he will succeed at the Nationals and makes the Olympic team as number 2. I really enjoy watching this skater, he has the beautiful jumps and great artistry, also.

Weir: This skater is my all-time favourite among all US male skaters so far. If he had managed to learn the quad a bit earlier.... , bad timing. Anyway, I see him as a very tough man and believe that he will show us something really grand at the Olympics.

Only one junior from last year's Nationals has qualified for 2006 Nationals in senior -- Tommy Steenberg (10th in Portland). Seven of the 12 junior men in Portland will be returning as juniors in St. Louis, and that includes Carriere.

IMO, Ward does have the "whole package" in terms of physical ability (jumps including quad toe, spins, "artistry"), but it is a fact that he has not competed well in his two previous senior nationals appearances in 2002 and 2004. My wish for him at Nationals is that he will be able to show the improvement I feel he has been making this season on the all-important mental side of competition.

Under the COP a quad is not as important for a win as it was under the 6.0 system. I think Weir can win if he skates great without a quad, but he may need a little help from others.

Evan has the ability to skate well under pressure. I think he will be on the US team with an outside chance at a medal.

I don't see Weiss on the podium, but he could be on the US Oly team, since Goebel is having such a tough season. Earlier in the season I would have picked Goebel with a potential Olympic medallist.

I don't feel any of the other US men are developed enough to even make the Oly team.

Sylvia - Isn't Jeremy Abbot hitting the senior circuit this Nats?

Joe

Jeremy Abbott finished 5th at Midwestern sectionals, and therefor did not qualify for Nationals. He is first alternate for Nationals (meaning that if any of the four men who qualified at Mids cannot go to Nationals, Jeremy will get to go).

Sectional results can be found here, if you want to look at the fields (top four skaters/teams move on to Nationals):

Pacific Coast results:

Eastern results:

Does this mean that there will be an additional 12 competitors at the Nats?

(BTW, you gave to Pacific Sectionals links. there was no Eastern.)

I've just posted the senior roster for 2006 US Nationals (Sectional qualifiers and all the skaters with byes to Nationals) in this thread:

Here's the link to the Eastern Sectional results:

(The detailed results protocols for all 3 U.S. Sectionals have also been posted.)
